Line Drunk - North By Northwest
play

07/28/20 • 66 min

This week we discussed the Alfred Hitchcock classic, North By Northwest starring Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint from 1959. This thriller is know for the iconic crop duster scene you've seen everywhere. It is listed as one of AFI's Top 100 Films of all time, AFI's Top Ten Mysteries, AFI's Top 100 Thrills as well as in 1,001 Movies You Must See Before You Die by Steven Schneider. Needless to say, this is a must see film. I think nowadays too many people ignore the classics because they are black and white and they don't have the technology they have today, but honestly so many films stand the test of time, there's a reason there are so many classics on top lists. Also, this is an Alfred Hitchcock film, I mean he brought us Psycho, The Birds, Rear Window, To Catch a Thief, Vertigo, Rebecca, Marnie, The Trouble with Harry, Dial M for Murder, and so many more. It's a shame that it ends up being like pulling teeth to get younger generations to watch something made before the 90s, let alone before the 2000s. Although some of them seem to know quotes very well, but couldn't tell you anything else.

North by Northwest was written by Ernest Lehman who did other classics like West Side Story, Sabrina, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Hello, Dolly!, and The Sound of Music. This man clearly knew what he was doing. Hitchcock also knows how to cast for his films. We have Cary Grant who did such films as The Philadelphia Story, Bringing Up Baby, To Catch a Thief, Charade, Arsenic and Old Lace and countless others. Eva Marie Saint who was in On the Waterfront, Superman Returns, and Winter's Tale. Also James Mason (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, A Star is Born 1954 version), Jessie Royce Landis (To Catch a Thief), Leo G. Carroll (Strangers on a Train, The Parent Trap, Rebecca, Spellbound, A Christmas Carol), Josephine Hutchinson (The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn), Philip Ofer (The Ghost and Mr. Chicken), Martin Landau (Mission Impossible series, Sleepy Hollow, Treasure Island), and Edward Platt (Get Smart, Pollyanna, Rebel Without a Cause).

20th Century Limited Cocktail:

This was a cocktail created by a British bartender named C.A. Tuck in 1937, it was named in honor of the Twentieth Century Limited train which ran between New York City and Chicago from 1902 until 1967.

  • 3/4 oz Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 oz Creme de Cacao (Godiva was used for this episode)
  • 3/4 oz Kina Lillet or Lillet Blanc (Vermouth was used for this episode, similar tasting notes)
  • 1 1/2 London Dry Gin
  • Shake over ice and double strain into a coup glass. Garnish with a twist of lemon.

North by Northwest Cocktail (Drinks mentioned in the film):

  • Martini
  • Large glass of Bourbon
  • Gibson (Fill a shaker with ice, then add gin and vermouth. Stir well, then strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with an onion.)
  • Scotch

Drinking Game:

  • Whenever a character gets inside a vehicle
  • If and when alcohol is mentioned
  • When Mr. Thornhill insults someone
  • Finish your drink when Mr. Thornhill is forced to finish his

So grab a Gibson, sit down, kick back and relax while we discuss North by Northwest.

This week's episode is the season finale! I couldn't think of a better way to end my first season than to have Ms. Moviefone herself, Grae Drake as my guest. She chose to chat about the much anticipated sequel to The Kissing Booth, creatively titled, The Kissing Booth 2. We also chat about life, high school, dating, past experiences with celebs and more. Grae is a wonderful human being and just fun, plus she has an amazing and contagious laugh. Check her out on moviefone.com, on Youtube, GraeDrake.com, and weekly sharing reviews on The Kidd Kraddick Morning Show.

If you haven't seen the first film, it is available on Netflix and sets the tone for this film. Elle has to juggle a long-distance relationship with Noah, including being jealous of a new friend, while building a new friendship with the new guy in school and college applications. Starring Joey King (The Act, Slender Man), Joel Courtney (Super 8, F*&% The Prom), Jacob Elordi (Euphoria, The Mortuary Collection), Molly Ringwald (and yes, I mistakenly said Raising Expectations instead of The Secret Life of the American Teenager, but she's also been in many 80's classics including The Breakfast Club), Taylor Zakhar Perez (Cruel Intentions TV movie, Alpha House), Maisie Richardson-Sellers (DC's Legends of Tomorrow), and Megan Young (The Dating Game Killer). It was written by Beth Reekles (who wrote the book), Jay S. Arnold, and Vince Marcello, who also directed both films. While this sequel isn't as good as the first, it's still cute and Joey King is wonderful.

Kiss on the Lips:

  • 1 1/2 ounces of Peach Schnapps
  • 5 ounces frozen mango chunks
  • 1 tablespoon of Grenadine
  • 2 cups crushed ice

Drinking Game:

  • Anyone says "Noah"
  • Anyone mentions the "Kissing Booth"
  • There's narration
  • A friendship rule is listed
  • An arcade game is played
  • Anyone kisses
  • Optional Extreme Version: Anyone says "Elle"

WE MADE IT TO SEASON TWO! When I started this podcast I did it for me, and still am, but I also wasn't sure how many episodes I would be able to reach, or how many listens I'd have, or who would be joining me on the episodes. I have loved making this podcast and hope that my listeners are enjoying it. Please feel free to email me at [email protected] or reach out on Twitter or Instagram @Line_Drunk if you'd like to be a guest, know someone that would love to be a part of an episode or two, or just want me to do an episode on a certain movie or tv episode. I think I will have great things for the future of Line Drunk and more celebrity guest.....

Speaking of which, on the season two premier I am joined by Amos Crawley and his wife Cady, I have actually mentioned him before during Goosebumps The Haunted Mask episodes. You have probably seen him in Night of The Twisters, Billy Madison, or Rent-a-Kid and soon you can see him in The Oak Room. He and his wife were wonderful to have on the podcast and great to chat with, they are welcome back any time. We had gone back and forth trying to find a film to discuss and ended up on the 80's cult classic, Heathers. This film stars Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, Shannen Doherty among an amazing cast. If you haven't seen this film, I highly recommend it. It is available to watch on Prime, or I'm sure you can find a copy at a big retail chain. This film is like the original Mean Girls, but darker, instead of Cady thinking about such awful things, Veronica and J.D. actually do them. So grab a cocktail, relax, and enjoy this episode.

Big Blue Freeze (cinemasips.com):

  • 3/4 oz Rum
  • 3/4 oz Blue Curaçao
  • 3/4 oz Creme de Coconut
  • 2 oz Pineapple Juice
  • Combine all ingredients in a shaker filled with ice and shake until chilled. Fill a mug 3/4 full of crushed ice and pour mixture over top.

Drinking Game (medium.com):

Sip:

  • A Heather says "Heather"
  • Weird, breath-y synth music accompanies a slow motion shot.
  • Veronica is sarcastic.
  • The Red Scrunchie is prominently displayed in a shot.
  • Christian Slater's Jack Nicholson impression is embarrassingly obvious.
  • You admire an article of clothing on screen.

Drink:

  • Heather Chandler uses a strange turn of phrase.
  • Anyone struggles with food or drink.
  • "Veronica" is used as a single-word statement (question, exclamation).
  • Veronica feigns having a conscience before giving into peer pressure.
  • A character attempts suicide.
  • Anyone says "Oh the humanity!"
  • BIG FUN is on screen.

Finish your drink:

  • Someone looks dead.
  • A Person of Colour speaks on screen. (Is Ohio really this white? Really?)

Extra Game:

  • Cut to a scene in a room/house where the coulor of the decor matches the representative color of a character (the Chandler's red=accent kitchen, Heather's yellow bedroom, etc.): everyone assembled has to say "corn nuts". Last person to do it refills all cups (or gets more ice from the kitchen or whatever you want).

We've made it to episode two of season two!!! This week we discuss Mr. & Mrs. Smith with my friends as they celebrated their anniversary by doing a podcast episode. This was a fun episode to record and it provided me with great sound bytes.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as a bored married couple that is surprised to discover that they are both assassins hired to kill each other. It's just a fun action thriller with a lot of guns and explosions to enjoy. Gives you a new take on S&M, just kidding. This film also stars Adam Brody, Vince Vaughn, and Kerry Washington among others. Simon Kinberg is the writer and this was actually his thesis for his Masters in Fine Arts, he has also written films such as X-Men: The Last Stand, Sherlock Holmes, and Fantastic Four. Doug Liman, who has also directed Swingers, The Bourne Identity, and American Made, directed this one. Grab a cocktail or two, sit back and relax as we discuss Mr. & Mrs. Smith.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith:

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 oz of mango liqueur
  • 1/2 oz of triple sec
  • 1/2 oz of cognac

Instructions:

  • Pour into shaker
  • Fill the shaker with ice and shake
  • Strain into a shot glass
  • Then pour 1.5 oz of champagne into another shot glass and drink in any order you wish

Drinking Game (moviedrinkinggame.com):

Take a sip when:

  • A gun is drawn
  • Alcohol is consumed
  • Anybody uses a knife to slice something or attack someone
  • Eddie mentions his mom
  • Explosion on screen

Finish drink when:

  • John is punched in the balls
  • Jane says it was "just a little bomb"

Feeling hardcore:

  • Jane or John are on a phone call
  • John is unprofessional

Take a sip whenever...

  • Someone says “James” or “Bond” (Yes this would mean 3 drinks for the phrase “Name’s Bond, James Bond”)

  • Bond uses one of his gadgets given to him by Q (or anyone else at the agency)
  • Someone gets shot
  • Someone falls crashes
  • Bond gets into his over-the-top car
  • Anyone on screen sips alcoholDrink twice if it’s a shaken Martini

Take a huge chug whenever...

  • There’s a sex scene
  • A chase scene starts

Finish your drink whenever...

  • Bond is successfully captured. There’s a bit of a grey area in some films on if he was successfully captured, so let’s just say any time he is taken somewhere at gunpoint, put in handcuffs, or ends up in a cell.

Hayride to Hell is about how a small town farmer exacts his bloody revenge on unscrupulous town folk who try to steal his land.
