Victori Violet traverses many worlds with a sly grin, doing expressive performance on a professional level along the way. The guys chat with Victori, longtime 1980 friend and participant in Lauren Kilb's LENS Burning Man artpiece (see episode 2), about the journey, training everyday people to model like pros, and making a living out of your passion

Secrets from the Fantasy Fun Farm of Tracey Moloney
Location 1980 Podcast
06/24/24 • 58 min
Hailing from New York, cutting her teeth in San Francisco, and making SoCal her home, Tracey’s art practice includes large scale murals, traditional fine art painting, and gallery operation. After schooling in graphic design, she decided to go into art production for herself and never stepped foot in an ad agency. She continues to this day, with an approach to life that focuses on simple substance rather than the complex superficiality that is so commonly found in the world. If you want to work with her, don’t send a text – get on the horn and have a conversation!

Interactive, Reflective, and BIG Art with Lauren Kilb
Location 1980 Podcast
10/04/23 • 102 min
In this episode the guys sit down with Lauren Kilb, longtime Location 1980 artist whose specialty is interactive art: pieces that once built, are only truly complete when the audience participates in what the piece has set up. In this way, the piece is not a static thing but a context for a conversation to take place between participants and artist, or participants and each other. Those who engage with the piece are elevated from mere spectators and become creators themselves. They have involvement and essentially choice rather than detached viewership. The piece gains an infinity, because the experience of it is as endlessly varietal as the people who engage with it, and simultaneously a deep personality as each person's involvement make their experience inimitably their own.

Lauren Kilb has traveled the world and created large-scale, interactive art pieces including at the black rock playa for Burning Man. She and her husband were artists in residence at 1980 for five years.

Brief History of OC's Best Kept Secret
Location 1980 Podcast
07/28/23 • 106 min
Hosts Jesse Fortune and Erik Ringman introduce the world to Location 1980, an art collective with a decade plus history hidden in the center of Orange County, California. "The last four letters of artwork, aren't play," says Fortune, weaving together a rigorous, get-it-done discipline and a flowing, felt creativity. They illuminate a thin slice of the enormous history here, where countless events have been thrown, hundreds of artists from around the globe have ushered through, and one of the Southland's longest continuous figure drawing workshops is still hosted.

Holographic Horizons
Location 1980 Podcast
02/22/24 • 54 min
In this episode the guys chat with Jim Trolinger whose résumé read longer than a CVS receipt. He has made artwork since childhood, and pursued a degree in engineering physics, ascending to doctorate level at a prime time to be amongst the nascent holographers of the world. He eventually founded his own holography company, Metrolaser, and along the way has never stopped making art. He calls it a way of staying calm and sharp. With Location 1980 since the start, Jim has spearheaded many plein air painting adventures to unique desert locations, created some inventive multimedia figure drawing workshops, and helped us publish detailed books chronicling these endeavours and the work that goes into them

From Muse to Master: An Angel Purging the Dæmons - Katya
Location 1980 Podcast
07/26/24 • 75 min
Katya began practicing art later in life, first modeling for figure drawing sessions and then attending as well. Eventually pursuing a full studio practice, she elevated to a level of fantastically expressive work in a very short time. Much of her work focuses on figures and bodies that are highly distorted and exaggerated, often portraying dark, anxious, and uncomfortable themes such as isolation, anxiety, and the sense of performance in daily life. In a Jungian way, by not hiding from the darkness she is able to move with light.

Extreme Adventures with a Maverick Artist
Location 1980 Podcast
05/13/24 • 108 min
Today the guys chat with an old friend of Location 1980, Bert Esenherz. He was doing out-of-the-box feats that cannot be classified as performance art, comedy, or improv alone, decades before broadband and social media made this kind of thing commonplace. Many of his events are truly art for art's sake, and evidence mastery of the art of living: that is to say, demonstrating (and testing) just how far this thing called life can be taken. This is all, of course, in addition to his skills as a painter, set builder, producer, and videographer. Bert tells his stories so casually, it's almost easy to miss how extraordinary they are! One of the pod's wildest guests so far.
Only a sliver of his exploits are covered in this episode, check out his website for more.
