236: Lisa Hodkginson on infertility & raising a daughter with Down Syndrome
Motherland Australia
10/13/24 • 55 min
I was speaking at the Rural Women Unite event in Charters Towers last month when I met Lisa Hodgkinson, a mum of 4 from Clermont in central Queensland. Lisa met her husband Glen when she was 18. By 19, the couple were married. And 2 weeks after they tied the knot, just as Lisa turned 20, she found out that she was infertile. It took 3 years, two pregnancy losses, and two more cycles, before their eldest daughter Mia was born. They continued to try for more kids, all via IVF. With their fourth baby Marlee, Lisa knew something was very different, and soon after she was born, Marlee was diagnosed with Down Syndrome. While it’s been a tough journey, she has enriched the lives of Glen and Lisa and their older girls, but living rurally has also had an impact on the care that Marlee can access. October is National Down Syndrome Awareness Month and it’s also Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness month. Lisa has experience with both. This is her story.
If you’ve experienced Pregnancy Loss and need support, call the 24/7 Red Nose Grief and Loss Support Line on 1300 308 307 or visit rednosegriefandloss.org.au. This is Lisa’s story.

Motherland Australia
08/04/24 • 56 min
Milly Taylor grew up near Paris. And she never intended to live on a farm, let alone a farm in Australia. But while on a University exchange to Melbourne where she was studying aero-space engineering, Milly met Michael Taylor. Michael was also studying engineering, but he had always planned on returning to his historic family’s farm, Taylors Run, located in Kentucky, New South Wales. They were living in Melbourne when they welcomed their first child, and still there when they fell pregnant with their second. It was then that the Taylor’s decided to return home to Taylor’s Run. And it was a far cry from Paris, to say the least! Milly felt very isolated at times, with little connection outside Michael’s parents and their family unit. Eventually, she convinced Michael to pack up their three children and move to Paris for a year. Milly has been in Australia for 25 years, she has an incredible story and a beautiful accent. This is her story.

Emma Hawkins is a mum of three, a business owner, and a digital influencer who lives on a farm just outside of Geelong. As a born and bred country girl, the land has become her quiet sanctuary away from the thundering roar of footy crowds and the prying eyes of the media. I felt like Emma and I could have talked forever, so strap yourselves in because we cover a lot and we laugh a lot too!
You'll hear all about her love story with the 'Tomahawk', through to her motherhood journey, and the isolation she felt during covid when Tom was whisked away to a quarantine training hub for two months. Plus- the hilarious reason why Emma refuses to ever own sheep again! This is her story.

187: Why Melissa Duniam turned to horses after a life-changing farm accident
Motherland Australia
08/13/23 • 58 min
Melissa Duniam lives on the far north west coast of Tasmania and has spent the past 20 years in the dairy industry. When she was 18, she fell pregnant with her first daughter and soon after, became a single mum after her relationship ended. Melissa once vowed she'd never marry a dairy farmer, but that's exactly what she went on to do a couple of years later after falling in love with her now husband. She had two more daughters, and navigated some intense highs and lows during early motherhood. Horses have always helped Melissa through the toughest moments of her life, and her biggest battle came in October 2016 after she was seriously injured in a side-side-by side accident on the farm. Physically and emotionally it's been an ordeal, with Melissa struggling with PTSD for a long time after the accident. That set her on a huge personal development journey where she leaned into her horses, and now helps others through her business, Leading Rein. Melissa is flying the Tassie flag this year as the state winner of the AgriFutures Rural women's award. This is her story.

246: The untold story of regional fashion powerhouse Holly Goodman
Motherland Australia
01/26/25 • 47 min
You’ve probably heard of my guest today. But chances are, what you haven’t heard is the story she’s about to tell you. Holly Goodman is a regional powerhouse. She’s a teacher turned small business owner turned fashion designer, and now runs her own label, Peter Bill. Holly met her husband Ben while they were both showing cattle at the Sydney Royal Easter show in High school. They both knew they wanted kids, but it didn’t happen instantly for them. As her friends were getting pregnant around her, Holly was struggling to conceive. But, after two years of trying, their first son was born and she was smitten. 17 months later, their second son arrived in the world. But things weren’t so smooth the second time around. Holly is a very ‘happy-go-lucky person’- but she struggled silently with her mental health for over a year. In this episode, she opens up for the first time about her struggles, how she got through it, and why, not long after, she decided to launch her fashion label. Today we discuss business, family life, mental health and why it’s okay to want to wind back your career a bit to focus on family. This is Holly Goodman’s story.
