MAKE SPACE with Cara Newhart // home design & diy
I am so excited for these next two episodes. I am doing a two-part series and I feel like it is exactly what so many of us need as we wrap up this holiday season. When it comes to the home in the holidays there is so much focus on decorating, cleaning, and hosting, and it can be overwhelming if you are not actively making sure you are doing things intentionally and creating balance for yourself. In these episodes, I am going to dive into space care. I hope these next couple of episodes give you a break and help you get quiet and intentional about your house in a way that is really going to support you in this season of busyness and fun. You can download this episode from Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, and Spotify – or listen to it below! listen now in this episode [01:35] What is space care? The idea of space care is that caring for our environment and intentionally setting up spaces that support our everyday life is a form of self care. [06:06] Phase 1: Releasing Phase number one of four is the releasing phase. Think of this as fall and this phase is all about letting go of what is not working. It is important to do this first. It can be items that are not working but it can also be like deeply rooted limiting beliefs, other people's opinions, or maybe physical items. In this phase, we're identifying what we're holding on to that's not serving us and then we're giving ourselves permission to let it go so that we can make space for something even better. [08:48] Limiting beliefs we have around our home 10:14 When we look at something that's not working well in our house, we tend to look at the physical thing, like the pile of junk, or the room that doesn't function well. These negative feelings can actually be affecting this a lot and they're really hard to kind of identify and call out because they're thoughts and feelings that come and go. Having these negative feelings about our spaces is natural so I don't want you to shame yourself, or feel bad for not liking things about your home. I want you to understand that when we dwell on them and when we don't use them as a tool to inform actual action steps that we can take to make things better, that's what's not serving us. Let's bring these negative thoughts and emotions up to the surface so we can get clear on what needs to change. [14:32] Phase 2: Cleansing Number two is our winter phase and cleansing phase. This phase is all about clearing away smaller things that are unpleasant or unwanted. This can be things like a little negative thought that comes up or just cleaning your house kind of like maintenance cleaning. With the cleansing stage, the most tangible version of this principle is in cleaning your house and looking at your approach and how you're creating a sustainable cleaning routine. It can also encompass daily homecare, and making little small tweaks to your space. [16:19] 3 questions to focus on in the cleansing phase The three questions from the journal that I would say to focus on are, number one, if you avoid cleaning your house at times and this feels difficult for you to have a strong routine, why is that happening? Are you overwhelmed? Do you just hate cleaning? Then how does a clean home make you feel? Because if you are comfortable in the mess you don't have to change that. You can live however you want. But if it does make you feel uneasy, uncomfortable, unsettled, to have your home not be clean,

#073: Space Care Pt. 2

We are on part two of our Space Care series. If you haven’t listened to part one I would definitely recommend talking there because that is going to give you the first two phases that really help all of this make sense and we also talk about mental health. Today we are going to talk about phases 3 and 4 of space care. In a season of busyness, we need to take time to take care of ourselves, and taking care of ourselves also looks like taking care of our environment and making sure it is set up to support us. You can download this episode from Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Stitcher, and Spotify – or listen to it below! listen now in this episode [02:13] Making your dream home [06:47] Phase 3: Nurturing [08:18] 2 questions to focus on in the nurturing phase [14:55] Phase 4: Enhancing [18:42] Questions to ask yourself in the enhancing phase links Make Space Podcast Website Cara on Instagram Cara on Twitter Color Curator Workshop DIY Coaching Session Design Consultation connect with cara: Cara on Instagram Cara on Twitter [02:13] Making your dream home I genuinely believe that you do not need a lot of money and you do not need to hire professionals. You just need creativity and intentionality so that you have really clear goals for what you're making and then you're expressing yourself through your spaces. That is all it takes to make your dream home [06:47] Phase 3: Nurturing So the next phase is nurturing. This phase is all about cultivating and encouraging growth. So this can be taking time to set goals, making the decision to tackle a new project, intentionally creating a floor plan that functions well, doing home repairs, or just reflecting on what you love about your home. This phase is all about starting new things and this stage helps you come back to the center after a releasing or cleansing stage and it creates a foundation for growth. [08:18] 2 questions to focus on in the nurturing phase There are a few questions in the journal that help you dive into this. What are some goals you have for your home? If this is challenging for you because you've never set goals for your home then take time to unpack why that is. So first I would dive into that conversation with yourself around whatever goals you have for your house and if you don't have any, what are some tangible things that you want to achieve in your space as we enter the new year? The second question out of like five or six in this book that I think is very interesting to dive into is what is something extremely challenging or difficult that's happened to you and how did your home support you as you went through this? If we nurture our home then our homes nurture us. When we're talking about this cycle of space care, in terms of nurturing, we're not just saying, we need to take care of our house and nurture our spaces. We're also saying we need to set up our spaces to nurture us and so that is really beautiful to reflect on. How has our home done that for us? [14:55] Phase 4: Enhancing The final stage is enhancing. This phase is all about doing more of what is working and taking the next step to make things even better. This can be a gratitude practice, or tackling a really fun and transformational home project like painting a wall or renovating a room. This phase is really about taking action to bring about the changes that you're crystal clear on so this stage is a major growth phase. [18:42] Questions to ask yourself in the enhancing phase Here are some questions you can ask yourself from the journal that line up with this era. Take some time to reflect on what about your home you feel most grateful for. What do you love about your house? What lights you up when you walk in the door or when you're gone after a long time of vacation? If you are planning ahead, looking at 2023,
