MARKEM, Guest Mix - MMP Radio, EP021
MMP Radio

Introducing Episode 021 of our weekly music podcast, Miami Music Partners Radio, featuring a special 1-hour set by this week's guest DJ, MARKEM.
MMP Radio is brought to you by the Miami Music Partners, Miami's premier organization for the production & promotion of Dance Music events. Follow us on Instagram @MiamiMusicPartners or visit us online at MiamiMusicPartners.com, to stay up to date on our latest special events, and podcast special guest mixes!
ARTIST, GUEST BIO. - MARKEM:
With releases on the likes of Ultra Records, Strictly Rhythm, Spinnin’ Records, Nervous Records, Stereo, Blanco Y Negro and Tiesto’s AFTR:HRS, performances at Nikki Beach, Club Space and Storyland Festival, and support from dance music titans Steve Angello, Ferry Corsten, Sunny James & Ryan Marciano, Fedde Le Grand and more, it’s safe to say Markem - previously known as Mark.M - is one of the most exciting young producer/DJs to rise through the South American ranks in a long time.
Born in Caracas, Venezuela but raised in Miami, Florida, at the tender age of just 15 Markem cut his teeth as a club promoter inside the city’s glittering nightlife. By 18, he’d progressed from the ticket office to the DJ booth, becoming one of Miami’s hottest resident DJs, including a regular slot at legendary venue Club Space where he regularly shared the decks with world-class heavyweights like Martinez Brothers, Steve Angello, Erick Morillo & Chus & Ceballos , to name just a few.
Unsurprisingly, it wasn’t long before the rising star was booked to perform further afield, with a tour diary that now takes in shows all over South America, North America and Europe. In the studio, Markem has proved to be equally as prolific. His very first production, the 2010 hit ‘Party In Miami’, spent three weeks in the Beatport Top 3, quickly establishing him as one to watch. Collaborations with David Tort and Moska, and remixes for Erick Morillo (‘I Like To Move It’) and Cedric Gervais & Mya (‘Love Is The Answer’) showed both his versatility and his natural ability to create huge house cuts.
In 2017, Dutch icon Tiesto signed Markem’s Tort collaboration ‘Strangers’ to his AFTR:HRS imprint - at the time of going to print, the single spent almost a year on the Beatport Top 100 and racked up over 8 million plays on Spotify alone. Markem has more new music to share with his growing army of fans, much of it coming via his own label HoTL Records. A creative project set up with long-time music partner David Tort, the imprint has swiftly come to stand for freedom of musical expression, not limited to style or trend but rather just focusing only on the belief that music is made to move the body. In their words, it’s a pure and simple commitment to “release whatever the fuck we want”. It really doesn’t get much more dance floor than that.

SPECIAL GUEST BIO. - ROGER SANCHEZ:
Just one in the cast of crucial producers who made Strictly Rhythm the premiere American house label during the early '90s, Roger Sanchez grew into a prolific remixer, world-class mainstream DJ, and top global-house name by the end of the decade. Though he concentrated more on mix albums than proper studio productions under his own name, Sanchez gained much respect with club kids as well as the dancefloor intelligentsia.
Born in New York to parents of Dominican heritage, Sanchez attended Manhattan's School of Art & Design with several future hip-hop legends including Kurtis Mantronik. He was well into the graffiti and break-dancing scene during the early '80s and began DJing by the age of 13. After mixing for several years at New York hot spots like the Tunnel -- even while he was studying architecture at the Pratt Institute -- Sanchez finally left college in 1987 to give music a full-time shot. His club Ego Trip was soon booming (with Sanchez mixtapes selling briskly on Broadway) and he never looked back. By 1989, Gladys Pizarro from Strictly Rhythm Records had touched base to see if Sanchez was interested in production; one year later, he had recorded his first single, "Luv Dancin," as Underground Solution.
The single's tough underground grooves charged the New York house scene, then just on the cusp of a turnover from the smooth garage sound to a rougher style influenced by European trance and techno. Despite stumbling into remixing by accident -- after giving a bad review to a single, he was tapped to rework it -- Sanchez became more than competent at the game, and beginning in 1991 he worked on tracks for Babyface, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Janet Jackson, Chic, M People, Basia, Incognito, and Soul II Soul.
Later Sanchez productions -- a 1994 Latin dub-house burner named "Sumba Lumba" (as Tribal Confusion), the following year's hard-hitting Strictly 4 the Underground EP (as Roger S), and that same year's "Release Yo Self" (as Transatlantic Soul) -- cemented his status as one of Strictly Rhythm's greatest assets and one of the world's leading mainstream producers. Though his own One Records collapsed in 1995, Sanchez formed another label named Narcotic and signed up with the British club Hard Times to release his first full-length. The mix LP Hard Times: The Album featured the S-Man (with just two decks, a mixer, and a crate of records) proving his worth as a DJ in addition to his much-hyped studio work. He continued in the mix-LP vein, releasing volumes in two high-profile series (Mixmag Live!, United DJ's of America), and the Freeze collection Roger S. Mega Mix. In 1997, Narcotic Records released "Back" (as S-Men), the fruits of the dance super-group formed by Sanchez, Junior Sanchez, and DJ Sneak. One year later, Sanchez released S-Man Classics, a two-disc collection including his best remixes backed with his best own productions. A few mix albums followed during the next three years, but...

ARTIST, GUEST BIO. - MEDNAS:
better known Mednas, is a DJ and producer originally from Casablanca, Morocco. He is the resident DJ of the Miami club, LIV. His track "Derby" with Nima Nesta was on the Beatport Top Ten chart and has been supported by EDM DJs such as Tiësto, Avicii, Erick Morillo, Roger Sanchez, Third Party, Junior Sanchez, and Morgan Page. His remix of Parker Ighile's "So Beautiful" with Henrix was supported by Nicki Minaj. Mednas specializes in tech house, progressive house and electro house.
Though clubs all over the world know him as Mednas, he wasn't always known by that name. He was born Mehdi Nassiri, facing the sea, in beautiful Casablanca, Morocco. Casablanca itself has always played an important role in popular culture. It became famous in the 1940s thanks to the Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman film of the same name. Throughout its history it had been the birthplace or home to many famous people - from film star Jean Reno to automobile designer Frank Stephenson to poet Abdallah Zrika.
Along the way Nassiri was practically destined to make it onto that last - it's just that nobody involved really knew it at the time.
Music had always been an important part of Nassiri's life, for as far back as he could remember. His mother spent time as a sound engineer for Moroccan Radio, among other jobs. He was even enrolled at an early age into a conservatory to learn the piano, but he didn't stay very long - something bigger awaited.

ARTIST, GUEST BIO. - WILL CLARKE:
An instantly recognizable DJ with his unique style and a one-of-a-kind beard, Will Clarke has solidified his place in dance music with hits like ‘Booty Percolatin’, ‘Techno (Not Techno)’ and a recent remix of Adam Beyer’s ‘Your Mind’, as well as releasing on a number of prominent labels including Truesoul, Abode, Relief, Drumcode, Sola, among many others.
Will’s impressive producer repertoire and distinctive sound of rollicking bass, low-slung funk and infectious hooks are all sounds that have caught the attention of industry top players Carl Cox, Adam Beyer, Jamie Jones, Maya Jane Coles, Patrick Topping, Camelphat, and Fisher. Nominated as the ‘Best Newcomer’ in 2016 for the annual DJ Awards in Ibiza, Will Clarke has additionally culminated two Billboard Dance chart #1s for his remixes of U2 and Rihanna.
Having toured across Japan, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and extensively in the US, Will Clarke has captivated audiences across the globe with his effortless performance style and flawless live sets. Closing out the year with two more EPs on We Are The Brave and TrueSoul, Will is gearing up to debut his own record label ‘All We Have Is Now’ in 2020. In support of the new project, Will Clarke is set to head out on a tour of exclusively open to close sets across North America. SPECIAL GUEST BIO. - COCODRILLS:
Where they're from or how they grew up is entirely irrelevant. When they started off and what their influences were are inconsequential. Listing the popular venues they've played or name dropping artist that support them would be disingenuous. This is because a short anecdotal paragraph loaded with DJ/producer cliches wouldn't do their style, or their sound, any justice. The Cocodrills (Christian "Pridef" Diaz, Adam Cruz) pride themselves on creating a unique musical experience, which can only be just that; experienced. But make sure to leave your pretense at the door 'cause you won't find any bs at one of their parties; only funky grooves, positive vibes and rampant debauchery. And while they don't claim to have reinvented the wheel, they do like to take that wheel down the road of sound for a ride so wild it wakes up the next morning with no tread smelling of burnt rubber and a wondrous sense of "let's do that again!". Act accordingly.

ARTIST, GUEST BIO. - JESSE PEREZ:
Jesse Perez is a larger than life character who doesn’t like to reveal too much about himself. Instead his big personality shines through in his music. Whether he was actually conceived in a motel in Little Havana, we do not know. Was his dad a pimp who was ten years younger than him? Probably not. But these are the stories he puts out there.Looking to his music gives more clues about his passions, at least: it is big stuff that is always characterized by a massive serving of bass. No doubt influenced by the bass music of his Miami homeland, he is very much part of a fresh and exciting crew of producers making bootylicious house music with ghetto rawness, percolating percussions and firing vocals that always send crowds wild.
His latest effort Fake on his own Mr Nice Guy Records is a big rubber banger with rapped vocals, dirty drums and the sort of attitude that will have dancers in raptures. Before now he has released on essential labels like Hot Creations, I’m A House Gangster, BPitch Control and Eats Everything’s Edible and his music always has a tongue in cheek charm and real sense of humor. It swings and is funky, touches on hip house and often comes stuffed with skewed synths that never fail to make their mark.Certainly one of the most prominent artists in the game right now, his bump and grind sounds are in demand all over the world, and for good reason.
