Men of Words Podcast

Men of Words

Welcome to the Men of Words Podcast! This is a platform for conversation with successful people about Mental Health. Our aim is to speak to males at the top of their fields across sport, business, music and anything in between to hear stories of adversity, failure, success and the Mental Health journey throughout. Opening up about these issues is historically not our strong-suit as males and that is the area we are hoping to have some affect. Liam (Murph) and Michael (Muff) are long time friends with intersecting journeys through the highs and lows of Mental Health, having had personal and professional relationships for years and many conversations like the ones we are choosing to have with these elite performers. Our goal is a simple one. If we can motivate someone to have a conversation about their mental health, be it with friends, family or a professional, then we have achieved our goal. Thanks so much for listening, for any questions or queries please contact us through Instagram @menofwordspodcast or email us at [email protected] If you need support, it's there. Talk to a friend, family, your GP or call Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Mini number 7. The last one before big life changes, start of AFL seasons so it was nice to find an hour for us to put it in neutral and catch up.
If we haven't recommended this before, then we can't say enough how much it's worth to have conversations like this. Just to put the tools down, focus on a meaningful conversation with people you trust is so valuable.
It's not lost on us how lucky we are to have each other to talk to, we hope that it inspires people to do the same.
Enjoy! MoW.

Our chat today is with Danny Kennedy. Danny is a fitness trainer and coach, he has built himself a very successful life & business and has helped so many people do the same - from people like us all the way through elite athletes.
Danny goes into what is effectively his belief system in this chat and we really get the chance to see why so many people look to him for guidance and inspiration in achieving their goals. He shows a great understanding of Mental Health and the mind-body connection that we know is so important in being a healthy person. Healthy mind makes a healthy body and vice versa!
We want to say a huge thank you to Danny for joining us and please enjoy this conversation!

Our chat today is a special one. A chance to catch up with each other during this Mental Health Awareness month and we reflect on the 2 week journal challenge.
It is so nice to hear the introspection Murph got from the journalling, even if he didn't make it the 2 weeks straight and to be honest it doesn't matter. To come out the other end and be more understanding and have grown a little make's it all worth it.

Continuing our chats with people in the philanthropic world... Aiden Clarke is the founder of Posisocks. They are spreading positivity one pair of socks at a time and not only are we all about the mission, we are also in the socks!
Aiden joined us for a conversation and true to the mission of Posisocks, he brought his honesty and positive self into the studio and oh boy are we grateful for it. Nothing like a fresh pair of socks... Enjoy!

Today's chat is all about Dads. Fitting, as Murph is on his way into Fatherhood with a baby on the way and Muff is going for round 2, both of whom are due very close together next year! Stocks' insights through his close friends and role models at the Saints is also part of the chat & it was nice to hear his thoughts and where he sees himself when the time comes.
Exciting times and a nice conversation to have between all the fellas, enjoy!

Todays conversation is with meditation & mindfulness teacher, coach and founder of Mind Maverick - Janoah Van Kekem.
What a chat! Janoah provides us with non stop wisdom and gives a great re-telling of how he found his way to the mindfulness space. This served as a great check-in for myself and I know that people will get a lot from this one.
Huge thanks to Janoah! We recommend going to give him a follow @janoahvankekem
Please enjoy the conversation with Janoah Van Kekem.

Josh Pyke. Oh boy.
When we started the podcast, we made a list of dream chats. This was one that was on there and we are stoked to have. He's had a bit on the last few years...

  • Launched to fame around 2007 with Memories & Dust, followed by Chimney’s Afire
  • 5 ARIA wins, 18 ARIA nominations, multiple Gold/Platinum accreditations.
  • Multiple Triple J Hottest 100 entries.
  • Run songwriting sessions with Indigenous communities (Indigenous Literacy Foundation)
  • Raised over $50,000 through Busking For Change events.
  • Incredibly influential advocate for creators. Represented musicians in national forums such as Parliament House roundtables, Q+A, and The Project, on key issues including copyright reform, Arts funding, and more recently, the impact of COVID-19 on the creative industries
  • Josh Pyke Partnership - offering a mentorship and funding to an unsigned musician
  • Acclaimed children’s book author - Lights Out Leonard, A Banana is a Banana, The Incredible Runaway Snot, Chatterpuss.
  • New album - To Find Happiness recently released and is a deeply personal album.

Josh's lived experience and struggles with anxiety is something he can be really open and honest about and that's good for everyone to do. We are so grateful for him joining us and please enjoy the conversation!

Australian Comedian representing us in the US... Monty Franklin joined us for a chat on his recent stand-up tour of Australia.
Monty (no surprises) is a funny fella! Not to mention he is sitting on the script of the century, making a movie called the Great Emu War with comedy legends in Australia next year!
Monty can speak to the grind of making a career out of comedy and the value in being a good bloke. There is no longevity in being a bad person as he will tell us about.
Big thanks to Monty for a chat, can't wait to see his work on the big screen, please enjoy our chat!

Our 1st Women of Words chat for the year is a winner - we chat with Lola Berry!
Lola is an author, nutritionist, TV presenter, actor, yoga instructor and host her own podcast Fearlessly Failing - which if you enjoy the Men and Women of Words pods you'll LOVE it!
Lola has that thing... Liam and I both were feeling a little flat going into this chat but she has that way about her that she brings the people around her up and fills them up with positivity. It worked on us!!
Fearlessly Failing is also her latest book to be released and it's a great read. We recommend finding Lola's work any which way you can and please enjoy our conversation with Lola Berry.

Men of Words Podcast - Matthew Murphy (The Wombats, Love Fame Tragedy)
play

05/14/24 • 48 min

Got a question? Text us here and we’ll respond next ep! Mow.

Todays chat is with Mr. Matthew Murphy or Murph as he has lovingly been known here in Australia for many years. He is the leader of the enormously successful and incredible band the Wombats and as a part of his side project, Love Fame Tragedy is making even more music if you can believe it!!
Murph is in LA so we joined him via Zoom as a throwback and it was head first into all things Mental Health. He is 19 months into sobriety, a father of 2, working prolifically and doing the work on himself. So open about all of it and we are very grateful for the conversation. Enjoy!
CW: This episode speaks about the devastating issues of gendered violence in Australia and may be triggering for some people to hear. Support services are available and we encourage anyone to speak out when they feel they can't.
