Ep.8 MATRESCENCE with Megan MacCutcheon
Mom Chat with Mamistad
05/06/24 • 34 min
FINALLY! The world is beginning to understand that becoming a mother comes with SO MUCH MORE than most of us ever realized! Matrescence helps us understand just how "normal" the roller coaster of becoming a mother really is - and in my opinion, why the world needs to give us all one HUGE BREAK!
Megan MacCutcheon LPC, PMH-C joins me as we talk about MATRESCENCE - the process of a woman becoming a mother and all the changes that come with it -
biologically, spiritually, psychologically, socially, existentially, spiritually...
I first learned about it in 2018 in a TED Talk by Dr. Alexandra Sacks. You know, the one I share with all new Mamistad members? :) Since then, I've become fascinated with it!
Join us as we talk about the many ways this concept can help us better understand and respect motherhood and parenthood in general!

Ep.6 Black Maternal Health Week with Samantha of DC Metro Maternity
Mom Chat with Mamistad
04/11/24 • 38 min
Greetings and welcome as we recognize Black maternal Health Week from April 11-17, 2024!
The purpose of #BMHW24 is to highlight efforts led by BlackMamasMatterAlliance (BMMA), and collectively work toward a future where ALL Black Mamas have the rights, respect, and resources to thrive throughout their lives-including in their reproductive years. This year's theme is “Our Bodies STILL Belong to Us: Reproductive Justice NOW!”
In this episode we chat with Samantha Griffin, a Certified Birth & Postpartum Doula and Certified Childbirth Educator. She founded DC Metro Maternity and brought on a team of other passionate certified female doulas of color and together, they have been supporting black families in the DC, suburban Maryland, and Northern Virginia areas since 2018.
Samantha shares her profound mission as a black doula working with women of color:What we really try to do as doulas is take away so much of that fear. Make sure that people know that someone is there with them. And that it can be an experience that's really beautiful and valuable and can help you. See new sides of yourself in ways that are so inspiring as opposed to, "Oh my gosh, this is terrifying. I can't do it..." because we can do it. You know, even if it's our first time and no matter what sort of birth you have, whether it's unmedicated or you want an epidural, or even if you need a C section, like there's so much beauty and honor in that.
We also discuss:
-Black Maternal health Week-historical reasons women of color are still "catching up" when it comes to health services
-how doulas can help every mother
-postpartum doulas and the importance of accepting help!
-Samantha's special offer to high risk pregnant black women: Grounded Birth: A Course for High Risk Pregnancy

TRAILER: Mom Chat with Mamistad
Mom Chat with Mamistad
02/10/24 • 2 min
Hi, I'm Cynthia. In 2005, I created Mamistad as a hobby to help first-time moms find their new mama tribes. Now with thousands of Mami members and counting and DC, Austin and Denver, and having welcomed thousands of babies, I realize it's no longer a hobby. It's a necessity.
We are still here growing and expanding to new cities. We're still here celebrating and commiserating because honestly, That's what it's all about. We all face ups and downs and motherhood. I promise, IT'S NOT JUST YOU.
It's time to push the boundaries and see moms for who we really are. Some of the most incredible creatures on the planet. It's time to see new motherhood as more than just having a baby. Having a child touches every aspect of a birthing person's life. Until we acknowledge and respect that moms will continue to approach new motherhood as the time to buy all "the necessities"without realizing that what they need most is to pay attention to their own mental health, and to make sure they acknowledge and make space for their own thoughts and feelings as they prepare to open the amazing Technicolor door of motherhood.Worse without this realization, some new moms will continue to suffer silently and often unnecessarily - not realizing that what they're experiencing is actually kind of normal! With a little knowledge beforehand, we can likely save ourselves a lot of struggle later. So many of us think that we must be doing it wrong without realizing there is not one right way to give birth and care for a baby. We all have our own unique journeys, and this is where we celebrate them!
So, whether you're a Mamistad Mom or not, we want you to be a part of the conversation. We're not experts, we're just a sisterhood of moms going with the flow together. Join Mom Chat as we share our everyday motherhood, joys and struggles, challenges and triumphs. We'll call on some of our expert collaborators here and there too. And remember:
Women are incredible, Moms are limitless, and a sisterhood of moms is a FORCE OF NATURE.

Ep.2 Car Babies & Clarity with Mamistad Denver 21
Mom Chat with Mamistad
03/02/24 • 45 min
In this episode you'll meet Lara and Molly of Mamistad Denver 21. Theirs is the 21st Mamistad Group created in Denver. They were connected as first-time pregnant mamas back in 2019 and have done more than just share their new Mama journey together - they survived it during a major pandemic. Maybe that's why they're still so close today.
Their group is an inspiration for all mom's groups as they continue to support each other as their kiddos enter the elementary school years, and with more babies having joined the mix! They share some of their thoughts on why their group is so successful, and remind us that just showing up as your authentic self makes all the difference.
Molly is an has an amazing birth story to share too! I'm still blown away...
Lara is a certified professional coach and shares some great insights throughout the episode. You can see her website and learn more about her upcoming book here: https://larabuelow.com/.

Ep.18 Meet Advanced Certified Doula, Adriana Lozada
Mom Chat with Mamistad
09/17/24 • 48 min
Meet Adriana Lozada! She's an Advanced Certified Doula - there are only 57 advanced certified doulas in the world.
She's also an author, a postpartum educator and a child sleep consultant. And she was named one of CNN in Espanol, 20 Latin American leaders of the internet in 2000. She also hosts the acclaimed podcast BIRTHFUL- one of my favorite resources for everything, pregnancy birth and postpartum - alternating between interviews with perinatal professionals and birth stories with new parents.
She found her calling as a doula through her own birth journey almost 20 years ago when she realized that she didn't have the skills to navigate labor and delivery in a way that was empowering rather than traumatic. Her message now. It's about the physiology! We need to feel safe for labor to progress naturally so that we can support our physiology in a way that's going to make our birth easier, and more empowering.
Adriana believes in, and advocates for, the transformational power of giving birth. She’s gifted at helping others on their perinatal journeys, and brings her deep knowledge, practical expertise, curiosity, and respect for inclusivity into all aspects of her work. Adriana is an unabashed advocate for improving the perinatal health system for all - and a self-proclaimed, birth nerd. :)
