play

05/05/22 • 56 min

Have you ever dated—or married!—a mama’s boy? If so, this episode is for you! Jody O’Brien spent 12 years married to a Mother Enmeshed Man (MEM). She shares the confusion and pain of loving a man who loves you, but loves his mother more.

Jody and I discuss:

  • How a MEM breadcrumbs you even when you’re already married.
  • The tenderness a MEM displays to women—which is initially very attractive, but will eventually sabotage your relationship.
  • The guilt and shame a MEM feels when he makes efforts toward independence.
  • The boundary violations inherent to enmeshed mothers and their adult sons.
  • The self-loathing a MEM experiences because he knows he should stand up to his mother, but he sadly lacks the wherewithal.
  • The fear enmeshed mothers feel which plays into their desire to control and cling to their sons.

If you’ve ever dated a MEM—or want to be sure you avoid doing so—join us!

In the US alone, more than 300,000 couples over the age of 50 divorce every year and this trend is growing. If you include the adult children involved, between 900,000 and 1.2 million people are impacted by the dissolution of these marriages. In fact, the term “gray divorce” has entered the lexicon to describe couples who part ways later in life.

Despite the number of people affected by gray divorce, few resources exist to provide support as adult children manage this unexpected and painful family division.

Psychotherapists Carol Hughes and Bruce Fredenburg join me to discuss their book, Home Will Never Be the Same Again: A Guide for Adult Children of Gray Divorce.

So often, adult children of divorce feel invisible. Because they’re adults, others assume they’ll move through the divorce with ease. Their parents may even expect them to feel happy for them as they embark upon their new life. But adult children grieve the loss of their family and in addition to this pain, they’re faced with the challenges of visiting multiple homes for the holidays and navigating competing expectations for loyalty.

Join us for an empathic conversation around the realities of gray divorce and its deep impact on all involved.

Love & Life with Dr. Karin & Pastor Elliott - Dying to Be Free!  How to Take Charge in Oppressive Times with Dr. Leland Stillman Ep. 311
play

08/01/24 • 53 min

Our world feels increasingly chaotic and morally inverted. And for those who remain skeptical and endeavor to think critically and rationally, it’s extremely overwhelming.

As you know from episode 294 “COVID Trauma: How to Move Through Post COVID Stress Disorder,” Elliott and I have lost trust in many, if not most, of the institutions we once thought were at least somewhat honorable.

Who can we trust? What’s going on behind the scenes? Who’s actually in charge and why are they so determined to strip us of our rights?

I frequently listen to Dr. Joseph Mercola’s podcast and when I heard his interview with Dr. Leland Stillman, I immediately bought Dr. Stillman’s book, Dying to be Free: How America's Ruling Class Is Killing and Bankrupting Americans, and What to Do About It.

I devoured the book in a few days. It covers an enormous amount of ground and provides answers to questions like the ones I posed above.

If you’re not familiar with Dr. Leland Stillman and his work, I’m thrilled to introduce you to him in today’s episode.

Our father told us to “Take Charge” in every aspect of our lives. If you want to know how to take charge in these oppressive times, this episode is for you!

Love & Life with Dr. Karin & Pastor Elliott - The Mental Health War: How to Fight It! Ep. 262

The Mental Health War: How to Fight It! Ep. 262

Love & Life with Dr. Karin & Pastor Elliott

play

09/07/23 • 45 min

We’re in the midst of a mental health war. Over the last 50 years, we’ve raised awareness and developed abundant treatment options, yet Americans’ rates of depression and anxiety continue to skyrocket (Whitaker, 2015).

Today, Elliott and I discuss my reflections on his recent messages about the epidemics of anxiety, depression, loneliness, and addiction.

We conceptualize the current mental health landscape as a war for two reasons: (1) because so many Americans battle psychological concerns and (2) professionals are in the midst of deeply contentious disputes regarding how to best treat clients’ emotional distress.

Pharmaceutical corporations and many psychiatrists view this issue through a medical model i.e. patients are diagnosed with psychiatric illnesses and are prescribed pills to manage symptoms. But despite an exponential increase in the use of psychotropic medications, the number of Americans filing disability claims due to mental conditions has tripled over the last two decades (Whitaker, 2015).

Elliott and I argue that a “medicalized” framework pathologizes reasonable responses to trauma and pain; this frameworks also disempowers clients—which is both an unintended and unfortunate consequence. Furthermore, and very importantly, most pharmaceutical interventions for psychological conditions simply don’t work as promised—if at all (Brogan, 2016, 2019; Whitaker, 2015).

Join our conversation to learn the necessary tactics for engaging in this mental health war!

Love & Life with Dr. Karin & Pastor Elliott - Testosterone-Laden Men—A Bad Thing? Ep. 318

Testosterone-Laden Men—A Bad Thing? Ep. 318

Recently, I heard a term, “testosteroni.” It was used in a pejorative manner to describe “testosterone-laden” men. In the conversation, these testosterone-laden men were pitted against a kinder, gentler model of manhood.

I wasn’t sure just what they were getting at. But, I had questions.

  1. Is testosterone inherently a bad thing?
  2. Does it cause problems for men?
  3. How does it impact our perception of masculinity in general?
  4. Does testosterone end up being a disadvantage in our modern world?
  5. Why cast aspersions at a hormone? (One which women also possess, by the way).

I wanted to hear Elliott’s thoughts about Testosteronis vs. Beta Males.

We delve into all this and more as we continue our “What is a Man?” series. Please join us!

Love & Life with Dr. Karin & Pastor Elliott - Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors, and the Drug Company that Addicted America with Beth Macy Ep. 201
play

08/31/22 • 38 min

For the last year, people have been asking me, “Have you watched Dopesick? Karin, you have to see it!” So, I subscribed to Hulu and started the series and also read the book on which the series is based.

The true story is incredibly disturbing and tragic and heartbreaking.

Author Beth Macy exposes how Purdue Pharma, the makers of Oxycontin, convinced doctors their patients had virtually no chance of becoming addicted to their new “wonder drug.”

But, it wasn’t true.

I knew some parts of this horrific story from reading Dreamland: The True Tale of America’s Opioid Epidemic and interviewing Dreamland’s author, Sam Quinones in episode 95 of the podcast. He connects the dots between prescription medications and heroin addiction.

In Dopesick, we witness this play out in graphic detail.

Most of you know, I’m no fan of Big Pharma. Of course, I’m thankful for medical advances which have saved millions of lives. But, as we’ve talked about in prior episodes, pharmaceutical corporations exist to make profits for their shareholders—or, in the case of Purdue Pharma, to increase a family’s fortune.

We must take this reality into account when we consider pharma’s marketing and messaging—regarding psychiatric medications, of course. And, as Dopesick demonstrates—even when a doctor writes us a prescription for pain pills.

If you doubt this, if you think maybe I’m a bit hyperbolic when it comes to all this pharma stuff, please listen to this episode!

Strong, independent adults in our twenties, thirties, forties (and beyond!) sometimes still feel pressure from our families—pressure to conform to family expectations, pressure to be at a certain stage of our lives, pressure to make choices consistent with our family’s values. Moreover, establishing a distinct identity within the context of our families often proves even more challenging for adult children from traditional upbringings and/or members of “third cultures.” Life coach Varsha Mathur shares her experiences with dating, marriage, and divorce as a “third culture” American woman of South Asian descent.
Join us to learn:
· How to assert yourself within your family in a psychologically healthy manner.
· Why individuation is typically more difficult for members of a “third culture.”
· The pervasive fear inherent to the individuation process—for both parents and adult children.
· How to identify and manage covert “family rules.”
· The difference between following your heart and trusting your gut.
· When to open the lines of communication with your family and when to recognize you don’t owe anyone any explanations.
· How to take back your power and agency.
· How I used Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy on myself to take charge of my thoughts (and my life) after calling off my wedding!
Varsha and I explore the challenges of individuating from family of origin—challenges that, for most of us, persist to some degree throughout adulthood—and provide strategies for how to remain close to, while also independent from, our families in adulthood.

Love & Life with Dr. Karin & Pastor Elliott - “No Pressure” Besties: My BFF and I Share How it’s Done! Ep. 152
play

08/19/21 • 54 min

“We’ll be besties forever!” “No matter what happens, we’ll stay close.” “You’re my BFF and nothing will change that!”

We said it. We meant it.

But life happens, and it gets in the way of even the closest friendship. And sometimes it hurts—a lot.

But we CAN remain close—as we talked about in last week’s episode—by examining our expectations.

My BFF, Miriam Conner, joins me to share her philosophy on friendship—the “No Pressure” friendship. Specifically, we delve into:

  • How to maintain strong friendships while also adjusting our expectations as our priorities shift.
  • What developmental psych research on preschoolers and empathy can teach us about adult friendships!
  • Three options for how to respond when a friend disappoints us.
  • Personal stories of when we both found ourselves needing to cut friends out of our lives.
  • How to handle it when a friend cancels plans at the last minute.
  • What to do when a friend changes dramatically.
  • How to politely disengage from a friend who has unreasonable expectations.
  • The parallels between dating/marriage and lifelong friendships.
  • Why some women LOVE drama in their friendships.

Join us to learn how to cultivate “no pressure friendships” with your besties!
