Lost in Postulation is back for an eighth installment after a three week hiatus! We kick things off with Nicola providing a brief update and key takeaways from his recent travels to the end of the earth (1:20) before getting into our main postulation block of the episode about music in film (7:50).

We dive deep on film scores from every angle starting by placing them within their historical context (10:45), discussing 'The King of Themes' John Williams (14:45), Howard Shore's impact on Lord of the Rings (17:23) and some of our other favorite themes (20:55). It's then on to composer postulations where we rate Hans Zimmer (33:00), give credit to Ennio Morricone (39:20), sprinkle in some Hitchcock (44:00) and discuss an interesting new composer trend (46:30).

We wrap things up by diving into our listener mailbag where we receive global postulations on the topic of saunas (49:24).

On this episode of HFC, Roy and Nicola introduce the first installment of a series on cult teams that captivated audiences worldwide. Before that though, Nicola expresses his love for the manager taking the premier league by storm (3:18). Roy then counters by asking why Inter keeps winning the Milan derby with such ease (6:25).

Then, where better to kickoff the new series off than in the most cultish league of all? Roy takes us back to a stretch from 1998-2004 that saw Valencia emerge as a continental powerhouse (11:43). They explore the rise and subsequent fall of a legendary club who, after fifteen years, is yet to finish work on their 'new' stadium. How much of their success was due to Santi Cañizares' hair? Do we underrate Claudio Ranieri's role in it all? Could they have won even more? Will we ever see another Valencia emerge? And where does Rafa Benitez rank in the pantheon of great 21st century managers (49:30)?

Tune in for our next episode on another Spanish cult team and write us in with what you want to hear more of at our X account @InPostulation, Instagram @lostinpostulation and via email [email protected]! Lost In Postulation - 64. Creaters Gonna Create - with Graham O'Hara
play

10/04/24 • 57 min

With Nicola otherwise occupied, Neil is joined by none other than singer-songwriter Graham O'Hara to discuss creativity, finding your voice and how a beginner can take their first steps into making music.

First though, please wipe your feet and take off your shoes before jumping into our standard mundane postulation (2:30) where the guys discuss a uniquely cultural debate: shoes on or shoes off at home? Do you let guests make up their own mind, and are dogs exempt from clean foot protocols?

From there it's onto the main segment of the episode (11:26), where Graham takes us through his experience as a songwriter with over 20 years of experience making music. We start with how Graham developed his love of music, the factors - conscious and subconscious - that drew him to music originally, and the highs and lows along the way. Graham expands on just how he manages to create at such a furious pace (21:29), and how he navigates the unavoidable territory of social media as a musician today (27:50).

Next it's onto his advice for beginners (33.29) - how can new musicians avoid that initial wall of frustration when progress doesn't come as quickly as you hoped? And how do you finally force yourself to just sit down and play that instrument that's been gathering dust (36:47)?

Finally, the guys discuss feedback (48:56): should budding creators share their early efforts far and wide, or focus on creating content that compells themselves first and foremost? And are The Killers doomed or lucky to play Mr Brightside at every gig?

You can pre-save Graham's new single You Are before it releases on October 31st at the pre-save link here: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/grahamohara/you-are, and find him on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/grahamohmusic/

This week, Nicola was joined by football historian Chris Lee from Outside Write to discuss the intersection of football and politics. Our interview centers around his most recent book Defiant: A History Of Football Against Fascism.

Chris takes us on a journey from Italy under Mussolini (8:10) to debunking myths about the politics behind El Clasico in Spain (25:30). We then hear the remarkable story of how a team that now sits in the third division of the Portuguese pyramid helped to bring down the Salazar dictatorship (38:30). There is also talk about South America (44:47) and an infamous Death Match in Ukraine (47:55).

You can find more content from Chris Lee on his website, Outside Write, here. And, if you would like to dive deeper into everything we've covered on this episode, checkout his full-length book here.

Lost In Postulation - 12. Planes, Trains and Lucrative Deals
play

03/08/23 • 59 min

It's highbrow from the get-go as we start by asking where the best place to sit on a plane is (2:55) and end up discussing tactics for dealing with your row neighbors as well as night train shenanigans.

Then, in light of Chris Rock's recent comedy special, it's on to our core postulation, which sees claims of sweet validation for a previous prediction (12:19). We then go through the key takeaways from the live show in Baltimore (14:45) before ruminating on the state of comedy in 2023 (21:20) and why everyone should try standup at least once in their lives (26:20).

We round things off by showcasing some brilliant listener postulations that came through following our Happily Everest After episode (39:24).

Lost In Postulation - 13. Every Oscar Scrambled All At Once
play

03/15/23 • 72 min

On this special bumper episode we delve into the Oscars multiverse in an effort to uncover some fresh postulations about Hollywood's biggest night. First though, we hear from Neil about how to keep our scrambled eggs "walking" (1:30).

Then in our main section we provide our takes on the 2023 Oscars winners and losers (9:24) before traveling back in time to understand how the Oscars became the campaigning and business-oriented event they are today (21:35). This leads us on a journey to the following enticing postulations: how often does the Academy actually get the winner for Best Picture right (33:10)? and what would change if we were to award the Oscars with a ten year delay (42:55)?

We end with our first ever head-to-head quiz showdown where we encourage all listeners to play along. Who will go down as the LIP Oscars Trivia World Champion (52:09)?

Corrections & Amendments: Kathryn Bigelow did, in fact, win Best Director for The Hurt Locker in 2009. Joe Pesci won Best Supporting Actor for Goodfellas in 1991. Daniel Kaluuya won Best Supporting Actor for Judas and the Black Messiah in 2021 and not for Best Actor, as mentioned.

This week our red thread is all about TV endings. Before delving into that though, we start things off with our mundane postulation about vacation spots (2:22). Is a city trip always preferable to a beach holiday? And is the summer mountain trip a dark horse?

Then we wrap up HBO's The Last of Us (16:40). We discuss where the season peaked and what we can expect from season 2. After that, we preview the final season of Succession (23:50) by revising our big bets, ruminating about who comes out with the hottest stock after four seasons and postulate about whether Succession is one of the most compelling pieces of television ever. Then Nicola gives flowers to Ted Lasso and we contemplate cutting Netflix for Apple TV+ (40:00) before briefly showcasing how Neil Lasso has been trolling the so-called FPL experts (46:45).

We wrap things up by paying our respects to The Wire's Lance Reddick who sadly passed away last Friday (51:40).

LIP's diamond anniversary gets off to a bang with a postulation about Pringles (3:00)! Does the fact that the tube is too small to fit your hand actually aid the enjoyment? What other foods can this postulation be applied to? And have we been sleeping on the GOAT of potato chips?

Then, our core postulatory segment sees us channel our inner Delilahs as we field questions from the (in)famous subreddit: Am I The Asshole (10:07)? What is the etiquette on bringing you partner along for a wedding weekend they were not invited to? Are parents allowed to skip toilet queues without asking politely? Are you naive for not getting travel insurance and then expecting reimbursement? And are you entitled to complaining about a raise?

All of this and much more on this episode of LIP! Keep postulating, listeners!

Welcome to Husman FC: a new LIP produced podcast about football/soccer! They reflect on Simeone's impact on Atletico, what it means that he (of all people) has become the longest-tenured manager in Europe and dive into the data that proves his success (or lack thereof).
