Fighting poverty and transforming lives in Kenya with Adam Gould, co-founder and Executive Director of eduKenya, Ep. 105
Multiracial Family Man
02/19/17 • 67 min
Ep. 105: Adam Gould is the Co-Founder and Executive Director of eduKenya (http://www.edukenya.org/), which seeks to empower children and their families with the opportunity to break the chronic cycle of poverty and transform their lives and communities.
Adam co-founded eduKenya with Bob Kikuyu in 2010 as an extension of the Kenya Children Project, an outreach to children and families in Mathare.
The Kenya Children Project was established in 2006 as a partnership with Believers Centre Mathare Church and Life in Abundance to expand on the church’s childcare program by developing a fully functional primary school. The Kwa Watoto School – which means “for the children” in Swahili – was the result.
From 2007 – 2010, the Kwa Watoto School rapidly expanded, adding a new grade level each year. The Skills Training and Home Based Care programs were initiated to benefit students’ parents and other community members by teaching income generating skills and providing support for people living with HIV/AIDS and other life threatening conditions.
eduKenya was founded to build upon the success of the Kenya Children Project by replicating the model in other areas of the slum for the benefit of countless other uneducated children and families living in abject poverty.
Listen as Adam tells Alex about his first journey to Kenya, how get got involved in the culture and society, and the journey to forming eduKenya, and how he remains tied to Kenya via his work but also through his own, multicultural, multiracial family, which includes his Kenyan wife, and their children.

Exploring dualities of life with filmmaker and Multiracial family dad, Rain Bennett, Ep. 165
Multiracial Family Man
04/22/18 • 48 min
Ep. 165: Rain Bennett lives in a world of dualities. From a small town, he loves world travel and cosmopolitan life. He's an artist, but he also loves the rigor of athletic pursuit. And, a White man, he is a Multiracial family man. His life is a study in the co-existence of dual nature and contrasts.
Rain is a two-time Emmy© nominated filmmaker, fitness professional, public speaker, and writer. His projects excel at bringing the stories of different subcultures to light.
Born into a blue-collar family in “Little” Washington, North Carolina, Bennett spent his early years playing sports, telling stories, and swimming in any body of water he could enter with a splash. Now an accomplished traveler in his mid-thirties, he still finds the most pleasure in those three simple activities. He is a humanist that enjoys inspiring people, teaching, and rooting for the underdog.
Bennett created Flying Flounder Productions in 2008 and specialized in telling real stories that touch the heart. He directed and produced his first feature documentary by traveling the world with just a backpack and a Canon DSLR camera. That film, Raise Up: The World is Our Gym won “Best of the Fest” at the Hip Hop Film Festival and Bennett secured a deal with Red Bull Media House for worldwide release.
He has produced quality work for more than a decade, providing both corporate and nonprofit clients with production or consultation services and giving presentations on short form storytelling. He is featured in publications such as Men’s Health, Breaking Muscle, and Sports Business Global, appeared on national television in multiple countries, and been featured on several fitness-based podcasts.
Rain Bennett currently resides in Durham, North Carolina. When he’s not working out or adjusting to life as a new dad, he writes and directs both narrative and documentary film projects. His mission is simple: to help people realize that they too can be great, no matter where they come from.
And, importantly, for the podcast, he is the author of recent article about his Multiracial family: I Told My Trump-Supporting Mom I’m Having A Biracial Baby. Here’s What Happened.

On being multiracial, adopted by White biological relatives, and reunited with her Black, biological father, with Melissa Swain O'Neill, Ep. 47
Multiracial Family Man
01/10/16 • 74 min
Ep. 47: Melissa Swain O'Neill has a wonderful life. She is married to a fantastic guy, has great kids, and has a job that she loves as a personal trainer to special populations.
She also has a phenomenally interesting life story. A biracial (Black-White) woman, Melissa was born to a young, unmarried White woman in Oregon. Her biological father, a young, African-American college student was not aware of the circumstances of Melissa's birth.
Melissa was then adopted by her White, maternal, great aunt and uncle and raised on the other side of the country, in Cape May, New Jersey.
Later in life, as she neared the end of her college career, Melissa decided to seek out her biological father, who remained unaware that she was even alive until receiving her letter. They connected and developed a fantastic relationship that enabled Melissa (who remained in contact with her biological mother) to develop a relationship with the African-American side of her family.
Now, as mentioned above, Melissa is married (to a White man), they have two wonderful kids (who are multiracial like Melissa), and she is living happily as a multiracial family mom who loves her work as a fitness trainer for special populations.
Hers is truly an American story.
