More Than Bread
Dan Nold (Pastor of Calvary Church)
It's not enough to get into God's Word, we need to let His Word get into us. "More Than Bread" is a podcast featuring Pastor Dan Nold from Calvary Church in State College, PA. It focuses on simply reading the Bible (with a few comments) in the hopes that listening to God's Word, learning from God's Word and leaning into God's Word will shape our hearts, minds, and souls to bring us life. As Jesus said, "We do not live by bread alone, we live by every Word that comes from the mouth of God."

Ezekiel’s vision and prayer conversation in Ezekiel 37 is about as close as the Old Testament gets to Easter. How do we pray for more life? Perhaps it begins by understanding that resurrection is the work of a force outside of ourselves. I think we could all agree that in death I am helpless, out of control and unable to change my circumstances. I cannot resurrect myself. Ezekiel’s prayer session begins and ends with the Words of God, but it’s ending looks forward to Easter’s beginning, as God says, "I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live... Then you shall know that I am the Lord."
God says I will do it and when I do it, you will know that I am God. If you are in a dry bones season, this prayer is for you!

How am I doing at keeping my wedding vows? Maybe you don't think that question applies to you but in so many different ways, we are all impacted by how well people are keeping their wedding vows AND for those who are not married, Mark 10:1-16 is still a good reminder of the importance of having a good heart!
More Than Bread #78: Mark 3:20-35

How do I become part of the family of God? That's the question this episode ponders. Mark 2 gives us an opportunity to consider the characteristics of foes (enemies) of Jesus, fans of Jesus and family of Jesus. And here's the good news, being part of the family of God, having Jesus as our big brother, that's available for each and every one of us. You have a family waiting for you!

Our broken Christmas tree...I'm not talking about a crooked Fraser Fir; or a Charlie Brown Christmas tree. We're talking genealogy; family tree. Jesus's family tree is laid out in Matthew 1:1-17. Be honest, when you read Matthew's Christmas story, you start at vs 18. "Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows..." If you are like me, more than once you've skipped the first 17 verses. I mean Luke has a genealogy but he doesn't lead with it, it's buried in chapter 3. Matthew goes right to it. And the people that he lists, it's a who's who of who you wouldn't expect.
But that broken Christmas tree is a promise of hope. No matter what's in your past, your past cannot steal God's future. There is hope!
MTB #167: Ephesians 1 -- "Do I want to be blessed?"
More Than Bread

Jesus once asked a man, a man who had been an invalid for 38 years, a man who was doing everything he could (which wasn't much) to be healed, "Do you want to be made well?" Before you think, like I did, "that's a dumb question Jesus," ask yourself, "Do I want to be blessed?" That's the question we start with in Ephesians 1.
And perhaps it's not such a dumb question. Perhaps it's one that we all need to answer.
MTB #170: Ephesians 2:1-7 -- "But God..."

"But God..." There are a handful of "but God" moments in scripture that I call divine reversals. Ephesians chapter 2 contains one of my favorites. "We were dead, doomed, and damned, but God... is so rich in mercy..." I love those two words..."but God." Every time you find that divine reversal in scripture, stop and ponder it, let it soak into your soul. Those two words are the turning point of our stories. They mark the point where God turned our story into His-story. But God is so rich in mercy....

First of all, forgive the coughing interruptions in this one. I had a tickle in my throat that just wouldn't go away! More importantly, as we turn to Daniel 3, we dive into one of my favorite stories in the book of Daniel. It's all about the choice that Daniel's three friends made to worship God alone, even at the risk of being thrown into a fiery furnace. I love their answer to the King... "We know that our God is able to deliver us, but even if He won't, we still will not worship another god."
Wow. That's courageous integrity! Have you ever been faced with an opportunity to take a risky step of faith? Doing what's right, even if it leads to the fire?

Matthew 25-28 finishes up the gospel of Matthew. The passion and resurrection stories are of course, powerful. The cross and the empty tomb show us the love of God and the power of God. Together they fill us with hope. But then there is this story of the love-burst of Mary, that is where I focus at the end.

In the last episode, I told you the story of Carl McCumb. He died in the Alaskan wilderness because he didn't know the universal sign for "I need help." Do you know what the universal sign for "I need help" is? You raise both hands with palms to heavens. That's the universal signal for I need help. It’s not a bad thing to come to God's Word with a posture of helplessness, rather than independence.
In fact, before this episode is done, I'll encourage you to do that. Stand and raise your hands with your palms to the heavens and say, "God I need help.” Maybe you are thinking, what will people think. It doesn't matter. If you are in the wilderness in need of help, it doesn't matter what the caribou think...if you are desperate for help and help is in sight, raise your hands and ask for help!

You may have noticed that every once in awhile as we’ve gone through the first two chapters of Daniel, I’ve made an application to the political arena in which we find ourselves today. Actually it’s part of why I chose Daniel. I think Daniel has some important stuff to say to Christians in our current culture, including our political culture. So that’s going to shape my this episode, as we review chapters one and two.
And to be honest, more than anything, this review gives me hope, because when we wake up on the morning after election day, God is still in control of whomever thinks they are in control! Choose your Kingdom well!
