Do you feel like you are losing yourself the more you become social?
In this episode I am here to give you a good ol conspiracy theory about social media. Yep it's the part we just don't talk about often enough when it comes to social media. I mead the "dark side" of social media.
So what does the "dark side" of social media actually mean? It's the realisation that our social media accounts are running us, rather than us running them. Yes a realisation that an algorithm is most likely running your life. You see this algorithm has a job. That job is to show you what you like, but to also get you in a highly emotional state so that you are primed and ready to.... buy. Yep your good sense of self and self worth is being baited and manipulated so that you can make a purchase... now! And if you don't now, it's OK your data will be collected and you will be retargeted later so no biggie.
Yes it's something we don't want to face. We are so busy with pre-sets and finding the perfect picture or quote that we don't want to face what our attention to these platforms really mean.
I have been so lucky to discover people like Jaron Lanier who can expose this side of social media from inside of the tech world. But if you don't know anything about that or are not familiar with anything I am talking about right here then buckle your seat belt because we are about to go on a journey!

Are you not happy?
Have you ever achieved a goal and it hasn't made you happy?
Do you wonder what really drives happiness?
Maybe happiness has less to do with being recognised, and more about what you give. More so in your relationships and community.
Is happiness your real goal or is it fullfilment?
Here I explain a quick concept that may be the reason why you're not feeling the happiness you feel you should be feeling.
More importantly it explains why it is important to enjoy the journey along the way and why we can enjoy all of it. Even the crap bits.
Truly, even if it's not great you are still allowed to enjoy those bits. You are allowed to be happy through those bits. If you train yourself to be happy during those bits then you will make happiness a habit and bring meaning to all of the moments.

Have you ever had a conversation with someone that went nowhere?
Have you ever tried communicating with someone and you don't feel heard?
It might be because you are trying to be a really good active listener.
I bet you didn't know active listening sucked?
So what should we try instead if we have been taught that the best way to listen is through "active listening"?
Why not try Passive Listening?
Passive listening is this crazy idea that maybe you don't need to add to the conversation other than just be there to listen and provide support to the person who is trying to communicate with you.
You don't need to have all the answers. You don't always have to respond with the perfect answer. Sometimes the way to improve or build on a relationship is to just be there and listen with no intentions or opinions other than to just be open and listen.
This can also help improve your communication with staff and at work, by allowing people to feel validated and heard. This simple idea can do wonders for your overall communication skills.
