Minute One Hundred Twenty Six: From Tony’s Missile Chase to Tony’s Missile Heave Ho

Lester Clark and Kynan Dias from The Exorcist Minute join us in this episode!

In the one-hundred-twenty-sixth minute of The Avengers ...

The chase is on! Tony spots the nuke and does a great U-turn under the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge between Staten Island and Long Island. What does this say about where the F-35 was though? Wasn’t the helicarrier off the east coast of Long Island? And why don’t we ever get to see the Statue of Liberty in this film? Even in the background of one of these shots? Ah well.

Speaking of Tony’s U-turn, the water explosion when he blasts his thrusters at it... quite a kick! So again, what happened to those people under him when he first got his Mark VII on? Ouch.

Tony’s plan is to catch the nuke and push it up through the space hole. But shouldn’t the team on the helicarrier still be doing things? Like scrambling jets? Calling New York’s leaders to evacuate the city? You know, things like that? While it might make sense, we do agree that there’s a story element of having everyone watch that gives us a sense that everything’s been done and all they – just like us – can do is watch. It’s fine. And that leads to Tony’s final push. Tune in!

Minute One Hundred Twenty Five: From Pushing the Button to Tony’s Info About the Nuke Coming In

In the one-hundred-twenth-fifth minute of The Avengers ...

The nuke is off and away! We’ve got a two minute and thirty second clock that starts ticking right here. Will it play out in real time as it does in movie time? We’ll find out two-and-a-half minutes from now!

We come into the fight in slow motion on Thor and Cap as they each retrieve their tools, then ramp up as they battle the Chitauri. It’s an odd moment but does work okay. And they play it well sharing their pain and their ribs. Literally.

Erik and Natasha work on destroying the Tesseract energy with the sceptre but how did she get it from Tony’s patio? Is there a ladder we don’t see? We still have issues with Erik’s secret back door to destroy the Tesseract, but it is what it is. It puts the next steps of the plan into action though as Tony changes Cap’s plans to shut the portal because he realizes there’s more to do. Tune in!

TA127: Tony’s Fall

Minute One Hundred Twenty Seven: From Tony’s Final Push to Tony Falling in Space

In the one-hundred-twenty-seventh minute of The Avengers ...

Tony somehow manages to not hit Stark Tower, which now looks like AI Tower. It’s a bit ridiculous, but it’s a movie so it’s fine. Hulk watches in a dramatic shot, as does Nat. Where’s Clint? Still stuck in that apartment? Cap and Thor watch from the streets below. Tony flies the nuke through the one-sided space hole and everyone cheers, but the battle’s not over yet. Shouldn’t Fury be, you know, directing or something?

Meanwhile, we join Tony on the other side of the one-sided hole, but couldn’t he have just tossed the nuke through and not gone through himself? If his intention was to hit the Chitauri mothership – which he does – wouldn’t it have been better to see him aiming it once through? As it stands, it just looks like he keeps flying straight, until his suit powers down.

Wouldn’t his suit have been bette designed by this point after learning about near space flight in the first Iron Man movie? And even if it powered down, shouldn’t he just keep moving along with the missile because of the vacuum of space? At least the shoulder units pop off to help propel him backward but was that enough?

Regardless, Tony has a spiritual moment here as he seems to be dying. It’s a powerful moment and we’re fans of the moment, even if some of the logistics don’t make sense. Tune in!
