Moral Repair expands mainstream tech narratives, celebrates profound insight from Black philosophy and culture, and promotes technology when it serves the common good. Listeners leave each episode with new ways to think about tech’s impacts and apply practical wisdom in their own lives.

Starting October 4, new episodes launch every 1st and 3rd Wednesday wherever you listen to podcasts. Moral Repair is for people creating, using, and being shaped by tech, wondering about its implications, and questioning what they can do about it.

Rev. Annanda Barclay is a death doula who explores life well-lived, a non-sectarian chaplain, and a Stanford researcher of moral injury and repair as it relates to tech.
Dr. Keisha E. McKenzie is a technical communicator, strategist, and advocate who applies humanism and systems thinking to questions of well-being, public good, and ecology.

In Season 1, episode themes range from recommendation algorithms and a Black ethical standard for evaluating tech to interactive holograms and hip hop as cultural memory tools. Other episodes explore moral repair, ideologies and philosophies shaping Silicon Valley, AI ethics, inclusive design, and tech well-being.

Why did you start this show?

We wanted a podcast that educated listeners on tech, had a message more practical and empowering than doom and gloom, and left listeners with a sense of curiosity, feelings of empowerment, and joined us in a spirit of right-sized playfulness. We wanted to do this from an Africana wisdom perspectives. The knowledge, wisdom, and contribution Black people, are frequently overlooked, normatively undervalued. This podcast is for everybody who is interested in Black wisdom applied to tech.

What do you hope listeners gain from listening to your show?

We hope our listeners feel more knowledgeable when it comes to tech and its impact in their lives and society. we hope they feel a sense of empowerment and entitlement to their rights instead of accepting doom and gloom tech bro narratives. We hope folx take non-supremacist pride in who they are no matter their backgrounds. We hope folx receive practical approaches to tech, while experiencing curiosity, levity and playfulness.

Which episode are you most proud of?

S1E2 “Black History, Holograms & How We Remember” We used our podcast as a platform for others to share their stories. It was such a great feeling to make the work of the episode in such rich storytelling community. It was also important to honor the wisdom bearers of the past and the present.

What is your vision for your show?

The vision of the show is to shed light on the moral injuries technology causes while giving life hacks to methods of moral repair from the rich legacy of Black wisdom. Black wisdom has culturally and historically adapted to uniquely grapple with the moral injuries caused by the Western world. This show invites listeners to learn from that wisdom without appropriating it, as a gift for all in these challenging tech times.

How did you come up with the name for your podcast?

Our production team helped to come up with a name that got right to the point. It wasn’t easy, but our Executive Producer Genevieve nailed it!

Annanda Barclay is an end of life planner, chaplain, and moral injury researcher. Her work is centered on the impact moral injury can have on living a meaningful and dignified life, all the way to the end. Keisha McKenzie is a technical communicator and narrative strategist with a knack for asking tough questions and making experts accessible.
