Dr. Urton served in the US Navy as a Nurse Corps Officer, retiring with 22 years of service at the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He received his BSN from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his MSN and DNP from East Carolina University. Mike has been a medical-surgical nurse for nearly 25 years, working in a variety of inpatient, procedural and ambulatory clinical settings and holding various clinical and leadership roles in hospitals across the United States. Over his career, he has developed a a passion for patient safety (especially falls prevention) and for acute & chronic pain management. She has been working in the health care industry for almost 12 years, and started her nursing career as a med-surg bedside nurse on an Ortho, Trauma, and Surgical Specialty Unit. It was through that experience in the med-surg unit where she discovered a passion for education, and pursued a master’s degree. She is a lifelong learner, and loves to teach. Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, she's not all work, and definitely enjoys play! She loves to travel, and tries to plan as many vacations each year as she can with family and friends. Alissa loves to read, listen to podcasts, and geek out to documentaries and crime shows on the weekends. She's a total fair weather fan when it comes to Utes Football, but will cheer in all the right places, or get mad when her husband tells her to during a game. Evie Harris, BSN, MA, RN, FNE lives and works in Baltimore, MD and has been an RN for 4 years, and is also a Forensic Nurse Examiner. She works on a busy med-surg unit in the roles of staff RN, Charge RN, unit education council representative, & preceptor. Evie has previous careers in management, teaching, & on-air radio co-producer/co-host. Her future career goals include nurse management & nurse administration, as well as nursing entrepreneurial endeavors. Dr. Jacinda Bunch, PhD, RN is an Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa College of Nursing, where she received her PhD in nursing with a focus on healthcare systems, organizational culture, and team dynamics. Her research explores ways in which culture, context, mechanisms, and relationships impact patient safety programs, specifically Rapid Response Systems. Dr. Bunch currently teaches courses focusing on leadership, quality improvement, professional engagement, patient safety, health systems, nursing administration, and intraprofessional communication/teamwork for undergraduate and graduate nursing students.
Dr. Frank Overdyk, MD is an engineer and semi-retired Professor of Anesthesia from Charleston, South Carolina. His academic interest is mechanisms of respiratory depression from opioids and his passion is reducing preventable harm from opioids in ward patients. He has published extensively on these topics, is a consultant to medical technology companies, and is active in patient safety organizations and promoting surveillance monitoring on the ward.
