What comes to mind when you hear Top Gun and Tom Cruise? What about aviator shades and Ray-Ban?

Whether you’re flying, driving or even walking to your next meeting, we aim to entice you to put on your sunny shades as you turn into this conversation as we speak to the parent company of Ray-Ban, EssilorLuxottica.

Speaking of EssilorLuxottica, the company was formed in 2018 by the combination of Italian frame manufacturer and luxury eyewear specialist Luxottica, as well as French optical lens producer Essilor in a deal worth 46 billion euros.

Fast forward to the present, EssilorLuxottica prides itself as a global leader in design, manufacture and distribution of lenses, frames and sunglasses, with over two centuries of experience behind the company. Its eyewear brands include Ray-Ban, Oakley, Costa, Vogue Eyewear and more.

EssilorLuxottica is an interesting company to look at for a number of reasons. Perhaps the most important reason is its long term partnership with Meta to develop smart eyewear technologies.

To this end, EssilorLuxottica had in April 2024 launched its second generation smart glasses with Meta, where users can engage in video calls with WhatApp and Messenger to share their views with others in real time. EssilorLuxottica also confirmed Meta’s interest to buy a stake in the company in July. But what are the opportunities when it comes down to wearable technology?

Meanwhile, EssilorLuxottica agreed to purchase Supreme for US$1.5 billion to move into the streetwear segment. It also bought a 5 per cent stake in camera maker Nikon Corporation – but where do these developments fit in the bigger picture for the eyewear maker?

On Under the Radar, Money Matters’ finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Alessio Smiderle, Chief Financial Officer (CFO), APAC & Greater China, EssilorLuxottica.

Singapore shares opened weaker today, following overnight losses in global markets as surging Treasury yields weighed on investor sentiments.

In early trade, the Straits Times Index headed down 1.1 per cent to 3,157.6 points, after 145.1 million securities changed hands in the broader market.

In terms of companies to watch for today, we have engineering company Advanced, after the Securities Investors Association (Singapore) yesterday raised questions over why the firm’s capital reduction exercise appears to have failed.

Elsewhere, from more on GM and Toyota’s latest sales figures to Softbank CEO Masayoshi’s comments on, not Artificial Intelligence but Artificial General Intelligence, more corporate headlines remain in focus.

On Market View, The Evening Runway’s finance presenter Chua Tian Tian dived into the details with David Poh, Head of Investment and ESG Strategies, South Asia, Amundi.

Money Matters with Hongbin Jeong and Chua Tian Tian - Under the Radar: Flexxon on the value behind marrying hardware and cybersecurity, Launches at CES 2024
play

01/16/24 • 20 min

It’s all about storing your computer data safely and securely through the use of hardware solutions.

You might recall storing data in hard disk drives in the past which often has slow reading and writing speeds.

Fast forward to today, super-fast SSDs or Solid State Drive that use NAND-based flash memory to store data are more commonly used, as they are said to be more reliable and efficient than hard drives.

But while they may be faster, the question remains as to whether using SSDs are more secure. And that’s the problem that our guest Flexxon wants to address.

Founded in 2007, Flexxon is a Singapore-headquartered firm that marries cybersecurity solutions and hardware. In particular, the firm launched the world’s first AI-embedded firmware based cybersecurity solution called the X-PHY® Cybersecure SSD in 2021.

The solution detects anomalies in behavioural data access patterns and effectively shuts down potential incursions in real-time to prevent critical data loss and exposure.

The solution has since been integrated into laptops with major PC makers including Lenovo, ASUS, HP, and Thomson Computing. But how does it work exactly?

Meanwhile, the Heliconia-backed firm also said it has 30 patents under its belt, but what can we look forward to in terms of its product pipeline for the year?

On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway’s finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Camellia Chan, CEO and Founder, FLEXXON.

If you have not been to the movies of late, this conversation is probably a hint for you to do so.

But if you’ve been to the cinemas of late, chances are you might have watched the Barbie Movie, Oppenheimer or the latest instalment of the Mission:Impossible franchise, the Dead Reckoning Part 1.

Speaking of which, beyond the cast and directors, have you ever wondered what made the movies come to life?

What about the visual system that makes the iconic pink colour pop in the Barbie Movie. Or the immersive sound system that makes you feel the blast in Oppenheimer or that car chase in Mission Impossible?

Our guest for today is Dolby Laboratories. The firm works with artists, storytellers and businesses to revolutionise entertainment and communications with its visual and audio systems such as the Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision and Dolby Cinema.

But how does this work exactly, and are these players considered at Dolby Laboratories, customers or partners? Also, what are some of the products in its pipeline for this year and the next?

On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway’s finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Ashim Mathur, Vice President, APAC, Dolby Laboratories.
