Kelly McCarren, Sharon & Emma - Beauty Runs in the Family
Mothers and Daughters Podcast
06/20/22 • 70 min
Growing up Kelly McCarren and her sister Emma Hughes, had a great relationship, despite Kelly keeping to herself - for You Beauty fans, and followers of Kelly on Instagram, that may surprise you. But her mum Sharon agreed, she didn't know until later on that she was bullied at school. Kelly and Emma have the most special bond, as sisters, who are doing motherhood together, they really lean on each other to get through the day-to-day, with laughter and tears. In fact, throughout the podcast, Emma is holding baby Lenny (Kelly's bubba) throughout the chat, patting had shushing him for his sleep. And for everyone asking, Lenny does make an appearance at the end.
Kelly, the host of You Beauty (Mamamia), is extremely honest and open about her beauty routine and motherhood. she doesn't sugarcoat it, and for new mums, she is a real hero. She didn't shy away when deciding not to take maternity leave, one that she slightly regrets, but regardless, soldiers on through sleepless nights, crying days, laughs and nappy changes.
Sharon, Kelly and Emma's mum, was a shining example for her girls when it came to working and raising a family, having been an accountant and TAFE teacher until recently. Now she enjoys life up the coast and loves being a grandmother.

Rachael Casella & Wendy Banham: A Mother's Mission Part 1
Mothers and Daughters Podcast
05/01/22 • 51 min
This week, we kick off our episode with some very special Mother's Day messages from some of our previous guests, Bahar Etminan, Ariel Parker (Babes Project), Nikolina Kharoufeh (9honey). Wishing all the mother's a very happy mother's day!
Our chat this week is with Rachael Casella and her mum Wendy. Rachael is an advocate for IVF, Genetic Screening, Child Loss and Fertility, all while working as an AFP officer, raising her son Zac and continuing to grow Mackenzie's Mission! Not long after Mackenzie was born, she was diagnosed with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) – a severe inherited neuromuscular condition without a cure. After the initial shock and disbelief, Rachael, her husband and their families decided to give Mackenzie the best life she could have, giving her all the love and experiences life had to offer. She sadly passed away at 7 months old. Believing no couple should face this tragedy, the Casellas launched a campaign calling for reproductive genetic carrier screening to be routine and free for all prospective parents in Australia.
After losing her daughter, Rachael and her family have managed to move mountains, recently the Australian Government announced $500 million towards genomics research. Rachael shares her continued battle with IVF and giving a sibling to Zac and Mackenzie, she truly is a gift to this world.
We thank Rachael and her mum Wendy for sharing their story and continuing to bring awareness so that no parent has to go through what they have been through.
Part 2 with Rachael and Wendy will be released May 9th!

Nikolina & Danica - The power of family and motherhood
Mothers and Daughters Podcast
03/27/22 • 81 min
Nikolina is a writer, producer and presenter with a passion for open and honest conversation and storytelling. She started her career at Nova 969, her parents couldn't believe it when she landed the role. As immigrants from Macedonian, they came to Australia, to give their girls, the best life they possibly could, they didn't speak the language, they left behind their family and friends, and 30 years later, they have succeeded all expectations. Danica beams with pride when talking about her children, and grandchildren. Nikolina spends her days reporting on the chaos of motherhood and answering all the 'wtf' questions she is left with each day after taking care of her toddler. The host of 'How To Life' the Podcast Nikolina isn't shy from opening up to listeners about her chaotic life as a wife, soon-to-be mum of two and confusing career. She has also written an e-guide for mums, Mum Advice, for those who are looking to cut through the noise and get a real answer, from a real mum. Danica is currently still working as a Diversional Therapist, after almost 30 years of her long-standing career, and isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. She has a passion for looking after the well-being of aged care residents.
We loved chatting to them both, they were honest about motherhood, careers and how to "balance" the two. Which let's be real is more of a juggling act than a balancing act. Also a big thank you to Nikki, for sharing her struggles in the early days/months of motherhood, with her son Noah. It can be hard to share with everything, including family, how the baby blues are affecting us, and she continues to share that with her articles and parenting advice on 9Honey, and her very funny and all too real, reels on Instagram.

Briony Benjamin & Denise: Life is Tough But So Are Mothers & Daughters
Mothers and Daughters Podcast
09/27/21 • 67 min
When you look at Briony Benjamin, she exudes joy, happiness and is the picture of health - bright lip, a smile on her face, a tan! But all of that was masking how she truly felt inside, and what went unnoticed for the better part of a year. After terrible night sweats and fatigue, her mother insisted she sees a specialist. Her mother intuition told her to fly down to Sydney for the appointment, thankfully she was there to hold Briony's hand when she received her diagnosis, Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
Briony had been working at MamaMia as a video producer, a dream job, a million girls or boys would want. But she had to stop all of that after her diagnosis, to start an IVF plan, chemo to focus on herself and her health. Briony, along with Denise, decided to battle cancer with a smile, and a bold red lip, because WHY NOT?!
Years later, she is now CANCER FREE, and sharing her story with her new guide book 'Life Is Tough But So Are You' - we would highly recommend it, it will help get you through a health battle, a pandemic, homeschooling, the works!!!
We hope you enjoy, Briony and Denise.

Erin Molan & Anne Molan: I Don't Know How She Does It
Mothers and Daughters Podcast
07/04/21 • 58 min
When hearing what Erin Molan does in a day, you have to ask, I don't know how she does it? Her childhood alone, involved attending 16 schools, as her father Jim Molan was station around the world. Spending a great deal of time in Indonesia as a young girl, she leant from an early age about giving back to the community and thanks to her mother, Anne's guidance, an appreciation for what they were lucky to have. Anne, put her career aside, to raise her 4 kids, quite often single-handedly. But she never complained, she appreciated the roof that the army had put over their heads!
Despite her "rebellious" phase, borrowing her dad's army vehicle, getting caught smoking. Erin has a heart of gold and goes into battle for those who need her. Erin, has recently taken her Online Bullying Bill to parliament and it passed, so now those bullies, who post online, can be held accountable for their actions. All while doing morning radio on TodayFM, Sports Commentating on Channel 9, running a kids-clothing brand, and raising her daughter Eliza. All in a day's work for Erin.
After Sarah (Erin's sister) cancer battle, the Molan family are truly a family unit, and now they have come back together again to support her father, Jim's cancer battle. This chat gets a bit emotional towards the end.

Paula Joye and Ella Joye: The Joye of Magazines and Motherhood
Mothers and Daughters Podcast
09/19/21 • 72 min
From what was supposed to be a career in Law, as Paula says, she turned left and entered the doors of Vogue magazine. The mecca, for anyone who wants to be in magazines. She started from the bottom and worked her way up to the top, she reminisces of the days when magazines were at their peak and how turning left again when the digital wave hit, was the best thing she did!
No surprise, her daughter, Ella, has found her passion in fashion, creating her own label, My Friends Are Yours. Selling out her first collection in minutes!! She's learned great life lessons from Paula's worth ethic, but also the fact that Paula was an extremely hands on mother, made their bond and relationship even stronger.
And of course, having been in magazines myself, we had to talk about The Devil Wears Prada, and forgive my fan-girl moments but Paula was an idol in the halls of ACP Magazines. This interview was a real JOY, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Jane and Gabby Kanizay - Conquering Everest, Together
Mothers and Daughters Podcast
07/04/22 • 75 min
At 19, Gabby Kanizay, became the youngest Australian to summit Mt Everest. Twenty-four hours later she become the youngest woman in the world to complete the Everest-Lhotse (8514m) double; the world's fourth-highest mountain, and her climbing partner? Her mum, Jane. As if that wasn't enough, Gabby also holds the record as the youngest woman in the world, at 16 years old, to climb the sixth highest peak, Cho Oyu, Tibet. Her passion for mountaineering began as a 15-year-old with her first trip to Nepal; a trek to Everest Base Camp with her Mum, Jane. Gabby has also enjoyed running and triathlons at home. She recently finished Year 12 VCE and is now travelling in Europe for a Gap Year. Her next plans are to climb the remaining eleven peaks (above 8000m), as she now has three under her belt.
From a young age, Jane, 52, has always been into extreme sports skydiving, motorbike riding, trapeze, ultra-running and scuba diving, she now has a newfound love of mountaineering. She's extremely dedicated to her training regime for these climbs, while also being a mum of 4, to Sam, Gabby, Joe and Anna, and working as an educator and artist. She completed two 8000m summits alongside Gabby, Everest and Cho Oyu and enjoyed a well-earned sleep-in whilst Gabby headed up Lhotse! Jane is now rediscovering life as a single mum and climbed with the message of @teachusconsent; the holistic consent education campaign begun by Chanel Contos in 2020.
Despite having altitude sickness, Jane still has the climbing bug, and might just join Gabby for another peak, as long as it's under 8000m. We hope you enjoy this chat with this incredible mother and daughter.

Rachael Casella & Wendy Banham: A Mother's Mission Part 2
Mothers and Daughters Podcast
05/09/22 • 50 min
This is the concluding episode with Rachael and her mum Wendy. We talk through their relationship and family bond after the passing of Mackenzie, and how the family came together to drive Mackenzie's Mission to where it is today. Rachael also opens up about her IVF journey and how she felt after conceiving Zac. She has started the journey again, but this time, a surprise for the whole family, Rachael found out she is pregnant and expecting.
We thank Rachael and Wendy, for everything they shared. Rachael admitted she learned a lot from this chat with us and her mum, and that's what brings us the most joy.
We encourage everyone to follow Mackenzie's Mission, and if you are ready to conceive, please consider genetic testing before, that's exactly why Rachael has been pushing for funding from the government.

BONUS: Big Love for Little Lulu Love, Erin and Wendy
Mothers and Daughters Podcast
05/19/23 • 51 min
In honour of Erin's incredible fundraising for Epilepsy Action Australia (follow the link to donate), we wanted to revisit this incredible episode. Erin will be running a marathon, be sure to follow her on Little Lulu Love for all the updates. While Jordana is away we will be sharing some of our past episodes, be back live in your ears soon.
Erin is the mother of Luella, a gorgeous 18-month-old who suffers from West Syndrome. What gets her through her day, is the support she receives from her mum, Wendy. Luella has a rare type of epilepsy called West syndrome which causes her to suffer through hundreds of seizures/spasms a day. She is making meeting milestones that, in her original prognosis, wasn't possible thanks in large part to Erin and the wonderful intense therapies she goes to at NAPA.
Wendy is a very hands-on grandmother and mother, which has helped Erin through her postnatal depression, she allows Erin and her husband Dave, a night off every now and again, which is really essential for any parent, let alone parents who have to manage the added stresses of Luella's condition. As Erin says "Luella isn't a burden, it's her seizures that are a burden!"
There were many tears during this episode, but Erin has always been happy to push through the tears, so that, as a mum, and also as Luella's voice, she is heard. There needs to be more research and funding into West Syndrome and giving parents and guardians more support through NDIS.
This conversation has two-parts: listen now to part 2 of this conversation with an amazing mother and daughter. Thank you again to Erin and Wendy for sharing their story and being the most amazing advocates for Luella.
If you have an amazing story to share with us, please DM or email us. If you would like to be a sponsor, please email [email protected]
Thanks for tuning in, stay safe.
