Mainline Executive Coaching ACT
Rich Baron and Maikel Bailey
Steam Locomotives were some of the most powerful machines ever built. They represent vision, ingenuity, collaboration, and extraordinary human achievement. However, to get to the next destination, they had to be directed to the mainline. This required someone directing the train through a series of switches to reach the right destination. Just like these amazing machines, leaders and organizations alike need the right direction to reach their destinations. Intelligent Leadership is the key to success and cultural transformation. With over 50 years of combined success in executive leadership, cultural transformation, and executive and emerging leader development, Rich Baron and Maikel Bailey bring to light some of the most pressing issues facing leaders and organizations today. Hand-picked and certified by the world’s top leadership development authority, John Mattone, we will partner with you to improve your leadership ability and cultural transformation in ways you never thought possible. Is AI the Future of Coaching?
Mainline Executive Coaching ACT
02/08/24 • 28 min
To be honest, when it comes to AI, Isaac Asimov comes to mind with his book, I, Robot. With the three primary laws of robotics, along with the movie starring Will Smith, AI seemed to be far-flung and futuristic. Never had there been a consideration that AI could help in the coaching process. The primary concern would be that the human element that is so crucial to the coach/client relationship would start to diminish. Or worse, be replaced by a supercomputer named VIKI and guarded by homicidal NS-5 robots.
However, our guest on today's episode, Samiur Rahman, has dispelled some of those concerns. In reality, for professional coaches, generative AI can be immensely helpful in several ways. for example, AI could automate the tasks of preparing for sessions, which coaches spend a lot of time on, or, analyze past interactions and behaviors to create customized content to help individuals improve in specific areas.
Samiur Rahman is the CEO and Co-founder of the company, Heyday. Along with his business partner, Sam DeBrule, their organization focuses on helping coaches become more efficient by eliminating some of the tedious tasks associated with coaching, allowing the coach to spend more effective time with their clients.
Join Rich and Maikel as they discuss AI with Samiur and its impact on coaching on this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.

The Elephant in the Boardroom: Executive Addiction
Mainline Executive Coaching ACT
12/01/21 • 29 min
In the professional business world, it is estimated that as much as 11.4% of global executives have a dependency issue. In the corporate world, this problem is often ignored or poorly managed. Recognizing and dealing with the dependency of a leader is extremely difficult as most of these individuals may have little or no direct supervision, and often have dedicated employees in their circles that will do anything to protect his or her image. However, the erratic behaviors associated with addiction will inevitably become painfully evident both for the leader and the organization. Decision making suffers, judgment is compromised and behavior tends to fluctuate. The corporation itself will begin to reflect these same issues. This problem hits home for many of us who may know someone, or have experienced this issue in our our personal world.
Professional addiction is one of the most untreated treatable problems. Executive Recovery Coaches, Kylie Butler and Sophie Aghdami, are co-founders of From Here On, a coaching practice that offers ‘at home’ rehab programs specifically designed for executives. With extensive experience in the corporate world, they both have a deep understanding of the pitfalls and pain points that come with that lifestyle, and are on a mission to help others.
Kylie currently lives in Bali, and is an Executive Recovery Coach and has been working in the recovery space for several years. She is in recovery from alcoholism with a personal recovery journey spanning the last ten years. During her 15+ year Human Resources career she held a number of senior leadership roles including Head of People & Culture and Talent Director. Her experience spans Training and Development to Generalist HR and her expertise is understanding how to inspire and engage people.
Kylie has always had a deep interest in understanding people’s psychological drivers and has spent many years studying and attending workshops to better understand the human mind. Kylie is a trained coach and has paired continual academic study with the study of Buddhist philosophy and meditation. Most recently she’s studied Complex Psychological Trauma under Dr Reshie Joseph and gained accreditation as a certified Recovery Coach. Kylie s

The Diagnostic Tools of Leadership and Cultural Development
Mainline Executive Coaching ACT
10/07/21 • 20 min
Prescription before diagnosis is malpractice. A physician would not prescribe a path to wellness if they did not know the patient's current condition. It would be considered unethical, negligent, improper or simply put, malpractice. The same applies to leadership and cultural development. Surveys, assessments and shareholder input are only diagnostic tools used to determine current condition and to develop the correct plan for the leader or organization. So what happens when organizations utilize these tools (either internally or from an outside source) and then only get the results with no developmental plan afterwards? Or worse yet, ignore the results or fail all together to implement a plan to address the issues? Rich and Maikel will unpack this topic on the this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.

Choose Your Weapons
Mainline Executive Coaching ACT
05/01/23 • 25 min
Imagine opening up your email and there is a notice from your HR department that it is time for another round of 360-degree feedback, or that they are sending out another cultural assessment survey. Why is it that this single email can create so much anxiety in the organization? Why do 360-degree appraisals, and cultural assessments work well in some cases, and in others fail miserably? It is because more often than not, these tools exacerbate bureaucracy, heighten political tensions, and create an enormous amount of distrust because they have been weaponized in the hands of the wrong people. These types of assessments are great if used correctly and for the purpose they were intended for which is to improve overall performance, not as a tool to identify poor performers.
Companies that have success with these programs tend to be open to learning, subject to vulnerabilities, and responsive to thoughtful design and purposeful change. These companies are led by executives who are direct about the expected benefits as well as the challenges and who actively demonstrate support for the process. These executives lay themselves open to praise and criticism from all directions and invite others to do the same. By doing so, they can guide their organizations to higher degrees of success and continuous improvement.
Rich and Maikel assess these assessments in this edition of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.

As executive coaches, it is critical to establish a starting point in order to be effective in helping the client develop their leadership styles. Should I Stay or Should I Go
Mainline Executive Coaching ACT
04/10/24 • 23 min
As the labor market cools, companies are increasing their efforts to bring workers back to the office, though not necessarily requiring them to come in five days a week. The trend towards remote work is still ongoing, with some employers enforcing a return to office policy, but not necessarily on a full-time basis. There is an increasing agreement that while working in-person has benefits, there are also advantages to remote work, at least some of the time.
However, the precise contours of the new hybrid status quo are still a work in progress. From a leadership standpoint, it is a potential train wreck in the making. To effectively maintain a highly functional culture, and balance organizational success, this will take a new breed of leader who are adept at keeping their fingers on the pulse of how this fast-changing reality is evolving. The days of promoting great individual contributors to leadership positions without high-level leadership development and business acumen are in the past.
Rich and Maikel discuss the new hybrid status-quo business models in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.

Are You Blind To Your Toxic Work Culture Part One - Toxic Leadership
Mainline Executive Coaching ACT
03/15/23 • 28 min
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, over 47 million workers in the country quit their jobs in 2021 in what we now refer to as the Great Resignation. The number one reason for the mass walkout was not poor pay or benefits, it was a toxic work culture. In other words: People aren’t running to better pay or benefits, they’re running from feeling overworked, undermined, and unappreciated. A toxic work culture is by far the strongest predictor of industry-adjusted attrition and is 10.4 times more important than compensation in predicting turnover. So what did companies learn from this? Aside from the lip service provided by many companies after the great resignation, statistics show that we really didn't learn much. In 2023 the top reason for people leaving their jobs is still poor work culture.
In this series on toxic work culture, we will discuss some of the reasons for poor culture and some ways to correct the problems.

Why Do People Say You Should Never Trust Human Resources?
Mainline Executive Coaching ACT
01/23/24 • 34 min
A prevalent statement you often come across is, "HR serves the company, not the employees." This statement holds true! However, it does not imply that HR is inherently untrustworthy or that you should anticipate them to be confrontational when seeking assistance. Human Resources fulfills an important and complex role in balancing what’s best for the company with what is best for its employees. When employees experience interpersonal issues at work, HR is often considered as the go-to.
But what do you do when HR ignores the problem, makes it worse, or is the problem?
An HR problem is incredibly damaging to an organization and its reputation. It can create a toxic company culture that impedes productivity, collaboration, and increases resignations. Furthermore, HR can also create problems regarding prospective employees in the recruitment process, repelling great candidates, or ignoring the talent that the organization truly needs.
Rich and Maikel discuss issues in HR in this episode of Mainline Executive Coaching ACT.
