In this special guest episode, we talk to the winners of the Build the [Im]Possible competition. The competition was to design structures that would not be possible without our revolutionary SPIDER and PILLAR connectors. The response from the four corners of the world was incredible: all kinds of projects came in and it was not easy for us to select the best ones. The categories of participation were Students and Professionals, and both gave us great satisfaction. The technical jury that selected the four finalist projects included a number of leading figures from the world of timber construction: Roland Maderebner, Senior Scientist at the Leopold-Franzens University of Innsbruck (A); Hermann Kaufmann, manager and founder of HK Architekten and professor emeritus of design and timber construction at the Technical University of Munich (D); Thomas Moosbrugger, member of national and international standardisation committees for timber construction and timber products; Peter Lang, partner at Rothoblaas, creator of the competition and expert in the field of Mass Timber constructions; and, last but not least, Ernesto Callegari, Product Line Manager at Rothoblaas, a structural engineer who is part of the company's Technical Office fastener development team. The judges are familiar with timber construction and spend much of their time imagining and shaping its future. Following the selection of the four finalists, participants in the Mass Timber Seminar in November submitted their votes and the two winning projects were crowned. Among the students, Tyler Hull, a young researcher from the University of Waterloo, Canada, won first prize. The prize in the "Professionals" category went to the Austrian RWT PLUS studio, already well-known in the industry for its design and construction of one of the world's tallest timber buildings, the HoHo in Vienna. We speak with Matthias Rinnhofer. Please enjoy this very special guest episode of the podcast and congratulations to the winners in both categories.

In this very special guest episode, Hannes Blaas, Patricio Gómez-Salas Ramírez & Milos Slavik representing proud sponsors of the podcast Rothoblaas, talk about the way their organisation meets the challenges of working in a global sector, yet has a focus on the needs and respects the nuances of local markets.
We speak about the challenges of establishing a global business during difficult times, the key factors that comprise Rothoblaas' approach to markets across the world, whilst talking about new projects, including the new fully automated warehouse made from mass timber.
We have a lot of laughs, with Peter Lang (who was not present for the podcast) drawing the short straw and now has to accomodate the four people on the podcast for entertainment and refreshments, Hannes was challenged to ensure we all meet on Norman's Cay (Bahamas) in a years time for the follow up podcast, and much, much, more.
It is clear, despite the laughter, this team is extremely dedicated to working with customers around the world and have taken a dominating position as leaders in the fastening and fixing, fall protection, and associated products for the mass timber sector.
Enjoy this incredible episode with three very special guests from. our primary sponsor, Rotho Blaas.

play

09/19/21 • 9 min

In this weeks episode, Rothoblaas host a webinar dedicated to Asian timber lovers: Designers and builders in tropical climate zones need specific solutions when it comes to timber constructions. This is why we offer a webinar dedicated to all timber lovers living in these Asia. A tower that reaches a height of 75 m (246 ft) may not sound all that impressive – the Empire State Building is over five times taller, after all – but when you consider that the Sara Cultural Centre in Sweden is made almost entirely from wood and is actually one of the world's tallest timber towers, it puts that height into perspective. The project also packs a lot of sustainable features and is expected to become carbon negative in 50 years. Germany’s tallest wooden skyscraper broke ground in Hamburg. The building is called ‘Roots’ and the impressive concrete and wooden structure, sitting at 65 metres and 19 floors. The Mayor of Hamburg, Peter Tschentscher, attended the ceremony in HafenCity and symbolically laid the foundation stone together with Fabian von Köppen, the head of Garbe Immobilien-Projekte GmbH, and Jörg Soehring, the board of directors of the Deutsche Wildtier Foundation. Structurlam CEO Hardy Wentzel has announced that the Penticton, B.C.-based firm is close to commissioning its first U.S. plant, in Conway, Ark. The new 287,000-square-foot facility will produce glulam and CLT, just as Structurlam’s existing three plants in Penticton do, but the U.S. site will have double the production capacity of the Canadian plants.
And the winner is: Willmott Dixon – Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building, University of Warwick. The University of Warwick’s new Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building (IBRB) is a six-storey, 7,000 square-metre facility for up to 300 biomedical researchers. It comprises five floors of labs, plus social and collaborative spaces and a 400-seat lecture theatre. Södra is now launching its complete offering for the assembly of cross-laminated timber (CLT) framing in Denmark. Södra is establishing a new position in CLT across the country and expanding the existing business. This is the first step of Södra’s establishment of the business in Europe and Södra’s complete offering of CLT panels for frame assembly with complementary products and services will now be available in the Danish market. The Transforming Timber initiative – led by Construction Scotland Innovation Centre (CSIC) with support from Edinburgh Napier University, ECOSystems Technologies, the University of Edinburgh, and SNRG – has been awarded £1.45m of funding from Innovate UK’s Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI).

In this very special guest episode about women in construction, I talk to Tamika Smith who is the founder and director of Top 100 Women, who’s made it her mission to build up women in the construction industry. Top 100 Women supports women entering the industry, and gives them the support they need to build long and meaningful careers. Now people from the industry are flocking to Top 100 Women, to get the expertise and advice that can help them retain the women in their workforce. “We know the retention rates are quite low for women in construction,”
Tamika says. “Hence why we’re getting approached by a number of educational providers and large scale companies who want the support for their women.” Builders Academy Australia is proud to be partnered with Top 100 Women and be able to draw on the experience and expertise of someone like Tamika. When we spoke to Tamika recently, she shared how she got involved in building and construction, and how she’s helping to transform the future of our industry.
We talk about what women bring to the construction sector, how empathy can shape the way our industry can support a more inclusive approach. Tamika tells the story of humanity and support for those in need (Kelly's Story) and we discuss the role of women in the construction workforce moving forward.
