The Lumineers
Live on KEXP
04/12/22 • 22 min
Ten years after John Richards declared “Ho Hey” the best song of 2012 and bombarded the KEXP airwaves with it for an entire week, The Lumineers returned (virtually) to KEXP. The band, led by Wesley Schultz and Jeremiah Fraites, chat with Richards about the fateful moment that Richards pressed play on the CD demo the duo mailed to him before playing songs off their new fuzzy folk record Brightside.

Jason Isbell
Live on KEXP
05/17/22 • 26 min
For Live on KEXP, Troy Nelson attempts to condense the massive life and career of Southern rocker Jason Isbell. His is a story that deserves much more than the time available here but his brief conversation with Cheryl Waters is an illuminating peek into the mind of the four-time Grammy winner, who’s still greatly enjoying the art of making music.

Rell Be Free [Performance & Interview Only]
Live on KEXP
12/13/22 • 35 min
South Seattle-based musician/educator/entrepreneur Jerrell Davis makes laid-back hip hop under the name Rell Be Free. For his KEXP session, Davis brought in a number of musicians from Mead Streat studios, the South Seattle recording studio he runs alongside a bevy of important local artists. In this episode, we hear a bit about the studio's influence on the community and Davis’ intentions for his art before he and his cohorts jump into four songs from his latest album Sow What? (Phase 3).

Widowspeak
Live on KEXP
12/06/22 • 22 min
Indie rockers and former Tacoma locals Widowspeak released their sixth studio album The Jacket in Spring 2022 as a semi-concept album loosely telling the story a chain stitcher turned New York rocker. Vocalist Molly Hamilton relayed to Cheryl Waters in this episode of Live on KEXP the story behind the album before launching into four dreamy tracks off the record as well as professing their love for radio (which we don’t mind one bit).

Zeta
Live on KEXP
08/15/23 • 29 min
On the show this time, it’s the melodic psych-punk-pop of Zeta.
For our 400th episode of Live On KEXP, in the spirit of music discovery - we present a brilliant band originally from Venezuela. Zeta plays freely, incorporating psychedelic post-rock, reggae, experimental jazz, cumbia, punk - even emo and mambo. They patiently seek catharsis through the practice of collective ritual. Extremely hard rockin' collective ritual. Their latest album is “Todo Bailarlo” released on Skeletal Lightning in 2022.

Elephant Gym [Performance & Interview Only]
Live on KEXP
06/11/24 • 21 min
On the show this time, it's the low-end chaotic pattern-math of Taiwan’s Elephant Gym.
Elephant Gym is siblings KT and Tell Chang on bass and guitar, and drummer Chia-Chin Tu. They met in high school, forming the band in 2012. They say the “elephant” refers to their emphasized agile bass guitar, and the “gym” refers to the physical and mental workout that is Math-Rock. Their music is a delicate balance of jazz, funk, and classical elements, unafraid to venture into catchy pop, or the shreddingest of shredding math-rock riffs. Sometimes the members of the band are counting in different time signatures. Simultaneously... YES. It’s surprisingly accessible given its complexity, due to an openness to the arrangements and their gorgeous tonal palette. Their latest albums are 'Dreams' and 'World,' both available through Topshelf Records.

Spirit Award
Live on KEXP
11/14/23 • 29 min
On the show this time, it’s the new motorik psych-pop of Seattle’s own Spirit Award.
Spirit Award is the creative project of singer / guitarist Daniel Lyon. He combines catchy energetic post-punk psych-pop with pensive analytical lyrics, arriving at a surprisingly loving and accessible sound, considering the weight of the content. His all star cast of collaborators includes co-producer Trevor Spencer, bassist Chris Jordan and drummer Andrew King. Their latest album 'The Fear' is available on Share It Music.
