Living in Santa Barbara

One of the best things about living in Santa Barbara is the incredible access we have to the film industry through the Santa Barbara Cinema Society. As members, we get to see films before they’re released, attend exclusive Q&As with filmmakers, and even meet them in intimate settings—something nearly impossible elsewhere but effortless here.

In this episode, I’m joined by fellow Cinema Society members Mahil and Robert to discuss some of the standout films we’ve seen at recent screenings and share our thoughts on this year’s Oscar contenders. From early predictions to behind-the-scenes insights, we’re bringing you an insider’s take on the movies generating the most buzz.

Let’s dive in!

42. Living in Santa Barbara - World Famous Uni & California's Trailblazing Stephanie Mutz

Uni is often described as an acquired taste, but for those who appreciate it, it's a true delicacy. Santa Barbara is renowned for producing some of the finest uni in the world and you can find it locally, but it is also shipped across the country and internationally, earning a spot in the top kitchens around the globe. Harvesting this prized delicacy is not easy, it's sustainably hand harvested by divers around the Channel Islands, most of whom are men.

However, one remarkable exception is Stephanie Mutz, California's only female sea urchin diver. If you've savored uni at a fine dining in California, there's a good chance Stephanie harvested it and delivered it straight to the chef. Tune in to find out more about this delicacy and learn more about Stephanie.

44. Living in Santa Barbara - Regenerating the Future: White Buffalo Land Trust on Healing the Land

The White Buffalo is a sacred symbol in Native American culture representing hope, renewal, and a balanced relationship between humans and nature. Today, it reminds us of our responsibility to take care of the planet and ourselves. By following its message, we can make more sustainable choices, recognize how everything is connected, and work toward a healthier future for all.

In this episode, we talk to Jesse and Ana Smith of White Buffalo Land Trust, a Santa Barbara based nonprofit dedicated to restoring ecosystems and building sustainable food systems through regenerative agriculture. Their mission is to create farming methods that benefit the environment, support local and global communities, and inspire people to take part in the healing of both the land and society.
