Interview with Brian Simpson – The Heart Attack Thriver, how having a heart attack changed his life for the better
My Heart & Mind with Sallie Crawley
04/29/21 • 55 min
Brian suffered a massive heart attack at the age of 48. Prior to that he was exceptionally healthy and lived a very active life.
His heart attack occurred during an Ice Hockey match and he spent 20-25 minutes on his own in the dark unable to move.
Did he see the light? Despite there being a number of factors that seemed to make the situation difficult, he was lucky in so many ways including having paramedics having a Tim Hortons coffee (it’s famous in Canada). He’s lucky to be alive as they were so close.
He describes his experience in the Cath Lab, his opportunity to take part in a pilot and his magnificent cardiac recovery – his heart health before the heart attack gave him the edge in recovery.
After suffering a life-changing heart attack over 4 years ago, he set out to change how I was showing up in the world. He left a 25-year marriage, his job in a big pharmaceutical company and travelled extensively on his motorcycle through Canada, the USA and Central America searching for his purpose in life and ultimately happiness.
Brian shares with us his acceptance of abuse as a young child. How it created anger, guilt and shame. A secret and pain that he stuffed down into his broken heart.
Meditation was and still is a key element in helping Brian manage stress and heal his heart. Brian believes that stress is one of the main contributors to his heart attack and likely to be behind many other people’s heart health diagnosis.
Hear about his chance meeting with a Monk at an airport and the life-changing circumstances that followed. Then later his journey to India plays an important part in his life, and how he now focuses on helping other people through meditation and mindset coaching.
He explains how much he has changed as a person; his friends say he is unrecognisable from the man he was before. Not physically as he is as fit and healthy as he was before but emotionally, how he chooses to be in this life. He admits to being a recovering negative talker.
This is a fascinating interview, and suggest you stop and listen to what Brian has to say. He is ‘The Heart Attack Thriver’ and he has a checklist too.

You will understand what fatigue is and is not. You will understand what causes it and accept that you are justified in how you feel. You will have some ideas and tools to help you minimise the impact of the physical and emotional effects of fatigue.

Interview with Ray Bishop – Misdiagnosed more than once, having a forgiving heart and becoming the music man.
My Heart & Mind with Sallie Crawley
04/01/21 • 72 min
Ray was born with Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome. This did not affect his quality of life until after he had developed coronary heart disease. He was lucky that by this time, cardiac ablation could be carried out on him. This is one of the rare procedures which cures, rather than treats, a heart problem.
After years of Ray's CHD being misdiagnosed, a heart attack was correctly diagnosed and coronary artery by-pass surgery was performed.
At this time Ray had a confusion of feelings – relief at finally being taken seriously, anger at having been regarded as a hypochondriac, depression and confusion caused by PTSD, and fear of what the future held. His condition was helped by meeting other heart patients at support group meetings.
Being diagnosed with CHD taught Ray to make the most of his life. It also taught him that if he wanted to try something new, he should do it while he had the opportunity.
At the time of his heel surgery, he decided to learn to play a musical instrument for the first time in his life. This led to learning to sing and learning to play numerous other instruments. He now plays saxophone in two band, ukulele in two bands, sings in three choirs, and performs solo. His musical activities have played a huge part in his recovery. His heart problems ended his life as an engineer but started his new life as a musician.
When Ray was first told that he had coronary heart disease he was 48 and he thought his life was almost over. His first thoughts were that he would not see his young children grow up. He is now 70 and has two grandchildren.
When coronavirus curtailed his musical activities, Ray travelled to Lancashire and spent a very busy 14 weeks with his daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren. He then returned to London and started to busk for the first time, raising money for his heart support group.
At the age of 70, and 22 years after his CABG, Ray is now feeling fitter than at any time since his mid-thirties and thoroughly enjoying life.

A Journey of Survival and Resilience with Jon Johnston
My Heart & Mind with Sallie Crawley
12/07/24 • 31 min
My interview with Jon Johnston. He’s a survivor of a widow maker heart attack and a cardiac arrest that caused him to be without oxygen for 20 minutes, technically dead. He is also an author of two books and a sports website owner.
Today he talks to me about his life before his event and how he died but miraculously survived. He shares with me how he pieced together what had happened with the help of family and friends along with his realisation that he was not the only person affected. His heart attack impacted his family and friends in ways that he didn’t expect.
Due to oxygen deprivation Jon now lives with a traumatic brain injury and yet during his recovery, he has penned two books to help himself and others with their own recovery. We talk about how Jon lives his life happy and has ambitions for the future despite the change to his life, health, and knowledge that he will never be the person he once was.
We talk about Jon’s books and he shares some content with us. Some of his tried and tested activities have helped him and will help you too.

Fatigue management tips when you have a heart health diagnosis
My Heart & Mind with Sallie Crawley
04/28/22 • 15 min
This week I am talking more about "how-to" live life with fatigue and minimise the impact. I talk through more tools, rules and ideas to help you manage fatigue and conserve your energy.
Here are some of the topics I discuss in this episode.
- Sleep - whilst it doesn't get rid of fatigue is a good place to start. It means you only have to deal with the fatigue and not tiredness too.
- Nutrition - keep hydrated and an even blood sugar level if you can.
- Being safe when travelling - that means you and other people too.
- Self-awareness - get to know yourself and what helps, tame that voice that tells you stuff that doesn't serve you well.
- Lifestyle - move around, despite being counterintuitive it will help especially if you're outside with nature.
- Loving and respecting your body - fatigue management it's the only way!

Relaxamation - Forgiveness Is A Gift
My Heart & Mind with Sallie Crawley
04/22/22 • 28 min
For a full understanding of what my relaxamations are make sure you catch up with my episode called Relaxamations to relax and energise when living with heart disease, you can read or listen to me explaining it. In a nutshell, though, relaxamations are a blend of all of the best bits of meditation, guided relaxation, mindfulness and positive affirmations.
Imagine this: If you had $86,400 in an account and someone stole $10 from you, would you be upset and throw all of the remaining $86,390 away in hopes of getting back at the person who took your $10? Or move on and live? Right, move on and live. See, we have 86,400 seconds each day. Don’t let someone’s negative 10 seconds ruin the remaining 86,390. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Life is bigger than that. (unknown)
Do not listen to this episode while driving or operating machinery.
- Carrying resentment is holding on to negative energy.
- It is also a bit like taking poison and hoping the other person will die.
- Forgiving the other doesn’t mean they were right or you were wrong.
- It empowers you and disempowers them.
- You can also forgive yourself.
Here are your affirmations from today’s relaxamation:
- Forgiveness is a gift I give to myself.
- Forgiveness is a way of showing strength in myself.
- By forgiving others, I become free of the past.
Say your affirmations 5 times each as a set. Repeat your set of affirmations at least once a day.
The more you use them the bigger the impact. Add them to a habit that you do every day. While cleaning your teeth, driving, running, walking your dog, washing the dishes, when you first wake up or the last thing at night.
Your self-reflection questions are:
- Whom do I need to forgive?
- What would I gain by forgiving that person?
- Can I let go of my negative feelings about that person?
Use these reflection questions to delve a little deeper and get to know yourself better. You can use them as prompts for journaling, during meditation or just give yourself a few moments of time to consider.

Relaxamation - I Am Whole, Healthy & Complete
My Heart & Mind with Sallie Crawley
04/29/22 • 29 min
Quit hiding your magic! You are UNIQUE, you are the only one like you. You have one of a kind fingerprints, not even identical twins have matching ones. You are the outcome of one egg and around 40 million sperm, any other sperm and you would be a different you. You are the only one to see colours the way you do.
Remember not to compare yourself with others as there is no comparison. And anyway, you would be matching their outsides (what you see) with your insides (with what you think and feel).
The same goes for our health and our life in general. Even if we are feeling broken, we can live with health issues but still be healthy in mind and body. We can still live our lives happy. It really does help to remind yourself that you are good enough and that you are whole, healthy and complete.
Do not listen to this episode while driving or operating machinery.
Your affirmations:
- I am whole, healthy and complete
- I am enough just as I am
- My completeness is my very nature
Say your affirmations 5 times each as a set. Repeat your set of affirmations at least once a day.
The more you use them the bigger the impact. Add them to a habit that you do every day. While cleaning your teeth, driving, running, walking your dog, washing the dishes, when you first wake up or the last thing at night.
Your self-reflection questions are:
- What are my three greatest qualities?
- What is unique about me?
- In what ways do I hold myself back?
- Why, do I hold myself back?
Use these reflection questions to delve a little deeper and get to know yourself better. You can use them as prompts for journaling, during meditation or just give yourself a few moments of time to consider.
