In this episode, Chris McDonough visits cousins Nigel Baird and Peter Baird in a paddock badly drifting in the 2018 and 2019 drought.

They're talking about the GRDC investment 'Practical tactics to improve ground cover and ensure soil preservation following successive low rainfall seasons.'

The Baird's is a remarkable story of recovery. Following an extended period of drought, which in itself is bad enough, thousands of kangaroos descended from station country to take away any remaining ground cover, and this caused devastating wind erosion.

Since then Nigel and Peter have been working really hard to get the paddock back to where it was before the drought. Their success now just goes to show what can be done with a bit of hard work and determination.

Navigating Climate Uncertainty in Agriculture for 2024

In this second episode of the 'Better Frost Decisions Podcast' for 2024, hosted by Paige Cross of Mallee Sustainable Farming, the focus is on demystifying climate drivers and their implications for agricultural planning and decision-making.

Joined by Peter Hayman, Principal Scientist at the South Australian Research and Development Institute, the discussion centres on the challenges of forecasting climate conditions, particularly in autumn, and the current neutral El Nino Southern Oscillation Index and what it implies for the upcoming season in southern Australia. They explore the importance of being cautious with autumn forecasts, acknowledging farmers' need for rain and the strategy of dry seeding amidst uncertain weather conditions.

The conversation also touches on climate drivers like the Indian Ocean Dipole and the nuances of making agricultural decisions based on probabilistic forecasts. The episode emphasizes the value of farmer experience and peer learning in decision-making processes, particularly in relation to frost management and preparing for weather-related risks.

It concludes with acknowledgments for the support from GRDC and a reminder of the ongoing project aimed at mitigating the impact of frost through informed decision-making.

MSF Farm Talk Podcast - Thirty years of saltbush at the McNabb's
play

04/11/23 • 9 min

Ian and Elizabeth McNabb have over thirty years’ experience with different types of forage
shrub, established by both direct seeding and planting tube-stock.

They’ve worked out which species survive best and regenerate, and currently have around 800 acres of mostly Old Man Saltbush on heavier, salt-affected land. This stand has helped reduce the spread of saline land on their property. It also provides valuable extra feed, allowing the McNabb’s to lamb their SAMM ewes down three times every two years. Grazing with cattle as well as sheep has prevented shrubs from getting too tall. Importantly, the extensive area of Saltbush meant the McNabbs could keep their stock through most of the drought of 2017-2020, improving the drought resilience of their business.

This project is supported by the Mallee Catchment Management Authority through funding from the Australian Government's Future Drought Fund.

MSF Farm Talk Podcast - From theory to field - long coleoptiles in the Mallee
play

06/05/24 • 5 min

In this episode of the MSF Farm Talk podcast, we revisit discussions from the MSF Big Ag Day Out events held earlier this year. The focus is on the advancements in long coleoptile wheat and its impact on farming systems.

Long coleoptiles are an emerging technology aimed to improve the ability to establish crops on time under drying autumn soil surface conditions, like the 2024 season. Mallee sands are well suited where summer fallow rainfall is enough to create a deeper sowing opportunity.

Therese McBeath, CSIRO, and Nick Paltridge, MSF, discuss various projects and experiments that highlight the benefits of deep sowing, especially in the Mallee region.

With insights into the integration of long coleoptile varieties in erodible soils and scenarios involving moisture below the surface, the conversation also explores the potential for other crop types.

Tune in to learn about the current trials and future prospects in Mallee farming systems.
