Mommying While Muslim is a one of a kind podcast where two American born and bred Muslim moms share their experiences to raise second generation kids. Having experienced both pre and post 9/11 America, they're acutely aware of the unique challenges their families face on top of the regular messes that all moms share. Mommying While Muslim is a space to take back their stories, and tell those no one will air on the news or portray fully or fairly in the media. Zaiba Hasan and Uzma Jafri are moms first, careerwomen second, and global citizens at heart. They meet taboo topics head on because they weren't allowed to do it growing up, not at home or at school and work. They aim to better their immediate households, communities, and their momsisterhood the world over by telling the truths sometimes people don't want to face or to hear. Not everyone has the privileges they have and they are eager to learn, more than they are to share their own experiences. Always looking to give back, they find women and families who need a mic because no one needs a voice; they just need an opportunity to speak. Besides tough social issues, they also tackle political ones because when laws affect their kids, they're coming for them as well as the ones who make them! There's no lane that doesn't get taken here. Along the way, they recruit momallies for Muslim Americans who have been inordinately targeted for the last 20 years. True moms know that ALL our children deserve to be safe, loved, and happy, and we bust every yellow brick on the Islamaphobic road to make sure they all are. If you like good trouble, this one's for you!

Shownotes:

This month’s Love & Marriage series closes out with the expertise of Tawakaltu Busari of Hitched!, a Muslim matchmaking service based in Houston. Not an app-based method, Hitched! provides halal opportunities for singles to meet organically and not in the traditional survey method historically used to match people. There aren’t speed dates or elaborate networks to figure out who can plan forever together at Hitched!. Instead, the company focuses on spiritual matchmaking as more important than the pedigrees that traditional matchmakers used to determine compatibility. This is NOT how Sima Auntie works on Netlfix! A Muslim company specializing in how couples need to operate with a goal of success in Islam as much as success in this world is the one we want to talk about, and talk to.

With rising divorce rates in the Muslim community, this is important for parents, young adults, new adults, single women, newly single women, and those men who listen to us on the DL. We know ya’ll are out there!

Rubina Cohen, our recurring contributor, joins us today to give insight into her unique experience with PPD. We compare notes, commiserate, provide some more facts, and talk about resources available to mom sisters. It’s just not talked about enough in our regular circles and we don’t want to see another mom go through this. So let us remove the multicultural stigma Muslim American moms face for our community.
Rubina's experience inspired her to create a product for postpartum moms as well as a safe online space for mothers dealing with postpartum depression. She turned her pain into gain. Check it out!

Mommying While Muslim - The Road to Jannah

Trigger alert: child loss

Abeeha Hassan joins us today to discuss the very recent stillbirth of her newborn. She talks to us about how she grieved her daughter and talks about normalizing it contrary to what most Muslim cultures permit in society. Her process of closure may seem familiar to someone else who has gone this journey alone and we are so touched that Abeeha chose to share her story with us. We pray a momsister finds comfort in knowing there’s someone sharing her story of loss and is available to talk about it.

This month's series is about how to do hard things, and in our opinion, burying our own children is the hardest. Abeeha is a model of sabr, taqwa, as well as normalizing our emotions. She helps us understand that saying Jannah’s name is normal. We always seek to better support our moms in all their situations, and the education she provides on how to do that is invaluable. Grab a Kleenex, but there are moments where we find gratitude and laugh through the tears.

Zaiba and Uzma ended up having to have a conversation about abortion, as well as their religious and feminist views on the topic. This is not a scholarly episode, rather a discourse between friends on personal, very individualized choices they would or would not make if they were faced with an unplanned pregnancy as Muslim American moms.

To get an Islamic opinion on abortion, please talk to your favorite Islamic scholar. You can refer to our September episodes on female Islamic scholarship available on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, or Spotify. Mommying While Muslim - Election 2020: The Stages of Grief Part I-Denial
play

11/12/20 • 42 min

Zaiba & Uzma discuss election results which, at the time of this recording, was not yet called, but was highly suggestive of results they did not expect. Why don’t they have cause to celebrate regardless of who is elected this year?

This is a darker episode, with some sad reflections about what the turnout means in terms of the moral compass of America and who our real allies are. Conscience does not have to be consistent with only a political ideology, rather requires us to think, act, and vote along economic and social plans as well, especially those of us who are Muslim Americans. A close election isn’t just a close call, but a larger revelation about the limitations of white liberalism/privilege, a two party system, and political rhetoric in this nation.

Now that we know who the President of the United States is, this is a great reflection of where so many of us were one week ago. This month will be a Kubler Ross stages of grief series reflecting on this election and what it means about our society. When we know better, we vote better, we do better.

Dr. Rukhsana Chaudhry comes on today to kick off our mental health series and gives us SO MUCH insight into our anxieties and how to deal with our kids’. Let’s face it: this pandemic has kicked our collective butts and we’ve seen changes in our kids and in ourselves we haven’t handled well all the time. We can do better by learning better, and when we do that, we MOM better.

Learning to sit with discomfort to teach our kids how to do the same can hit childhood anxiety head-on. Dr. Chaudhry addresses teen needs as well, sharing current research on pandemic-induced social isolation as potentially more hazardous in teens. Filtering information to quell teen anxiety and learning to recognize the signs of mental discomfort and illness in our kids will be key, and the resources she shares with us are amazing. Most importantly, continuing to work against the stigma of mental illness in some Muslim communities is going to be key, so HAVE THE CONVERSATIONS, ya’ll!

Don’t forget to click on the links in the show notes to recognize the signs, be mental health first aid proficient, and learn the lingo of mental health. Tune in to the rest of our episodes on mental health dropping this month, every Thursday at 6 pm EST on Alexa, Apple Podcasts, and Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts!

The author of the incredibly popular and much loved book Secrets of Divine Love, A. Helwa, joins us today to talk about her book and what it brings to our souls during these turbulent times. Her popular blog @quranquotesdaily inspires and reminds us of Allah SWT daily as we scroll through fashion and makeup on IG. Secrets of Divine Love is a motivational and inspiring guide to help experience the Qur’an and the Islamic tradition from a place of love, passion, and joy.

She explains the anonymity of her persona, as well as the importance of authentic connection with each other. She also candidly reminds us that Allah is in control during a time when we all live under delusions of control. More pearls are in this episode than we document here, so take a listen and get the book!

If you haven’t scheduled to listen in on our Firewalker series this month, you’ll want to. These moms aren’t just walking over hot coals--they’re doing it through billowing blazes while taking names and kicking butt.

Whether you're ready for it or not, Shazia Imam, host of the Feminine & Fulfilled podcast joins us to drop truths about what it looks like when NOTHING works out. She's faced the worst of what we daily pray for protection against. How she overcame everything is a story to hear, and now it informs her important work for women! Her declarations to Allah SWT are aspirational and affirming so listen in to learn them.

Cool fact: This episode was recorded live on Facebook and YouTube but ran unrecorded for the first time on Clubhouse with live QA afterward! Super fun.

Since they couldn’t find a Muslim mom who voted for Trump, Zaiba recruited her husband, Zafar, to return to the podcast for this episode to help understand the 35% of Muslims surveyed by the Associated Press who said that they planned to vote for Trump--and probably did. It was CLOSE, y’all! Could the Muslim vote afford to be so split? What are the reasons that it wasn’t a landslide with 100% of Muslim Americans voting against the current POTUS?

Zafar does a great job calming Zaiba and Uzma down in this episode to demonstrate that 35% of Muslims voting in a way we don’t understand isn’t so significant, statistically or historically, and diversity of opinions is considered a blessing in Islam. Does everything he says resonate with your favorite podcasting duo? NO! Hear about white grievance vs. privilege, the right to return, the Democratic party’s role in turning away the Muslim vote through doublespeak, and the silver lining in having lived through the last 4 years under this administration.

Tune in for the discourse! “All dialogue is good dialogue,” as Zafar Hasan says.
