Minority Korner - MK257: Democratic National Convention 2020
play

08/25/20 • 87 min

On a special episode of Minority Korner our very own political analyst, Ben Randle, joins us to debrief this historic Democratic National Convention as we swing into the general election. We provide our key takeaways, our highlights, our thoughts on republicans speaking, and who inspired us. Was there behind the scenes Democrat drama- or just something the media made up. We have our calls to action, strategies for moving forward, how to deal with white cynicism, and how to jump into the arena as the stakes couldn't be higher- this could be our endgame.

The DNC just wrapped, and we are going to take a beat, and circle back to that next. So this week, we're going to have a little fun, Moury is here and we are going to dive into three shows that are tapping into the cultural Zeitgeist that we have devoured during the Pandemic: The Wire which has been eye-opening in understanding underserved communities and issues surrounding policing systems, West World Season 3 and what it means to be human, and The Old Guard which as us feeling seen as they are including diverse folks in their action storytelling and breaking ground and passing the Vito Russo Test for Queer representation. Moury takes us through a deep dive into the systemic mistreatment of Black folks in the medical industry, where that comes from, and why it still persists today.

Nnekay is still here, she's still in New York! James is showing her the sights! World Trade Center Monument, The High Line, The Stonewall Inn, a... bone... mall? Also James is excited to share his mutant power, which might not get him accepted into Professor X's institute. Did you know Madonna dated Tupac? The wonder twins discuss. Did you know that DeMario Jackson (from Bachelor in Paradise) asked Britney Spears out? James got to experience the fabulous Phylicia Rashad... sleep for most of the play? In James's Korner, we're discussing a tough topic (Trigger Warning). With the recent suicide of Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, James dives into one of the causes he was incredibly vocal about: Child Molestation. James breaks down some of the statistics from the website Darkness to Light, to squash a lot of the misconceptions that are spread. Also, James shares some tactics on how to protect those children that surround us. Next up! We try something new with a Super Soul Sunday. With all the intense conversations and whirlwind recording, we take a page from Oprah's book and discuss self worth, shared histories, race, and gentrification.

We are going back to high school with James' old high school prom date Leah E. who's in the guest co-host chair, and who coincidentally help coin the title of this very show back when "Minority Corner" was spelled with a "C". We talk about the HBO NIXIM documentary The Vow, and our personal connection to the cult, and James' near-miss with getting sucked into it, and how the doc has shown how Qanon and Agent Orange's following are they themselves: cults. HBO is on a roll with its other documentary 537 about the 2000 Election showing the importance of voting and the shenanigans of Republicans. We sit down for the Minority Korner book club as James takes us through a deep dive into Angela Davis’ Are Prisons Obsolete? Hmmm .... we will probably have an answer to the question the book proposes by episodes end. Then Leah aides us in our never-ending journey of decolonization this time turning our attention to our food! Nothing is safe ya’ll we’ve been fed lies... literally.

It's a Maximum Fun crossover event with Renne Colvert of podcast Can I Pet Your Dog! Does this make the show Can I Pet Your Korner? Renee is just the person we need to brighten up our worlds and bring in the light as we kick off this holiday season and put 2020 to rest. Both Renee and James have finally checked out a bit of the Saved By the Bell Reboot- it's better than it needs to be! Melissa McCarthy makes a costly mistake but shows HOW to come correct with an apology. On the heels of Kristen Stewart and Viggo Mortensen's comments about playing queer or straight characters, is it a slippery slope in not allowing straight actors to play queer characters? Does this pigeon hold queer actors in only getting to play queer roles? In the main korners, we continue to bear witness to the atrocious history and acts committed against Indigenous Peoples, as we examine the centuries-long practice of Indian Boarding Schools, and it might be time to rebrand and rethink Thanksgiving. Renee gives us the inspiration we need in celebrating the legacy and continued awesomeness that is Debbie Allen.

Guest Co-Host: Renee Colvert (she/her) is a self-proclaimed “man of the wilderness”, the emergency contact to her dog Tugboat, a podcaster, and James Aurther M’s NUMBER ONE FAN! IG: @reneescolvert @tugboatthefluffypit

One of James’ ol High School Prom dates is back: Leah Edun and she’s been busy since the last time she was on the show: she had a baby and they talk about the realities of parental leave, or lack thereof in the US. But first... The R.Kelly trial.. It’s happening. And it is a lot. Flipping the script, HBO’s The White Lotus starts a really great conversation around race, it really only scratches the surface - does white hubris in the writers room strike again? Netflix’s Pray Away documentary dives into the history, and truth around conversion therapy how it sky rocketed, the queer people who started it, and the horrifying facts around it, and how it has rebranded today.

Guest Co-Host: Leah E. (she/her) a digital marketer, hot sauce enthusiast, traveler, obscure fact seeker, and comedy admirer.

Nnekay is in NEW YORK!!! Any every street is her runway! Once Nnekay got off her jalopy of a plane (after being tortured by children and Tom Ford), James has shown her THE. TOWN. But before we get to that, we cover how the American AssClown sent out tweets banning the trans community from the military, Nnekay and James discuss. In Nnekay's Korner, she gives us the direct opposite of Dunkirk, and examines how American Black GIs were treated and existed in the UK during WWII. The results might be SURPRISING. In James' Korner he starts an open conversation regarding the proposed new HBO show, Confederates. What in the hell are Game of Thrones showrunners, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss THINKING by making a show imagining a world where the South succeeded in secession. Closing out the show, Nnekay and James discuss the new movie obsession- KIDNAP starring our Hollywood QUEEN Halle Berry. You know they're gonna break down that trailer.
