MixedMedia Talks - Finding Truth in Theater with Lillith era
play

06/24/22 • 44 min

Lillith Era is a Sapphic actor, musician, dancer, poet, writer, and all-around performer of multiple disciplines. Based in the Bay Area, Lillith has close ties to San Francisco's American Conservatory Theatre and the Berkeley Playhouse. Most recently, Lillith could be seen in the West Coast premiere of Celine Song’s “Endlings” at the Oakland Theatre Project. Prior to "Endlings", Lillith has been seen on the stages of the San Francisco Playhouse, Theatre Rhinoceros, Mills College, and more. Outside of the theatre, Lillith can be found jamming out with her indie band "Kitchenette", scribbling poetry in her journal, or serenading her partner with Broadway's most dramatic ballads.
In this episode we explore beginnings, being a triple threat, and being wildly curious about all the tools of a performing artist's toolbox, the origins of theater for her, formal training vs, getting messy and finding out. Queer voices in theater, protecting ourselves as performers, emotionally and physically. We wander into collaboration, goals, and vulnerability, the nature of theater as a tool for propaganda vs. emotional truth, "truth", the ethics of which roles performing artists choose to take, and the responsibilities of, maybe not!
Cw: mentions of rape, at 30:00 to 31:00

MixedMedia Talks - Images of Future Memory with Annie Holland
play

05/16/22 • 55 min

In this episode, I speak with Photographer, ceramicist, digital artist and sculptor, Annie Holland, who for over twenty years has been photographing the wonderful, the absurd and beautiful images of people, places and their daily lives worldwide. she tends to venture down the road less travelled, and years ago ended up in Japan, where her passion for photography really began. After a few years working as a freelance photographer, she returned to Ireland and set up sher own studio in 2000. She shoots both stills and video in a clear composed style which can then be edited into short movies to further tell a story.
We discuss the place of image in documenting memories, of creating sustainable futures with Art across generations, drawing attention to and listening for what's worthwhile, dancing in the museums and the textures of art, close-up, working with empowering kids to ask for what they need, environmental hazards of music festivals, exploring what it means to value and support your creative vision with grants, professionalism, and other people's opinions, and the long memories of those whose stories need a voice, still. The work that never ends, and appreciation of what's rare or unnoticed.

Costello Darling identifies as a maker more than an artist and sees the ways things COULD be done. and questions the way 'Most People' do things is often unknown to him. They make things that he wants personally and that 'Most People' don't seem to know to want yet (because they don't exist) like a ukulele with the size and strings of a guitar. ** They make more traditional art around the given audience of a moment with the experience made as a reflection of that interaction. His focus is on performance art, and temporal art for the moment, about sharing experiences across many senses are some of the many ways he makes. Fashion: Man in layered skirts look/ DIY sleeves for listeners
Projects have included: * Food: DIY braised meat / DIY Mandala cake, * Burning Man Porta Pottie Beacons : Art FAIL, * Human Powered Trebuchet. * Burning Teeter Totter called The Hotter Totter, * Mask making before the CDC figured out airborne disease is spread through coughing,* Snow angel / Snow arm, *information tables in public spaces, and more.
In this episode, Costello and I explore expectations of what elements of daily life CAN be art, what role whimsy plays in making things, and tailoring art to the perceptions of the audience, the time, and place in which one finds it, why we do it, what's important when you're your own audience, and what is the art of the moment.
Costello Darling can be found on YouTube.com/CostelloReflections, and
Facebook/ social media platforms, and anywhere they happen to be.

MixedMedia Talks - Directing Political Theater with Paul Mason Barnes
play

07/05/22 • 61 min

Paul Mason Barnes is an accomplished theatre director specializing in Shakespeare (though he also directs musicals, classics, and new work). He is a teacher, and arts administrator (Artistic Director, Education Director, etc.). Most recently, he has also ventured into publishing with a memoir about his experience as a grassroots fundraiser for Pete Buttigieg's campaign for the 2020 Democratic Party presidential nomination and a member of his Arts Policy Advisory Committee (and later, Joe and Kamala's APAC), "Paul for Pete: Politics. Theatre. Art. One Man's Adventures (or, How I Became a Septuagenarian Fanboy)" has just been released and is experiencing brisk sales and a third Printing. (Wahoo!) visit the website PaulForPete.com for updates on the audio book release.
In this episode we discuss, Rhythms of Shakespeare, What activism inspires art, and transforms despair into something powerful, the process of utilizing his experience as a freelance director, finding new ways to interpret favorite plays, surprises in finding himself with a seat at the political table re: art, and the role of arts in a hopeful future. Supporting independent bookstores, and lifting other artists up. We finish out the conversation with my favorite question: What muppet or combination of muppets would you be?
"I can say unequivocally and without hesitation that "The Muppets" is one of the best available antidotes for depression I know. Sometimes I feel like one of those two cranky guys in the box seats; other times, like Miss Piggy (we have a Miss Piggy Christmas tree ornament that has a special place on our hearth; comes out every year). I admire Kermit for his openness, sensitivity, and curiosity . . . beyond that, I'm hard pressed to comment.

MixedMedia Talks - Mapping Place and Time with LisaRuth Elliott
play

01/28/23 • 60 min

LisaRuth Elliott is a visual artist using found material to create her paper collages. She is also a fiber artist, weaver, experimenter of plant dyes on textiles, and public muralist. Inspired by beauty in the textures and patterns around her and what has been cast aside, she transforms the banal into new and dynamic combinations showcasing human occupation. She is prompted by the stories and landscape of San Francisco, of Yelamu and its creatures, as she learns about and stewards unceded Ramaytush Ohlone land as an urban farmer and is deeply interested in the exploration and understanding of place. It infuses all of her work, from being a public historian to creating art.
In this episode we discuss what's unique in the landscapes that offer gifts of materials for creative composition, both found and grown. We also discuss seasonality and sustainability of native plant materials in landscapes, and the fact that tracking changes through time is a part of the process, listening to the materials, and having conversations through abstract/ non-representational art.
