Muay Thai Guy Podcast - Episode 74

After having his blog post on kru's and ajarn's go viral in the Muay Thai world, it seemed necessary to have Brian Sargent on to talk about the controversial post. Besides that we discuss training in Thailand, battling food addiction and much more:
  • What his initial start in martial arts was and how eventually found a Muay Thai gym.
  • How his first 7-month trip to Thailand was a life changing event.
  • What it was like training at a wide variety of gyms, including the gym from "Chok Dee", Lukbarnyai.
  • Why and how the training differed so much from gyms in Thailand to the gyms back in the US.
  • How to win over the Thai people with humor and goofiness.
  • His thoughts and opinions on the whole "Kru" and "Ajarn" fad where people are labeling themselves high-level teachers after a short training course.
  • What initially drove him to write a piece on this topic and how it grew in popularity shortly after he posted it.
  • Why he originally started his Muay Thai blog and where he sees it going in the future.
  • His battles with weight loss and how he lost 100lbs.
  • Why food addiction and depression can be major factors in someones weight gain and how it should be taken into consideration before judging people.
  • What his plans and goals are for his website, training career and future trips to Thailand.
  • And much more!

Muay Thai Guy Podcast - Episode 99

One of the most passionate, outspoken people I've come across online has got to be Marcus Oakley. Going by the pen name Charlie Hustle, he has written a number of posts for Muay Thai Guy and has started a number of conversations about the sport that are crucial to it's growth and exposure. From his "Top 10 Most Influential Fighters" to the "Curious Case of the Phantom Casual Fan Offensive in Muay Thai", Marcus always has a unique perspective to share and that's why I had to get him on the podcast! We talk a variety of topics including:
  • How he got his start in Muay Thai after watching Blood Sport and seeing Tong Po.
  • How he initially wanted to train for himself but gradually fell in love with coaching.
  • Why he decided to open up his own space and the challenges he's faced doing so.
  • The differences between fancy, high-tech gyms to the old school, bare bone gyms.
  • His thoughts on the fight scene in the midwest and how it's hard to find quality gyms to train at.
  • Why women competing in combat sports is such a big thing for him (hint, he has 3 sisters)
  • What's it like teaching and coaching his significant other.
  • His thoughts on the gyms who don't allow their students to train at other gyms.
  • What is means to be a "true" martial artist.
  • And much, much more!

12/22/14 • -1 min

Let me just start off by saying that I've been a huge fan of Duane Ludwig since I got started in Muay Thai and kickboxing. He's fought some of the best in the world including John Wayne Parr, Masato, Ramon Dekkers, Albert Kraus, Malaipet and others. Not only that, but he also coached Team Alpha Male to their first UFC title by helping TJ Dillashaw defeat Renan Barao... needless to say, Duane knows his shit. Also, I just wanted to give a shoutout to Rachel who first planted the idea in my head to reach out and interview Duane. Thank you for that idea and for the review of the podcast, you're fucking awesome! Anyway, in the podcast, Duane discusses a variety of topics including:
  • How his new academy Ludwig Martial Arts is doing in Denver, Colorado.
  • Who is toughest opponent was (besides himself) during his kickboxing and K-1 days.
  • Why he decided to make the switch from kickboxing to MMA.
  • What type of adjustments he had to make going from K-1 to the UFC.
  • What his general philosophy on striking is and what he believes are the most important aspects of being a good striker.
  • The benefits of fighting from both stances and why everyone should learn to do it.
  • What is was like coaching Team Alpha Male and the challenges he faced training all these beasts at once.
  • His thoughts on smoking weed and how it's helped him after his career.
  • How smoking isn't for everyone but if used in moderation could be beneficial to some people.
  • What tips he would give to up and coming fighters trying to make it in the fight world
  • And much, much more!
