Broadcasting from the serene Big Island of Hawaii, I invite you to join me on the Murders to Music podcast, where I reflect on this incident and contrast it with the relentless pace of my former life in law enforcement. Through this personal story, I explore the nuances of emotional de-escalation and the shame that often accompanies unchecked reactions.
Ever had someone question your work ethic or intensity, leaving you wrestling with self-doubt? In an unexpected lunchtime conversation, an older man’s unsolicited advice unearthed past criticisms from my years in law enforcement, thrusting me into a whirlpool of self-reflection. This episode offers a candid exploration of these internal conflicts, seeking to understand the fine line between vulnerability and resilience.

Whether it's an interaction that feels insignificant or a memory that lingers, these moments challenge us to understand our emotional responses and reshape our perceptions of strength. Ever wondered just how impactful trauma can be on the brain, regardless of its source? Join us on Murders to Music as we unravel the universal nature of trauma through our deeply personal journey. We start with a harrowing chapter from 2005, where my wife and I faced an unimaginable crisis during her pregnancy. Discover how a life-threatening complication escalated into a dramatic helicopter transfer to Anchorage, Alaska, and the emotional rollercoaster that followed when our unborn son's survival hung in the balance.
Our story continues with the miraculous journey of our son, Justus, who was born with Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia (CDH). From makeshift medical transport solutions in Alaska to specialized care at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, witness the extraordinary challenges we faced. We delve into the ongoing struggles with Justus' developmental delays and health issues, and you'll have the chance to meet Justus himself as he prepares to share his unique perspective. Through his words, we'll explore how growing up with CDH shaped his life, from hospitalizations to the impact of his condition on his physical and mental health.
In this emotional episode, we also focus on the profound mental health challenges stemming from prolonged hospital stays, particularly during the isolating months of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hear firsthand about Justus' battles with chronic blockages and underdeveloped lungs, and the pivotal role key medical professionals played in his journey. We'll also touch on how these experiences have influenced his career aspirations, shifting from nursing to EMS and firefighting. Confronting the shadow of mental health stigma in law enforcement isn't easy, but it's a journey that must be taken. As a police officer, grappling with the decision to take antidepressants was fraught with fear, judgment, and concerns about career repercussions. Join me as I share my personal story of overcoming these hurdles, offering reassurance to others navigating similar challenges. We touch upon the realization that many of our seemingly composed colleagues are facing their own battles, highlighting the importance of addressing mental health issues openly and without shame.
During a frigid Alaskan night, an unexpected encounter with a local drug dealer unfolds with humor and irony. Despite probable cause, the denial of a search warrant leaves the situation unresolved, underscoring the legal complexities and unpredictability of police work. This anecdote serves as a light-hearted reminder of the many intricacies officers deal with beyond the badge, painting a picture of the unique challenges faced in the field.
Mental health struggles in high-pressure professions like law enforcement are not just personal battles; they're collective experiences. From severe depression to PTSD, these issues can have profound impacts on both personal and professional lives. Through candid accounts and insights from experts like Dr. Bill Lewinsky, we explore the journey towards healing and the significance of embracing vulnerability. By fostering a supportive community, we aim to confront stigma and encourage living a healthier, happier life. Whether you're in law enforcement or any other field, let's promote a culture where seeking help is seen as a sign of strength, not weakness.

Some memories never leave you, no matter how many years pass. The image of a human leg sticking up from the ground with a white tennis shoe loosely tied at the end remains vivid in my mind decades after that search and rescue operation in rural Alaska.
As a teenage Explorer with the Alaska State Troopers, I never questioned why we were being brought to death scenes and body recovery operations. When a resident reported their dog bringing home a human skull, it seemed perfectly normal that I'd be among the search party combing the hillsides to find the source. The discovery of Jennifer White's remains in that shallow grave marked me in ways I couldn't comprehend at the time - one of several encounters with death that occurred before I'd even finished high school.
Looking back now with the perspective of a full law enforcement career behind me, I question the wisdom of exposing young minds to such traumatic scenes. These experiences unquestionably shaped my career and nervous system responses. While I eagerly participated at the time, thinking it was "cool," I now recognize the potential psychological harm of normalizing death and trauma during formative years. This isn't about being soft - it's about protecting developing brains from experiences they're not equipped to process.
The Explorer programs continue today, with well-intentioned officers bringing teenagers into "the bowels of hell" under the guise of career preparation. But at what cost? Have you experienced something similar, either as a young Explorer or in another context? I'm curious to hear your thoughts on whether exposing teenagers to death scenes does more harm than good in preparing them for careers in law enforcement.

What happens when faith meets the front lines of society's toughest roles? On today's Murders to Music podcast, we are joined by James Doyle, a police officer and combat veteran, along with Tim Smith, a former worship leader and pastor. Together, they unravel their personal journeys of maintaining faith amidst the relentless pressures of their professions. James shares how his experiences in law enforcement and combat led him to lead a Christian organization for first responders, while Tim opens up about the spiritual challenges he faced within the bustling environment of a megachurch. Their enlightening stories offer a glimpse into how faith can provide a guiding light in some of the most demanding and stressful careers.
Our discussion doesn't shy away from the hard questions. We tackle the complexities of forgiveness, trust, and judgment, particularly how these concepts are tested and forged in high-stakes environments. Drawing from the lives of biblical figures like Jesus, Paul, and Barnabas, we reflect on the difficulty of maintaining trust after betrayal and the challenge of balancing one's survival instincts with Christian teachings. Listener questions bring to light the struggle many law enforcement officers and veterans face in reconciling their faith with their experiences, revealing the profound need for discernment and understanding of evil as a human action rather than divine will.
Faith and community emerge as vital sources of strength and solace in times of trauma and transition. Through moving stories of personal loss and redemption, we emphasize the importance of therapeutic conversations and maintaining a personal relationship with God. James and Tim highlight how Christian community can offer comfort and purpose, even in the face of tragedy and doubt. As they explore the journey of personal growth and the search for peace through faith, they remind us of the power of solidarity, integrity, and perseverance in navigating the challenges of life and service. Join us as we explore how staying connected to one's faith can offer hope and guidance in a world filled with trials.

What happens when faith meets the front lines of law enforcement? Join me, Aaron, as I uncover the complex tapestry of faith, identity, and career demands with our guests, James Doyle, a former Army Infantryman turned law enforcement officer, and Tim, a seasoned pastor and worship leader from one of the world's most famous churches. Together, we unravel James's transformative journey from a nominal Christian upbringing to rediscovering his faith in college, eventually leading a Christian network for first responders. Tim lends his insights on the shared struggle of identity loss and the necessity of community support for believers in high-pressure professions.
Our conversation weaves through the intense realities faced by Christians in law enforcement, from grappling with trauma to balancing leadership with vulnerability. We discuss the harsh challenges of maintaining one's faith amidst the demands of the field, while James opens up about feeling disenfranchised and seeking solace through Christ and his community. Drawing from personal stories and literature like "Strong and Weak," we explore how leaders can successfully juggle authority and vulnerability in environments that often prioritize ambition over human connection.
As we navigate the intricate dance between love, justice, and faith, we delve into the active role love plays in pursuing justice and the nuanced process of forgiveness. Our reflections include insights from Tim Keller and Henry Cloud on distinguishing between forgiveness, reconciliation, and restoration. This episode promises a rich tapestry of reflections and narratives that will resonate with listeners from all walks of life, challenging them to consider how faith influences their daily decisions and interactions.

Ever wondered why mental health injuries like PTSD face more skepticism than physical wounds? Join me, Aaron, as I peel back the layers of my personal battle with the workers' compensation system and the emotional labyrinth of the Independent Medical Examination (IME) process. Picture recounting your darkest memories not once, but repeatedly, to a system that questions your pain. It's a journey riddled with frustration and the stark realization that promises of solidarity from city and union often ring hollow.
Throughout this episode, I share the raw and unfiltered reality of healing from trauma. Imagine navigating a two-and-a-half year storm of medication and therapy, only to find your past traumas resurfacing at every turn. Listen in as I chat with a friend who shares my struggle with PTSD, discussing the power of vocalizing our experiences and the challenge of separating memory from its emotional heft. Even as progress is made, the struggle to accurately convey the depth of mental health challenges in official records remains a daunting battle.
In a candid exploration of identity and career upheaval, I reflect on my life as a former police officer and musician. The loss of these aspects of my identity, akin to losing a part of oneself, is compounded by a system that should be supportive but often isn't. By sharing my story, I hope to offer a beacon of perseverance and understanding to those caught in similar maelstroms, encouraging you not to let the bureaucracy or your personal battles define you. Let’s shine a light on these challenges and strive for the empathy and support we all deserve.

What if we could stop first responder PTSD before it starts? Susan Farren's life-changing revelation came at her darkest moment – facing a terminal cancer diagnosis after 30 years as a paramedic, when a surgeon casually mentioned they "see a lot of this in first responders." That pivotal comment launched her investigation into how trauma physically changes emergency responders, ultimately leading her to sell her home and create First Responder Resiliency, an organization that's now trained over 12,000 people nationwide.
The traditional first responder wellness program – what Susan calls "Suck It Up Buttercup" – clearly wasn't working. Despite existing support like CISM debriefings and employee assistance programs, rates of suicide, addiction, divorce, and depression continued rising among those who serve our communities. Susan realized something fundamental was missing: a proactive approach that addresses how trauma physically alters the brain and body before problems emerge.
Susan shares her personal journey through addiction, divorce, cancer, and suicidal thoughts with remarkable vulnerability, describing a moment when she found herself "howling like a wounded animal" in her trailer with a handgun, saved only by a random call from her manicurist. This dark night of the soul mirrors what countless first responders experience – trapped in isolation, ashamed to admit they're struggling, caught in what Susan describes as a tornado pulling all life's debris into its vortex.
The First Responder Resiliency program combines cutting-edge neuroscience with practical healing modalities like meditation, tactical yoga (taught by a 260-pound former military operator), and recently, healing drum circles led by Def Leppard's Rick Allen. These approaches reset the nervous system, helping participants escape the biochemical addiction to stress hormones that many first responders develop unknowingly. As Susan eloquently puts it: "I would love to get people meditating before we get them medicating."
Whether you're a first responder yourself or love someone who is, this conversation offers profound insights into how trauma changes us physically and mentally – and how we can heal before reaching crisis. Susan's revolutionary approach shows that true strength comes not from suppressing emotions but from understanding our nervous systems and learning tools to maintain balance throughout a challenging career.
