Sunn m’Cheaux is a native of a Gullah/Geechee Family from Mt Holly, South Carolina. He is an artist, actor, writer, poet, singer skater, chef, conversationalist and is on a journey to preserve the Gullah/Geechee language, the culture, the family land and “Mama’s House”. Sunn m’Cheaux has the prestigious honor, to teach 7th graders from Cambridge Public Schools cultural roots, identity and language, inside Harvard Hall at Harvard University. He says his goal for his classroom is to be a space of learning & living the languages he teaches. Growing up on land owned and tended by his family dating back to 1850, Sunn m’Cheaux tells the story of how his great grandfather planted an oak tree that now towers above Rural Low Country Land, family land. “Mama’s House” as he affectionately refers to it, was the heart of the community, having her chicken coops clucking, billy goat grazing, ornery geese chasing, wild pecans, cherries, persimmons, muscadine grapes (bullets), apples, vegetables & all the blackberries her skirt-tale could carry from her own yard, caught on fire, displacing Mama from her home and the land. The family and some “Good Samaritans” are banding together to rebuild it this year. In an climate of gentrification, developer land grabs and urban sprawl, education & raising awareness to the plight of we Gullah/Geechee peopleis essential. Sunn m’Cheaux has made the celebration and preservation of all-things Gullah/Geechee his life's work at Harvard, in Cambridge Massachusetts. This is a “Living Legacy” that must not die. www.gullahteacha.com https://www.gofundme.com/fa-ma-moda-help-build-gullahgeechee-elder039s-home
