There is a small town in Central Montana that is home to an amazing business that for years has been one of THE leaders in the boating industry and no we don't mean just in Montana but in the entire United States!!
In this episode of the Montana Outdoor Podcast, we continue our quest to find the knowledge you need to find the right boat for you. We had the opportunity to spend some time with Dave Juvik of Townsend Marine. Dave is a fascinating guy with a tremendous amount of knowledge. He is one of those rare guys who started his career in the back of a boat dealership in the service department and worked his way up to the front of the dealership. He is one of the most knowledgeable people in the entire county when it comes to Lund Boats as well as other brands. Lund Boats are one of the most popular and iconic brands of fishing boats in the world and believe it or not Townsend Marine, located in the small town of Townsend Montana, sells more Lund boats then almost any other dealership in America! So, if folks across the country can buy a Lund most anywhere in America why do they come to Townsend Marine? After you listen to this podcast you will know and completely understand the answer to that question. Hint: between Dave and the wonderful owners of Townsend Marine, Chris and Desiree McFadden, the only people that likely know more about boats are the manufactures themselves!
Just click here to send an email and or call Dave Juvik and the gang at Townsend Marine. Also be sure and click here to take a look at their new and used boats. They have a great website at townsendmarine.com so be sure and see all they offer from fishing boats to pontoon boats to sterndrive wakeboard boats and more!

Montana Outdoor Podcast - The Secret Life of Montana's Walleye!

In this episode of the Montana Outdoor Podcast, you will learn all about Montana's Walleye fishery! Maybe we should have called this podcast "Walleye 101" or if we wanted to get a little cheeky, "Mommy Where Do Walleye Come From". But seriously this week we had Fisheries Biologist Heath Headley from FWP Region 6 in Glasgow, Montana on the show and we were able to learn all about Walleye in Fort Peck Reservoir and how Walleye are reared at the Hatcheries in Fort Peck and Miles City and placed into lakes all around Montana. The conversation with Heath went even deeper than that, however. Downrigger Dale and The Captain asked Heath all kinds of questions, like:

How do you collect Walleye eggs for the hatcheries during the spawning season when the lake is still covered with ice like it is this year?
How do they usually collect Walleye eggs and how many do they usually collect? (Spoiler Alert! You are not going to believe that number!!! WOW!!)

If they can’t collect many eggs this year due to the ice cover will the walleye populations around Montana be, ok?
Do big Walleye produce offspring that will also become big Walleye?
Does a Walleye return to the same spawning grounds it went to during the last spawning season?
Wait a minute! How far did you say that tagged Walleye traveled!?
Can interested people actually participate in the Walleye egg collection effort?
And those are just a few of the questions that were answered in this fascinating podcast.

So, give it a listen now! After you listen, if you still have questions about Walleye in Montana you can email FWP Fisheries Biologist Heath Headley by clicking here. This week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast, fishing guide and three-time Montana Walleye Angler of the Year, Jason Mundel from Ripp’n Lipps Guide Service joins Downrigger and The Captain on the podcast to talk about using fishing electronics to catch, not just more fish, but bigger fish! Having all the right electronics is of course something most every fisherman has or is working on having but knowing how to use them and how to get the most out of them rarely happen for many of us. That is why Captain and Downrigger called Jason. He truly has turned the use of fish finders, electronic maps, and imaging into an artform. The good news is he was more than happy to share his knowledge on the Montana Outdoor Podcast! If getting the most out of your electronics, finding the fish you are looking for and then catching them, interests you then you should listen this fascinating podcast!
There really is something for every lake, reservoir, and large river fishermen in this podcast. Jason starts by explaining how to find fish without having any electronics and then goes trough how to use very basic electronics all the way to how to use the latest gear that can show you not only where the fish are but what the heck they are doing down there! In fact, did you know that some electronics can help you not only find the fish but find the size you are looking for? Oh, but it gets even better! Jason talks about how to use some of the more advanced gear to even help you target the species you are looking for! Yeah, it is a whole new world out there when you know how to really make your electronics work the way you have always dreamed, they could.
Of course, Jason’s main business is guiding, and he has a whole bunch of repeat customers that rave about the days they have spent with Jason out on the water. In fact, not only is hiring Jason a great way to go catch fish but it is a great way to learn even more about how to fish using electronics. If you would like to book a trip with Jason, you can click here to call him at ‭(406) 253-3028‬. You can also email him by clicking here. This week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale talks to the Season 6 winner of the History Channel’s popular TV reality series, “Alone”. You must hear Jordan Jonas’s story of how he not only survived but won the incredible challenge. You will hear how Jordan fought off starvation, loneliness, wild animals, and the brutal weather conditions of Canada’s Northwest Territories to claim his spot in outdoor survival history. How did he do it? Well, the amazing life he lived prior to being selected to compete against 9 other incredible individuals on the History Channel’s extremely popular reality series, for sure had something to do with it. Spoiler alert! He left home as a teenager and jumped from railcar to railcar to travel the country! Thus, Jordan likely became one of the only known teenage hobos in America. So yeah, that might have helped prepare him for that unbelievable challenge. Oh, but he was just getting warmed up! After spending his teen years as a hobo riding the rails all alone, he went to Russia to help build an orphanage! That led him to take things to an extreme again and head deep into the Siberian wilderness and believe it or not, it just gets crazier from there!! One of the stories Jordan tells Rigger is about the fact that while competing in the Alone series he was able to kill a rabbit to eat on his first day out in the arctic wilderness. He talks about how rabbits were all over the place. Rigger replied, “Oh so you had a pretty reliable food source then.” Jordan explains that you must have fat to survive in those conditions and arctic rabbits barely have any. So, though he could eat lots of rabbits they in no way could stop him from starving to death. There is even a term for it, rabbit starvation! So, where did Jordan find that all important source of fat? You will have to listen to this week’s Montana Outdoor podcast to find out and hopefully you won’t have a weak stomach when you do listen. What does Jordan do now? He lives in Darby Montana, but you will have to listen to find out the rest. The answer to that question is really cool and when you listen you can even learn how you can go hunt with and learn survival techniques from Jordan!
After you listen, if you want to find out more about Jordan Jonas click here. If you want to learn more about the History Channel’s Alone TV Series click here. Want to take one of Jordan’s Wilderness Courses? Click here to find out more and book it! If you would like to ask Jordan any questions you can click here to send him an email. Downrigger talked to Matthew about what the weather outlook is for the rest of this winter here in Montana. Rigger and Matthew even went way beyond that and talked about what the weather looks like for the State this spring, summer, and fall. Is it good news or is it not looking so good as far as moisture and drought conditions? Are we in a El Niño or a La Niña? Do you know what those things are? Who named them that? This week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale talks to outdoor reporter, writer and Hunting and Conservation Editor for Outdoor Life, Andrew McKean. Andrew wrote a wonderful article for the 2025 March/April edition of Montana Outdoors Magazine. The title of the article is Double Bacon Cheeseburger with Fins. This fascinating article covers the history and the effect of the introduction of the Cisco into Fort Peck Reservoir over 40 years ago and the effects this amazing forge fish continues to have on the sport fish that live in the Reservoir. Of course, most avid Fort Peck Anglers are aware of the Cisco, but they may not be aware of how the Cisco continues to grow the population of world class sport fish in the reservoir and how they are changing the behavior of the larger of the Walleye, Pike, Lake Trout, of course the Chinook or King Salmon and maybe even the larger Catfish. Now, many of you reading this may be asking what do you mean? Well when you listen to this Podcast you will hear Andrew talk about why more and more anglers are catching for example large Walleye and Pike suspended in deep water, often when they are fishing for the King Salmon! In fact, during the podcast Andrew even gives a stunning prediction that one of these days soon there will a new record Pike caught deep that will exceed...wait until you hear that weight! He also talks about other positive things about this amazing forge fish that you will for sure find VERY interesting. Yeah, you will learn that the story of the Cisco is a rare success story for a nonnative forge fish. So, mash that play button and listen to this fascinating podcast about the Double Bacon Cheeseburger with Fins.
