On this episode, Gord is joined by Zitkato, one of the hosts of Bands of Turtle Island to begin a discussion on Decolonization.
In this first part, Zitkato leads us through how diversity of Indigenous People is understood outside of settler concepts of blood quantum and institutional labelling. We learn how Indigenous identity is shaped by the experience of colonization but not merely defined by dispossession.
Zitkato and Gord take a conversational approach to their dialogue, covering points on how contemporary media and historical accounts are interwoven with the state of progress in a society, and no amount of making movies out of oppressed peoples’ experiences will change things.
Finally, the discussion covers how dialectics and oral histories work in similar ways to help understand the world and our relationship with it.
Little Red School House is committed to taking part in Decolonization and our first step is to start with us.
