Coaches who coach coaches
Marketing for Coaches
06/07/21 • 11 min
Have you started your coaching journey and thought ‘I get along with coaches, therefore I should try and coach them’? Many people starting out are very interested in coaching coaches because they feel they can relate to this group, or they may feel that it’s a very profitable place to start out. However, if you just think you should coach the coaches, you really need to dig a bit deeper and ask some harder questions, such as what kind of coach do you want to coach?
Today, I talk about what you need to consider if you decide you want to be a coach for coaches. I talk about some of the alarming trends I’ve noticed for coaches just starting out and how these trends set them up for failure. I explain why being a “coach for coaches” can be very vague and why that group may not be specific enough to get your audience. I also discuss the importance of being absolutely clear on the promises you say you can deliver to clients.
“We can teach academically or we can teach from experience. And I prefer when both of those things are true.”
Matthew Kimberley

A Red Velvet Rope Policy for your Coaching Business
Marketing for Coaches
09/17/20 • 20 min
Have you ever heard of the Red Velvet Rope Policy? If you’ve read Book Yourself Solid, you’re already familiar with this term - and may even have a rough idea of what this policy consists of. But for many coaches, the Red Velvet Rope Policy can still be quite confusing.
What exactly is the Red Velvet Rope Policy? Why is it considered the single most essential and most luxurious policy every coach needs to have in their business arsenal?
In today’s episode, I explain what the Red Velvet Rope Policy is and why it is a critical item for every coaching business. I explain how the Red Velvet Rope Policy helps you filter new clients, allowing only those who energize and inspire you. I discuss how the Red Velvet Rope Policy ensures everyone involved in your coaching business has the absolute best experience possible and share examples of Red Velvet Rope Policy successes and failures. I highlight the fears and misconceptions many coaches have about enforcing a Red Velvet Rope Policy in their coaching business and discuss why it is critical for coaches to accept the responsibility of actively looking for reasons why working with a prospective client may not work. I also share strategies you can use to incorporate the Red Velvet Rope Policy assessment into your discovery session conversation.
“There’s nothing more powerful than being an exclusive and selective coach - and that only comes with your Red Velvet Rope Policy.” - Matthew Kimberley

- How a Red Velvet Rope Policy acts as a barrier, filtering prospects so you only work with your ideal clients

Deadlines and Constraints For Coaches
Marketing for Coaches
03/01/21 • 12 min
Do you have a list of things that should get done, but you never feel motivated to finish them? We like to spend time and money on things that we value, but even when we work on a personal project if there are no consequences for missing a deadline we continue to push this work off forever. What’s funny is that there are certain tasks that we dislike doing, such as paying bills or going to the dentist, but we still prioritize them because there are heightened consequences for missing those deadlines. Therefore, if you feel like you're never going to finish your book, your course, or set up your business, you may need to set up a larger consequence for not finishing your project on time.
In today's episode, I discuss 3 types of constraints that I find are effective at helping meet your deadlines. I clarify why it's easier to hold yourself accountable in groups as opposed to self-imposed deadlines. I explain how heightening the consequences of missing a deadline through financial penalties can help you be more motivated to work on your project. I also provide examples of financial constraints others have used to meet their deadlines, and ways you can hold yourself accountable through pre-sales.
"The consequences of just having an accountability buddy are often a lot less than, you know, ramped up accountability, like if there's a financial penalty or if there is a strong or important emotional penalty."- Matthew Kimberley
This week on Book Yourself Solid® Marketing For Coaches Podcast:
- Why we have difficulty completing the “should get done” list
- The different types of deadlines you can impose on yourself
- How Michael Port held someone accountable with a $10,000 check
- Heightening the consequences of missing your deadlines
- What are personal financial restraints?
- Using pre-sale to encourage you to finish your course

Get Uncomfortable To Grow Your Coaching Business
Marketing for Coaches
01/07/21 • 10 min
Does this episode make you uncomfortable? Comfort is a dangerous place to be in your business. When coaches get comfortable, it makes it hard to accomplish the tasks they dislike which can halt the growth in their business. Even if you're not looking to grow, as a coach you very rarely have one client that will take care of you forever. The only way to move through that is to work through what makes you uncomfortable and keep doing it.
In this episode, I discuss why it's important to work through your discomfort and how getting comfortable can kill your business. I provide examples from my life when I had to work through discomfort and what I did to overcome it. I also give an actionable step you can do to start working on overcoming your discomfort.
“By expanding your comfort zone, your business benefits in ways that you never thought would be possible had you not been the sticking block or the barrier to growth by confusing yourself with your business."- Matthew Kimberley

- The importance of repetition
- The Kimberly Kids Kidney Concept

How To Sell Coaching Services
Marketing for Coaches
09/02/21 • 15 min
Many coaches open their doors, hang their shingle, and wait for people to make inquiries about their coaching services. But in the earlier days of my career as a self-employed coach, I learned right away that it’s a bad idea to wait for people to give you their money. There’s nothing wrong with going out to the world to sell your coaching services - to let people know how you can help them and the solutions you have to offer.
In this episode, I go way back to the dawn of time to share what I’ve learned from my first foray into self-employment. I illustrate my experience of living in a countryside boarding school and describe how I learned to juggle from my maths teacher. I explain how I began to make money out of busking as a juggler and discuss how I positioned myself to make people pay me more money. I also explain why you shouldn’t wait for potential coaching clients to initiate a conversation with you and underscore the power of actively taking your sale to the marketplace.
“Take the sale to the person. Hang your shingle, show other people are doing it too, and take the sale to the marketplace.” - Matthew Kimberley
This week on Book Yourself Solid® Marketing For Coaches Podcast:
- How my life in a boarding school in the UK countryside solidified my identity as a ‘proud weirdo’

Coach Marketing vs Coach Prospecting
Marketing for Coaches
01/03/22 • 10 min
A lot of us spend too much time marketing and not enough time understanding our market. In this episode, I talk about the difference between marketing and prospecting.
Today, I define marketing and prospecting. I note the importance of getting to know your audience instead of simply telling a general crowd about your product. I note that knowing your audience will help you fine-tune your message, and I posit that marketing doesn’t get you clients; it just lets potential clients know you exist. Finally, I note the power of simply selling to the leads you already have.
“When you know exactly what the prize looks like, then you can fine-tune your message. And you actually need to do less marketing and more examination of who’s out there and what they need to hear.”
Matthew Kimberley

Disaster-Proofing Your Coaching Business, Part Two
Marketing for Coaches
10/21/21 • 23 min
After overcoming a challenging chapter in my family’s story, I have become prepossessed with the idea of disaster-proofing my coaching business. Because when you’re a business coach, you are essentially running a trade. When you’re running a trade, all sorts of revenue-depleting shockers could happen: an accident, a disaster, or a pandemic. It is a scary thing to think about, but it’s also the reality for all of us. Yet, it’s okay to be terrified. After all, fear can be a productive emotion that can motivate you to put the necessary frameworks in place and disaster-proof your business.
Today, I share my obsession with helping business coaches look after themselves, their family, and their businesses. I highlight a few action points you should be taking to not only to disaster-proof your business but also to scale from having a coaching job to having a coaching business. I also discuss how you can redesign your business beyond merely coaching, mentoring, or teaching for your clients—all of which require you to show up to them—so you can feel more at ease in challenging times.
“Have a standalone, self-serve product. When you need a few months’ off because of sickness or disability, you’ll know that your clients and family are looked after.” - Matthew Kimberley

- The importance of disaster planning for businesses and why it should matter to you
- The differences between having a coaching business, a coaching job, and self-employment

Should Coaches Do Affiliate Marketing?
Marketing for Coaches
11/09/20 • 13 min
Affiliate marketing can be a beneficial revenue stream for any kind of business. However, too many people who claim to be coaches spend so much of their time, energy, and effort in affiliate marketing that it makes you wonder whether they’re actually a coach or an influencer. Such is the case of coaches who enter launch partnerships: do they have their own businesses or are they just salespeople for others’ coaching services?
But if affiliate marketing can indeed be beneficial, how and when can you incorporate it into your coaching business as an additional income stream?
In this episode, I share my thoughts on affiliate marketing. I illustrate how affiliate marketing works and list a few businesses that use affiliate marketing programs as part of their business model. I discuss the relationship between your database of prospects and the amount of money you can make from affiliate marketing. I also describe the difference between high and low effort affiliate marketing, explain when you should and should not become an affiliate, and reveal the most valuable asset in your job as a coach.
“What you promote and how frequently you do it will go a long way in affecting the trust that you have with your prospects and clients.” - Matthew Kimberley
