It’s Loki time! The Loki series is just around the corner and we’re excited...ish.

While we liked a lot of what we saw in WandaVision, and Falcon and the Winter Soldier, we had some common issues with both those shows that we hope Loki can avoid.

Let’s find out together!

Movie Money Refinanced: Episode 51 (20-05-2020) AMC Vs. Universal: Dawn of Troll-stice

The movie making industry may be facing huge changes in the months to come. As Covid-19 continues to discourage large gatherings, cinemas have suffered immense losses, as studios experience unprecedented success on PVOD platforms. This has lead them to consider same-day release when theatres re-open.

AMC has since declared that they will not show Universal Pictures films, a declaration that was supported by Regal Cinema.

Shawna and I are joined by independent filmmaker Kaiel Eytle to discuss the ins and outs of the complex issue.

August has been a very telling month for the weekend box office. It’s had a few surprises despite being very much the same every week. Now as September approaches, perhaps there’s gonna be a bit more of a shake up week to week in the top 5. As it stands we’ve had some movies clean house the last few weeks simply because, well, if no one else is gonna do it...

Case in point, the number 1 movie this week was once again, ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ making $22.1M in its 3rd weekend, but 4 day weekend totals actually bring it up to $28.3M. The film has brought in $110.8M domestically, and a worldwide gross of $136.9M, all on a $30M budget. It’s consistently had weekends between $20-$30M, giving it one of the most consistent releases of the year. It’s not the only mainstay this week either. Number 2 this week goes to we have ‘The Meg’ with $10.5M over the 3 day weekend, and $13.4M at the 4 day total. Domestically the film has grossed at $123.4M, just shy of its $130M budget, but the true majesty is with its $465.7M worldwide gross, which will surely bring ‘The Meg’ to being a $500M movie, or just shy of it.

Receiving a nice bump from last week, it’s ‘Mission Impossible Fallout’. Once again Ethan Hunt holds on for dear life in the top 5, this weekend bringing in $7M on the 3 day weekend, and $4M on the 4 day weekend. The domestic gross sits at $206.3M, and its worldwide gross is $650M. It’s travelling behind the last two installments in the franchise but not by much. At least, domestically. $3M more and it’ll beat out ‘Ghost Protocol in the domestic tally, but worldwide its still trailing behind ‘Rogue Nation’ by about $30M. Who knows, maybe the IMF can pull off another miracle.

Now here’s the tricky part. See, with the 3 day weekend, ‘Searching’ is at number 4 with $6,070,000, and ‘Operation Finale’ is at number 5 with $6,019,000. But, with the 4 day weekend, ‘Operation Finale’ is at number 4 with $7.8M, and ‘Searching’ is at number 5 with $7.65. All this to say, if the world ended at midnight on Sunday, Searching would be at number 4. Unfortunately for them, the world continued on, and ‘Operation Finale’ snatched the spot.

If you want to hear more on the top 5, the recent ‘Predator’ trailer, and my review for the God awful ‘The Happytime Murders’, you can listen to the podcast episode up top.

2018 has been quite a year for movies, and quite a year for the box office. It seems every month has had massive releases that have somehow been able to share the wealth that comes from serving ravenous film audiences. Certainly films like ‘Solo’ suffer, but by and large, this year is a massive difference to 2017, which was a summer full of underperformance. Never forget, 2017 was so bad, it made Paramount decide to cancel the next ‘Transformers’ film.

Ding dong, the witch is dead.

This weekend the #1 movie was of course ‘Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom’. Not quite as big of an opening as its immediate predecessor, but considering that film’s biggest competition was the second weekend of Paul Feig’s ‘Spy’, it’s not exactly a fair comparison. The dino sequel made $148m at its opening but the real story is in the film’s foreign box office numbers, which have amassed a terrifying $567m. Fallen Kingdom had to battle it out with ‘Incredibles 2’, the #2 movie this week, which continues to be a force to be reckoned with at the box office, bringing in $80.3m this weekend. That puts its domestic total to $349.7m, and its worldwide total to $484.4m.

Intrestingly, these film’s are enjoying shares of the global box office audience inversely. Jurassic World 2 has made gargantuan amounts of money in the foreign box office, at a rate that makes its $148m opening seem downright modest. Meanwhile, Incredibles 2 is faring only so so overseas, but is doing gangbusters at home. Mid week reports range between $20m and $30m all week for Incredibles 2.

A smiling face apparently beloved around the world

Two huge films, serving two equally huge audiences. For a match up that could’ve easily been predicted as being the downfall for one of these films, it’s fascination to see that they really were too big to fail.

The rest of the box office is exactly that. The rest. Well that’s not true. There are some numbers of note in the lower rungs of the top 5. Number 3 is ‘Oceans 8’ which made over $100m domestically this week, and has brought in a worldwide total of $171.5m. It’s not as successful as the previous 3 films in the series, but it’s certainly garnered a respectable profit. Number 4 is ‘Tag’, scraping by once again in the top 5 for probably the last time. The star studded comedy brought in $8.2m this weekend, bringing its worldwide total to $33.6m. Finally at number 5, ‘Deadpool 2’ just will not die, and is at #5 for the second weekend in a row. The film brought in $5.2m this weekend, and its worldwide total is $707.2m. A third film is all but certainly on the way.
