Why This is Now a Rebuild for the Cincinnati Reds and who could be the Most Important Trade Pieces
11/12/21 • 29 min
2 Listeners
Nick Krall tipped his hand at the beginning of this offseason by saying the Cincinnati Reds would "realign the payroll with their budget." The Reds are going to begin a new rebuild, this offseason. IT doesn't have to be to the level of decimation and negative timeline of 2015, though, as the Reds have players who could bring in a favorable return.
Luis Castillo and Sonny Gray are important pitchers on this team, and can be aces for many other pitching staffs. Jesse Winker is a young, talented hitter with the ability play the corner outfield positions adequately. All three have what other teams covet almost as much as talent: multiple years of team control. So, with savvy trades by Krall and the front office, this doesn't have to be a lengthy time of non-playoff competition.
They also have guys in-house who they can build around. Jonathan India is the odds on favorite to win the NL Rookie of the Year award, Tyler Mahle was arguably the team's best pitcher in 2022, and if they don't trade him, Winker can help anchor the lineup. Saying the word rebuild does not have to mean years of 90+ losses for the Reds, if they do it right.

Is this the Lowest Cincinnati Reds Fans Have Ever Felt About the Franchise?
There was a point when the Big Red Machine was taken apart. Players were traded away, or let go through free agency, and it all had to end. That doesn't compare to the frustration that is being wrought at Great American Ballpark, currently.
The Tony Perez trade signaled the end of an era, but at least there were recent successes for Reds fans to hang their hats on. As it currently stands, the Reds have been next-to irrelevant for the better part of 30 years...and it seems like we're being told to wait a little longer.
There's also another news outlet crowning Jonathan India the NL Rookie of the Year, now all that's left is the big one. Jeff Ruby is doing his best to bring Nick Castellanos back to Cincinnati, but will it be enough? And Nick Lodolo had an interesting year in the minors but looks poised to compete for a spot in the Reds starting rotation. What is it that is keeping him from being a lock?

Why Jonathan India may not win NL Rookie of the Year and What's at Stake for Major League Baseball with these Labor Negotiations
Jonathan India had an amazing rookie season and has swept pretty much every rookie of the year award to this point, so there's no way the Cincinnati Reds second baseman will miss out on the BBWAA NL Rookie of the Year award...right? Before Jeff tells you why Dylan Carlson or Trevor Rogers might steal the show, he looks at something MLB and the Players should be considering as they get set to haggle over money. Also, is Jonathan India the best Cincinnati Reds player for the foreseeable future?
With the Collective Bargaining Agreement set to expire on December 1st, the owners and the player of MLB are getting set for a battle. Amidst all the posturing and bickering, one thing cannot be forgotten: the fans. With baseball's tenuous position amongst the major professional sports in America, a prolonged lockout could be damning.
Tonight the NL Rookie of the Year Award winner (among others) will be announced. It seems intuitive that Jonathan India will take home the hardware, but it's not guaranteed. Dylan Carlosn and Trevor Rogers have an argument.
And who is the best Cincinnati Red for the foreseeable future? Considering all avenues of hitting, fielding, running, health, marketability, and so on, is it Jonathan India? Is it Jesse Winker? Is it Luis Castillo? Or who is it? Jeff gives you his take.
