Melinda Chats - Matt Edge: Chronic Pain and Moving Forward
play

04/08/21 • 34 min

Matt’s primary goal for clients is to help them find a sense of purpose and meaning that allows them to continue on, even if the pain or illness does not go away. Chronic pain and illness can also take away aspects of life that may previously have been significant. Whether that be losing the ability to play a sport, losing the capability to work a job, or not being able to do things such as hold a child or grandchild, there is a sense of grief and loss that can come with significant injury or illness. Learning to adapt to these new changes is a process that no one should have to go through alone, and Matt seeks to make sure everyone has a safe space to process and grieve that loss. Finally, people who struggle with anger are often viewed as bad people, but anger can lead to broken relationships, feeling misunderstood and helpless, and ultimately feeling isolated and alone. Helping those who are struggling with managing their anger to learn how to properly express themselves in a healthy and constructive way is another passion for Matt. Although a lot has changed since first setting his goal, Matt still strives to make each person he interacts with just a little bit happier!

Her second book, Stories from the Polycule (2015), is an edited anthology of writings by polyamorous folks. When Someone You Love is Polyamorous (2016) is Sheff’s shortest book that guides family members and significant others who are trying to understand a polyamorous loved one. Children in Polyamorous Families (2020) is Dr. Eli’s newest book, a short summary of her findings on children to date. Sheff blogs for Psychology Today at The Polyamorists Next Door. In collaboration with three colleagues, Dr. Eli developed the Bonding Project, a test people can take to explore their preferred bonding styles.
