Mean Book Club - 12 Rules for Life by Jordan Peterson
play

08/30/22 • 98 min

This one’s for our Canadian fans! Michelle Boucher says this alt-right psychologist “promoted an all-meat diet, said he was awake for a month straight” and is basically a sexist monster! Although TECHNICALLY not a NYT bestseller because it was only published in Canada, this book looked too juicy to not discuss. Turns out it’s horrible in more ways than one!

Here’s an article explaining why we made the exception to the NYT bestseller rule for this book:

You can thank MBC fan Alessandra Rosso for this rec: “I read this book a year ago and still talk about how bad it is... And the men... feel like giant Ken dolls for the women to transport, pose and pretend to interact with.” Plus, it’s a NYT bestseller set in NYC during 9/11? Uh, count us in!

This week we read Flowers In The Attic by V.C. Andrews with our special guest, Sean O’Reilly (Comedy Commons)! This 1979 gothic family saga made the NYT bestseller list upon release and then again in 1988, when the movie adaption was released. There was also a 2014 Lifetime adaption starring Kiernan Shipka, Ellen Burstyn and Heather Graham! So it must be good, right? Wrong.

It's our season 17 finale!!!!
Huge thank you to our listener Hayden for recommending this lil hellscape to us!
Hayden said: "My manager just told me that in order to start my “roadmap” to a promotion we are going to start by reading a book on leadership." INTERESTING...
Will Hayden get the big promotion?
Will Jocko and Leif INDEED dive even deeper into the unchartered and complex waters of a concept first introduced in Extreme Ownership to get granular into the nuances that every successful leader must navigate??
Will the ladies of MBC die of boredom???
FIND OUT!

Mean Book Club - Supermarket by Logic with Joey Price
play

11/14/23 • 82 min

Thank you to our Icelandic listener Jessic Lyn Webb who told us that this NYT bestseller was “truly the most heinous misjustice to storytelling I have every had the pain of reading,” and included lots of borderline harmful takes on mental illness. And for some reason, that sold us. Heaven knows why. This one was painful.
We also have special guest - comedian and cohost of The Beanball podcast Joey Price!

Waddup, book nerds! Welcome back for Season 5. This week we read Bridget Jones' Diary by Helen Fielding. Already a success in the UK, this book sat high on The New York Times Bestseller List when it was released in 2008. The Guardian newspaper named Bridget Jones’s Diary one of the ten novels that best defined the 20th century. It spawned a book series and three motion pictures starring Renée Zellweger. But WHY? We break it down.

Mean Book Club - Happy Place by Emily Henry
play

03/12/24 • 99 min

We're BAAAACCCCCKKK! And this week we read NYT 2023 bestseller Happy Place by Emily Henry. A bunch of words so generic we kept forgetting what we were supposed to be reading. Thanks to Emily Fidago (listener, friend of the pod) for suggesting it, saying "this is the perfect Mean Book Club book because it is absolutely intolerable... my fury propelled me to the end of the book." That's good enough for us!
