Missouri killer Maury Travis is better known as the Videotape Killer. His disturbing VHS collection was uncovered in a search of his home, along with plans to build a basement torture chamber. The killer's MO was to target primarily black sex workers, whose disappearances are less likely to be investigated. Travis died before he could be convicted, but is believed to have murdered around 17 women. His first victim, 33-year-old Alysa Greenwade, was found 21 years ago today.

Ten years after the release of the horror classic Scream, the film served as the disturbing inspiration for the gruesome murder of 16-year-old Cassie Jo Stoddart. Hired to house sit for family members, the teen was killed in a quiet country home in Pocatello, Idaho. Tucked away out of view from neighbors, Cassie's attackers saw her as the perfect target. Sixteen years ago this week, Cassie Jo Stoddart died in a scene straight out of a scary movie, at the hands of perpetrators who likened themselves to some of America's most infamous serial killers.

A lesser-known case that you'll be shocked you don't know about, the investigation into the Monster of Florence is the largest and most expensive in Italian history, spanning more than four decades. Getting his name from investigative journalist Mario Spezi, Il Mostro di Firenze preyed on couples in cars parked in known lovers' lanes in the 70s and 80s. Anyone and everyone came under suspicion, from priests to satanic cults (and every doctor, butcher, and pizza-maker in between!) Some even theorize that the Zodiac Killer and the Monster of Florence are one and the same. Many were investigated and a few people were even convicted in the case, though it is still widely believed to be unsolved to this day.

For Myra Hindley and Ian Brady, Manchester was their hunting grounds, and the moors -- a vast stretch of barren landscape -- was their dumping grounds. Britain's most reviled killers preyed on children, abducting and violently murdering their victims before leaving their bodies in shallow graves. Ordinarily, criminals of this scale would have been executed, but the death penalty was abolished in the UK just a month before the case went to trial. 56 years ago today, Brady and Hindley were sentenced to spend the entirety of their lives behind bars.

Country Boy Killer: Cody Legebokoff

Since the early 1970s, the area surrounding Canada's Highway of Tears has seen a number of mysterious disappearances and discoveries of human remains. It's difficult to estimate the number of victims who have fallen prey to murderers and serial killers who have made this corner of British Columbia their hunting grounds. RCMP officers doubt they will ever be able to solve all the cases connected with the highway, but there have been some convictions over the years -- including Brian Peter Arp, Edward Dennis Isaac, and Cody Legebokoff. Twelve years this week, the youngest killer on the list, Cody Legebokoff was apprehended. Targeting vulnerable women and dumping their bodies off rural roads and gravel pits, Legebokoff was ultimately convicted of four counts of first degree homicide.

The tiny town of Texarkana, which straddles the state line separating Texas from Arkansas, was tormented by a string of violent attacks in the 1940s. A mysterious assailant dubbed 'The Phantom Slayer' preyed upon young couples parked on lovers' lanes, sending Texarkana into a tailspin. Residents gripped by mass hysteria bought out all the door locks, window shades, and ammunition in town. By summer of 1946 the Phantom had faded away, but left an indelible mark on Texarkana as one of the earliest unsolved serial killer cases in America.

A Massacre in Medicine Hat: The Richardson Family Murders

In April of 2006, local authorities were called to the scene of a triple homicide in a family home on a quiet street in Medicine Hat, Alberta. When they realized the Richardson’s 12-year-old daughter was missing from the scene, police issued an Amber Alert. After uncovering some disturbing evidence, the girl quickly went from missing person to person of interest. Jasmine Richardson went down in history as Canada’s youngest convicted killer, and its Justice system’s biggest success story.

The Legend of Lake Bodom

In June of 1960, a scenic campsite overlooking Finland's Lake Bodom was the scene of a vicious multiple murder. Maila Bjorklund, Seppo Boisman, and Anja Maki were murdered as they slept in their tent. Their friend Nils Gustafsson survived, but with head injuries so severe that he lost all memory of the attack. Police pursued several probable suspects, Nils Gustafsson even coming under suspicion at one point. Investigators interviewed over 4000 witnesses, but without enough evidence for a conviction, the case has gone cold.
