Listen to Today's Devotion

Jesus’ earthly father is a small-town carpenter who lives in Nazareth. Now why Joseph? A major part of the answer lies in his reputation, and he gives it up for Jesus. Nazareth viewed Joseph as we might view an elder, deacon, or Bible class teacher. Now what? His fiancée is blemished, tainted; he is righteous, godly. The law says stone her. Love says forgive her. And Joseph is caught in the middle.

Then comes the angel’s announcement: she carries the Son of God in her womb. But who would believe it? Joseph makes his decision. “Joseph...took to him his wife, and did not know her until she had brought forth her firstborn Son” (Matthew 1:24-25 NKJV). He swapped his Torah studies for a pregnant fiancée and an illegitimate son and made the big decision of discipleship. He placed God’s plan ahead of his own.

Listen to Today's Devotion

The rapture of the Christians sounds fantastical. Yet, before you write it off, remember this is how God works. Did he not flood the earth? Did he not turn the Red Sea into a red carpet so the Hebrews could escape bondage?

God is the God of divine interruptions. Holy surprises. Who could have imagined God living on earth? But he came. Who could’ve imagined God hanging on a cross? But he died. Who could have imagined the empty tomb? But he rose from the dead. He intervenes in mighty and miraculous ways. He has before. He will again.

In the meantime keep an eye toward the sky, and live in such a way that Christ will find you faithfully looking for him. “Always be ready, because you don’t know the day your Lord will come” (Matthew 24:42 NCV).

Listen to Today's Devotion

Maybe your life resembles a Bethlehem stable. Crude in some spots, smelly in others. Not much glamour. You do your best to make the best of it. But try as you might, the roof still leaks, and the winter wind still sneaks through the holes you just can’t seem to fix. You’ve shivered through your share of cold nights, and you wonder if God has a place for a person like you.

Find your answers in the Bethlehem stable. The story of Christmas is the story of God’s relentless love for us. The moment Mary touched God’s face is the moment God made his case: there is no place he will not go. No place is too common, no person is too hardened, no distance is too far. There is no person he cannot reach. There is no limit to his love.

Max Lucado Daily Devotional - God’s Word over Worry

God’s Word over Worry

Listen to Today's Devotion

Fretting over tomorrow’s problems siphons the strength you need for today, leaving you anemic and weak. So when you can’t sleep, don’t count sheep; read Scripture.

Worry takes a look at catastrophes and groans, “It’s all coming unraveled.” But God says in Romans 8:28 (MSG), “Every detail in our lives of love for God is worked into something good.” Worry claims, “The world has gone crazy,” but God’s Word disagrees. Mark 7:37 (MSG) says, “Jesus has done it all and done it well.” Worry wonders if anyone is in control, but God’s Word calls God “the blessed controller of all things” (1 Timothy 6:15 Phillips). Worry whispers this lie: “God doesn’t know what I need.” But God’s Word declares in Philippians 4:19 (MSG), “God will take care of everything you need.”

Worry never sleeps, but God’s children do!
