They say music is a time machine, able to whisk you away to moments past with just a few notes—and that's exactly where I'm taking you in this episode of Music in my Shoes. Today's journey starts with a nod to my late father-in-law, Larry Roberts. Imagine my surprise at discovering Andy Summers of The Police was not the fresh-faced youngster I'd pictured strumming alongside Sting, but a seasoned musician who had already seen his share of the '60s rock scene.
As we stroll down memory lane, we tip our hats to the irreplaceable Los Angeles DJ, Jim Ladd, whose airwaves shaped a generation, and then swap coasts to the bustling streets of New York City. There, among the holiday lights and towering skyscrapers, I encounter the dizzying heights of the Edge and the changing face of the Hard Rock Cafe—a once sacred site for music lovers now repurposed as a beacon for tourists. This transition from personal music temples to mainstream meccas underscores the fluidity of music's place in our culture, and serves as a prelude to what turned out to be a deeply personal concert experience with Bobby Weir and the Wolf Brothers.
Finally, I pull back the curtain on the subjectivity of musical preferences—why one person's anthem can be another's static noise.
