Cardiothoracic Surgery in Kenya, East Africa
This is a special episode as I feature Dr. Keith Dindi who is a pioneer, a champion and just a truly inspiring Cardiothoracic surgeon who decided to stay in his home country of Kenya to provide life saving cardiac surgeries! Dr. Dindi speaks about his up-bringing and his journey from a small village in the western part of Kenya near the Ugandan border to his fellowship training in Australia. He also discusses the current state of Cardiothoracic surgery including the effect of Rheumatic heart disease and the shortage of CT surgeons in Kenya.
Rheumatic heart disease is a condition in which the heart valves have been permanently damaged by rheumatic fever. The heart valve damage may start shortly after untreated or under-treated streptococcal infection such as strep throat or scarlet fever. An immune response causes an inflammatory condition in the body which can result in on-going valve damage.

Mitral valve regurgitation and the latest advances of Mitral transcatheter techniques such as TEER (Transcatheter edge- to- edge repair) with Dr. Jyothy Puthumana
Join me on my podcast as I feature Dr. Jyothi Puthumana who is the Director of Interventional Echocardiography at the Bluhm Cardiovascular Institute at Northwestern Medical Center in Chicago, IL. He is also Professor of Medicine with the Feinberg School of Medicine. He discusses his unique journey from his early days growing up on a coffee plantation in Southern India to how he made it to his current position as Director of Interventional Echocardiography! He discusses in detail what is mitral regurgitation and explains the latest in mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (TEER) which is a minimally invasive procedure that treats mitral valve regurgitation.
TEER approximates the anterior and posterior mitral valve leaflets by grasping them with a clipping device in an approach similar to a treatment developed in cardiac surgery called the Alfieri stich but is much less invasive.
