Mission History will travel through world history to bring you stories of legendary military leaders, epic campaigns, and secret missions that remained hidden for years: from Alexander the Great to Xerxes to Ghengis Khan; from Julius Caesar to William Wallace to Geronimo; from the Trojan War to the Viking raids to the American Revolution, and beyond. In season one, we begin with a story of timely importance. It’s the story of the armies who fought in the American Revolutionary War... because in 2022 the Camden Battlefields' caretakers were forced to make a rare and difficult decision. They needed to safeguard the resting places of those valiant soldiers whose very graves were in jeopardy of being destroyed. Hear from the men and women who rescued the remains of the fallen heroes and experience the historic event in April 2023 of the reburial ceremonies. But before that, Mission History will transport you to America in the 1770s and 80s through vivid stories of top generals, fearless battlefield commanders, and the valiant men and women who stood on the front lines. With the main force of the British southern army in Virginia, the American southern army reestablishes control of nearly all of South Carolina and Georgia. At the same time, American Commander-In-Chief George Washington, and his French allies, recognize an opportunity. They rush the American main army to Virginia in a winner-take-all gamble to win the war. The Americans emerge victorious after the siege of Yorktown, and they turn the dream of a new nation into a reality.

A new American commander arrives in the South to lead the reconstructed Continental army. But as the bulk of the southern army regroups and plans a new strategy, a force of rugged frontiersmen from the Appalachian Mountains win a stunning victory. The Battle of Kings Mountain turns the tide of the war, though the combatants will only realize it over the course of time. Meanwhile, in the North, an American military hero, Benedict Arnold, becomes increasingly disenfranchised. He makes a deal with the British and begins a secret campaign to undermine American defenses. When his treachery is discovered, he switches sides and leads British troops in battle against his former countrymen.

We’ll follow the path of the American Revolutionary War with a focus on two units, one from America and one from Scotland, who fought in nearly every major engagement. We’ll trace the experiences of the generals, the battlefield commanders, and the men and women on the front lines. From the cities of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia to the fields and swamps of the Carolinas and Georgia, you’ll hear the story of the birth of a new nation from a new perspective.

We’ll take you to a battlefield in Camden, South Carolina to hear from the veterans, archeologists, and forensics teams who rescued the remains of 14 soldiers from shallow graves that were in jeopardy of being destroyed. And we’ll end with the emotional, once-in-a-lifetime event that brought together dignitaries and soldiers from four nations to honor the fallen.

When British troops exchange gunfire with colonial militiamen at Lexington and Concord, an unofficial war begins. Colonial fighters lay siege to Boston and face their real test against British regular soldiers at the Battle of Bunker Hill.

In the fall of 2022, archeologists and forensic anthropologists undertook a rare project to excavate the graves of a limited number of soldiers who fell in the Battle of Camden on August 16, 1780. The graves had been harmed by years of industry and had been targeted by relic hunters. Leaders of the Camden Burials Project made the difficult choice to remove the remains of the soldiers and rebury them to keep them safe and secure. Little did the leaders know, they were in for several surprises along the way.
