Those gentlemen represent Brixtel Defense an ammunition company that is spending 125 million dollars to build an ammunition manufacturing plant in Glendive Montana! You will also learn why this Virginia based company choose Glendive Montana as the place they wanted to expend their business in such a major way. Another thing the boys from Brixtel told Rigger about was the type of ammunition they will be manufacturing in Glendive. There is much more than that waiting for you to learn when you listen. This week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale talks to Dave Chichester of Plugit Tackle. Dave talks about how he got into the tackle business when he started making lures for himself when the quality of his favorite lures that he used to buy started going downhill. Course little did he know that would turn into a thriving specialty lure company called Plugit Tackle. Why "Plugit"? Well, when you listen to this Podcast you will learn that Plugit makes wooden plug lures using a bit of s high tech lathe. Another thing that surprised Rigger and will likely you as well is the type of wood that Dave uses. So give this podcast a listen to find out what kind of wood that is and why Dave uses it. What kind of fish go after Plugit Tackle? Dave loved to go after the Gerrard Rainbow Trout also known as the Kamloops Rainbow Trout. These are the biggest Rainbows you will ever find. Dave often fishes for them sometimes in Lake Pend Oreille in the panhandle of Idaho but most of the time you can find Dave trolling his Plugit Tackle Plugs after those monsters in Northwest Montana. Now where would that be? Give the podcast a listen and you will not only find that out, but you’ll also learn how fast to troll, how to use planer boards and a few other techniques that are amazing. But Plugit Tackle is not just a giant Rainbow catcher, Dave talks about the other species of fish in Montana that can't seem to resist going after his plugs, like Walleye, Pike, Salmon and the list goes on. This is a super interesting podcast full of great techniques and much more. So click the play button and get to listening so you can start to put some Montana Monsters of your own in the boat!

This week the host of The Montana Outdoor Podcast, Downrigger Dale talks to Ed Beall Owner of Capital Sports and Western and member of the Montana Private Land and Public Wildlife Advisory Committee (PLPW). Rigger and Ed cover a TON of topics about hunter and landowner relations. Ed has been working hard for years now to help get outdoor sportsmen and women more access to private lands across Montana and when you click here to listen to this week’s podcast you will learn that all the work Ed and the other folks on the PLPW has done as well as of course the incredible work the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks has done, is starting to pay off. In fact, at this point it now is up to all of us to take the next step to make it happen. This is the most asked about topic in Downriggers listener emails. Ed and so many others have been dedicated to building relationships between landowners and those that love hunt, fish, and just get out in Montana’s great outdoors for a long time now and finally you will learn some of the most important things you can do to gain access to private lands by building your own personal relationships with landowners. BUT there is a right way and yes, a wrong way to do that. Listen to the podcast and learn what the steps are to get the access you have always wanted. There is an interesting side effect to doing this. That is, you will likely make some lifelong friendships and learn things you likely never thought you would learn. To learn about the right way to approach landowners click here to take the Hunter-Landowner Stewardship Test! You will learn a ton of valuable info when you take this test which is part of the Hunter-Landowner Stewardship Program!
Another topic that Rigger covered with Ed is VERY cool. They uncovered a source of hunting and fishing information for every region in Montana. It is all about, that often sought after and rarely found, local knowledge of where the fish and big game is and what you need to know to harvest what you are hunting and fishing for. You may have heard a little about this when you have heard The Captain talk about “Montana Approved” stores. Listen to the podcast to learn more and click here to get a list of links to get you started on finding what you are hunting and fishing for! If you have questions for Ed or other members of the PLPW, click here to email Downrigger your questions and he will get them answered for you. You can also click here to learn all about the It’s Up to Us campaign. There is lots and lots of great info on that web page!

This week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast we continued our series about learning waterways and species of fish that are new to you by hiring a fishing guide. Your host Downrigger Dale sat down with fishing guide Don Wilkins of 56 Fishing Guide Service for an amazing discussion about learning fishing techniques with fishing technology and oh so much more. Don guides on Fort Peck Reservoir and though he is fairly new to guiding he is hardly new to fishing; he’s been doing it his whole life. Rigger got to know Don through the Captain of the Montana Outdoor Radio Show. It seemed like every time Rigger and the Captain would see Don out on the water he was reeling in a huge Salmon, Lake Trout or Walleye. In fact, Don was the first person that Rigger had met that could catch the big salmon through the ice on Fort Peck. You will also learn about how Don uses his Garmin Livescope to help teach his clients jigging and other techniques. It really is amazing how it shows the jig and the fish approaching it and how his clients can see how the fish reacts to their technique. When you listen you will also hear Don go into detail about the gear, lures, bait and more that for he uses to catch the different species of fish in Fort Peck, and of course the techniques he uses to catch the King of the Fort Peck fish, the mighty King Salmon. WARNING: once you listen to all the things he tells Rigger about catching the incredible King Salmon you might just catch a nasty case of Black Jaw Fever! That is name for the addiction you will have once you catch on of those incredibly powerful fish. Just know that currently there is no cure for Black Jaw Fever. Don Wilkins can ease your symptoms by teaching you how to catch them but that just leaves you wanting more once the thrill wears off. Gang, DO NOT miss this Podcast!! You will learn a TON from Don not just about catching Kings but about catching other species as well!
If you want to learn more about Don Wilkins click here to view the 56 Fishing Guide Service, LLC Facebook page. Be sure and check out the incredible pictures on the Facebook Page by clicking here and watch those Livescope videos by clicking here. You can also learn more about Don by clicking here. This week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale talks to Dr. Christopher Guy, Assistant Leader of the Montana Cooperative Fishery Research Unit and Affiliate Professor at Montana State University. Chris is one of the creators of the Fishes of Montana App. This is a great App that everyone who loves to fish or just wants to learn more about the fish we have in Montana should have on their phone. It truly is a wealth of information, and the best part is it is super user friendly and describes the fish in normal language and not science speak. No this isn’t your daddy’s Field Guide by any stretch! Don’t get us wrong if you want to get into the technical jargon the app has that too but for most anglers, we just want to have up to date info that can quickly help us out when we reel in something and wonder “what the heck did I just catch?”. Yeah, when you listen to the Podcast you will hear Dr Guy give a step-by-step example of how to quickly identify any fish in Montana. Another cool thing is it can help you find where a species of fish that you are looking for can be found in all the lakes and rivers it swims in Montana! Once you start using it you will have it at the top of your Apps list on your phone. The app is totally free to anyone that wants to download it. Now how the heck did Chris and his fellow App developers pull that off? Listen to learn all about that and who else was part of the App development team. Rigger also asked Chris about his 30+ years of research on the fish in our great State! Another question that Rigger asked Chis was what his favorite fish is to catch. We thought it would be one of Montana’s famous trout but that was not even close! Another super interesting thing is, of all the fish that Dr. Guy has come across in Montana during his 30+ years of research is the fish that he has found to be the most interesting. What do think it is? You guessed it...you'll need to listen to find out!

This week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale talks to the Season 6 winner of the History Channel’s popular TV reality series, “Alone”. You must hear Jordan Jonas’s story of how he not only survived but won the incredible challenge. You will hear how Jordan fought off starvation, loneliness, wild animals, and the brutal weather conditions of Canada’s Northwest Territories to claim his spot in outdoor survival history. How did he do it? Well, the amazing life he lived prior to being selected to compete against 9 other incredible individuals on the History Channel’s extremely popular reality series, for sure had something to do with it. Spoiler alert! He left home as a teenager and jumped from railcar to railcar to travel the country! Thus, Jordan likely became one of the only known teenage hobos in America. So yeah, that might have helped prepare him for that unbelievable challenge. Oh, but he was just getting warmed up! After spending his teen years as a hobo riding the rails all alone, he went to Russia to help build an orphanage! That led him to take things to an extreme again and head deep into the Siberian wilderness and believe it or not, it just gets crazier from there!! One of the stories Jordan tells Rigger is about the fact that while competing in the Alone series he was able to kill a rabbit to eat on his first day out in the arctic wilderness. He talks about how rabbits were all over the place. Rigger replied, “Oh so you had a pretty reliable food source then.” Jordan explains that you must have fat to survive in those conditions and arctic rabbits barely have any. So, though he could eat lots of rabbits they in no way could stop him from starving to death. There is even a term for it, rabbit starvation! So, where did Jordan find that all important source of fat? You will have to listen to this week’s Montana Outdoor podcast to find out and hopefully you won’t have a weak stomach when you do listen. What does Jordan do now? He lives in Darby Montana, but you will have to listen to find out the rest. The answer to that question is really cool and when you listen you can even learn how you can go hunt with and learn survival techniques from Jordan!
After you listen, if you want to find out more about Jordan Jonas click here. If you want to learn more about the History Channel’s Alone TV Series click here.
