Mishka Shubaly Podcast

Mishka Shubaly Podcast

Mishka Shubaly

The prolonged isolation of COVID has taught me that I really have some incredible friends: novelists, memoirists, poets, musicians, songwriters, comedians, painters and so on. Also, I am terrible at keeping in touch with them. These conversations will be part catch-up with my friends (some of whom I haven’t spoken to in years) about our addictions and/or sobriety, our mental health struggles, and the challenges of the creative life. And these will be in-depth explorations of their work, how they work, what inspires them, and what’s coming next. Yes, I’m a writer and musician, but I’m a fan first. These are artists and people I love, and it’s my honor to share them with you. Mishka Shubaly Podcast - Big Badger Energy with Rich Wilson
play

04/15/22 • 73 min

I honestly don't know what's wrong with Rich Wilson. By which I mean that he is a joyous artist and, having fallen prey to the trope of the "tortured artist" so many times in my life, I find his persistent good cheer hard to understand. I also feel an incredibly deep kinship with this man on the other side of the ocean who I think I've actually only hung out with in person twice. Rich's podcast, Insane in the Men Brain is brilliant enough that I consider it canon for my own podcast, by which I mean that I intend to rip it off as mercilessly as possible. As soon as I broke down and finally decided to do this silly thing, I knew I had to get Rich on as one of my first guests.

Rich Wilson is a multi award winning comedian and podcast host. For the first 10 years of
his comedy career, Rich cut his comedic teeth at all of the UK’s major comedy clubs and has
remained a steadfast presence on the British comedy circuit ever since. This has taken him
around the world, culminating in multi award winning, sell out shows at the biggest comedy
festivals such as Melbourne, Perth and New Zealand. In 2017 Rich won “Best International
Act” at the New Zealand Comedy Festival and was nominated for the same award the
following year. In 2019 he won another comedy award for “Best show of the Festival” with
Just Be Botanicals at the Edinburgh Fringe festival.

Rich Wilson is a multi award winning
comedian and podcast host of Insane In The Men Brain and Insane In The Fem Brain where
he talks to funny and interesting people about their experiences with mental health featuring
interviews with Heston Blumenthal, Felicity Hayward, Nicholas Pinnock, Michael Smiley,
Jessica Fostekew, Scroobius Pip and many more. He has earned himself an award for “Best
Podcast” with JOE and gained a nomination for “Best Social Conscience Podcast” at the
Podbible Poll Winners Awards. Rich is also an indemand podcast guest and has been
featured on: BBC Radio 4’s You’ll Do, Global Radio’s Job’s A Goodun, Scroobius Pip’s
Distraction Pieces and Dave’s Conversations Against Living Miserably.

I met Renee Watt briefly at a storytelling event in Phoenix with my great friend Andy Baker. Then we adjourned to a gay strip club and talked about DMT and multiverses and shapeshifting, as one does. I *officially* don't believe in, well, basically anything she does (astrology/ horoscopes/ psychic readings/ tarot) but when I was down the well last summer, I was desperate enough to feel better that I sought out her help. Surprise, surprise, my hour long tarot reading with her was incredibly helpful and I knew when I finally got this podcast off the ground that she would have to be one of the first guests.

Renee Watt got her first tarot deck at 10 years old, when a family friend exposed her to the practice. Not long after, she stumbled upon the occult section at a used book store, which catapulted her into the vast world of witchcraft and esoteric practices. Since then, she’s built a career from the mystical information she collected over the years, working as a professional writer, teacher, psychic, witch, and astrologer. Her words can be found at Astrology.com, Horoscope.com, Paranormality Magazine, The Newsette, and Shondaland.com. Renee’s astrological and spiritual expertise has been featured in Vogue, Cosmopolitan, InStyle, Bust, Coast to Coast with George Noory, and many more! You can find her on Instagram @RainbowGlitterStar, and in podcast land, by checking out her projects “Witch Doctorate” and “The Glitter Cast.” For more information on her practice, be sure to visit RainbowGlitterStar.com .

Today I caught up with my grief buddy, Sari Beliak. We yuk it up about her book deal going south, her getting hit by a car, her father's death last year, loss, fury and weeping behind the wheel. Honestly, I swear, you need this conversation. Things aren't always as dark as they seem.

Sari Beliak is a writer and comedian from Phoenix, AZ. She is a senior contributing writer for The Onion and a regular contributor to sites like The Hard Times and Reductress. She was a finalist for NBC's Late Night Writer's Workshop in 2020 which was an otherwise totally normal and chill year. Please follow her on Twitter at @thecrassceiling

Derek Sheen is a cuddly mess of insecurities and a stand-up comedian from Seattle. He has released four albums on Stand Up! Records, most recently 2020's Macho Caballero. Reviewer Richard Lanoie of The Serious Comedy Site said that Sheen "more than proves there are still some great, original, and intelligently dark comics out there. Drew Hunt of the Chicago Reader noted that Sheen's comedy can be "highly personal or emotionally transparent" and compared him to Brian Posehn for his "delivery and lucid, streetwise worldview”. Sheen wanted to be a comic from an early age. In third grade, he recited an entire George Carlin album side for show-and-tell. He first performed standup at nine, and at an open mic at 13. He played music professionally for 15 years before returning to standup at age 35. His comedy often touches on personal topics such as his depression and alcoholism. A gifted, one of a kind storyteller, Sheen has become a secret favorite among comedy fans across the globe. He has a gift for mining the dark depths of the human condition and excavating interesting and very personal stories, filled with shocks, laughter and hope. He is also a hopeless and gigantic idiot. Catch Derek performing in my Sideyard on Nov 18th!
