003: Missional Engagement with Jeff Christopherson
04/05/20 • 58 min
There are moments in our lives that just change us. One of those moments for me (Derek, the creator of Lost and Found Podcast) was in 2006 when I listened to Jeff Christopherson present something he called Kingdom Matrix at a conference in Keller, Tx. Perhaps Jeff being a fellow Canuck played into it, but Jeff, as only he can do, gave pictures and graphics and language to a conversation I suspected God was having with his church. The status quo was not working. As Jeff says, we need a new kind of church led my a new kind of leader or missionary and a new level of collaboration among churches for mission. Since that fateful day in 2006 my thinking on missional engagement has been forever changed.
Jeff is writes a blog, Missio Mondays for Christianity Today, and has authored three books: Kingdom Matrix, Kingdom First and Venal Dogmatta. An expanded edition of Kingdom Matrix is now available with a study guide by Mac Lake. You can order these books from Amazon by clicking on highlighted the links.
Our Guest: Jeff Christopherson
The most significant thing to know about Jeff is not what he does, but who he is. Jeff Christopherson is a man of substance and character. Devoted Jesus follower, faithful husband and dad, loving son, loyal friend are descriptions of who Jeff is. He is a brilliant missiologist who, in his thinking, serves out of his weakness in God's strength. 002: A Story of Redemption with One8Tea
One8Tea (pronounced 180) was born with music flowing in his heart. His grandmother toured Nova Scotia singing A cappella gospel music and his uncle Michael was an award artist who went on to perform only gospel music. Born and raised Halifax, Nova Scotia, One8Tea hit the Hip Hop music scene seriously in 1995 and success was immediate. As he describes it, success was the best thing and the worst thing that could have happened to him. Chasing the dream, however, quickly became a personal nightmare...as a heavy addiction to drugs and a partying lifestyle took control and he began to lose everything including his family. But the story doesn’t stop there.
Our Guest: One8Tea
One8Tea is the kind of guy you just want to hang out with. He is genuinely funny and has a heart for people that is undeniable. 004: Opening Your Heart and Your Home with Megan Wetendorf
There are some interviews that just crush your heart, and my (Derek) time with Megan Wetendorf was one of those times. I feel the need to make full disclosure: Megan is our daughter and she and her husband, John, have adopted two children and are into their third foster placement. There is just something about the plight of children who have to be removed from their parents because of neglect or a high likelihood of harm coming to them in the home, that exposes my most raw emotions.
How do you the acknowledge the abuse and horrors that have at times befallen these sweet children and move beyond it to genuinely love the people who may have inflicted the pain? How do you move from wanting to shield and protect these children to whole heartedly supporting reunification? As Megan writes in a blog article on our website, "It is actually pretty simple. Be open and engage them in your reality and pray, pray, pray for them".
With remarkable honesty Megan spoke with us about the challenges of staying on the same page as husband and wife, bonding with foster and adopted children, managing challenging relationships and about being catalytic in encouraging life change in the biological mother and family. In the end, foster parenting is about grace and hope. Megan's heart for these children and their biological families comes across with crystal-like clarity that challenges us to answer God's invitation to care for these children in need of a safe and loving home. Enjoy the episode!
