“That saved my life. I mean, me being laid off saved my life.”

From losing her job to finding her greater purpose, Ellen Yao knows that God has been at work in her life. After immigrating from South Korea and growing up in church, surrounded by Christian friends and family, Ellen tried to find her own way and identity as a young adult. But everything she tried, from partying to climbing the corporate ladder, left her feeling empty inside. That prompted a desperate prayer from Ellen, asking God to show up and prove He was real. And He did, in a way that Ellen never could have expected. After being laid off, she gave her life to Jesus, went back to school, met her husband, and found herself on an adventure of a lifetime, her very first trip, to Iraq in the middle of war with ISIS. This is an incredible experience you’ll have to hear to believe.

2:45 – Ellen’s family immigrates to the US from South Korea and converts to Christianity

6:43 – In college Ellen drifted away from church in pursuit of her own identity and worldview

10:45 – Ellen gets into “ricing” cars and partying, and then climbs the “corporate ladder” and pursues “stable life”

12:51 – Ellen’s prayer for God to show up leads to several huge changes in her life

19:18 – During the war with ISIS in Iraq Ellen feels called by God to go there

22:43 – Memories of going to Iraq and the launch of her new “life of purpose”

29:31 –Ellen’s greater purpose in this season

Even if you are a person of faith, dealing with setbacks and overcoming obstacles can become overwhelming at times. It is reassuring to know however that God is more powerful than any circumstances and will provide all the help you need if you just ask Him. This is something today’s guest can also attest to.

Danny Skaggs is the founder of Pharmacy Unlimited. Limitless Spirit - Episode 95: Allowing God to redeem your past
play

08/16/22 • 39 min

Share your thoughts

When you’re in a difficult season in life, it can be hard to recognize that God is still working in your life. Letting go of the pain and trauma can become a lifelong battle. It does not have to be, however.
This week, our host Helen Todd speaks with Tammarra Kirkland, an experienced social worker, an adjunct professor at Liberty University, and a missionary.

As a child, Tammarra’s mother and stepfather were drug addicts, and her father was a drug-dealer. But amid all the crime and drugs, the real danger to Tammarra was growing up without feeling loved and cared for by her parents. As an adult, Tammarra fell into drug use, lived with unresolved trauma, and nearly joined Islam as a solution to her problems. But after a Christian co-worker encouraged her to attend church, Tammarra slowly began to pursue God and allow Him to heal her brokenness.

After finding healing and calling in Christ, Tammarra spent 18 years helping the hurting people as a social worker for the State of New Jersey, and in our recent mission trip to Moldova, she was able to share her testimony of redemption from drugs with a group of men at a drug rehab facility. In this episode, you’ll hear more about Tammarra’s story and how God is using her to change the lives of others.

4:50 - Growing up in difficult circumstances

7:35 - Living in danger

9:35 - How trauma changed Tammarra’s life, and how she deals with it now

15:55 - Nearly converting to Islam

23:35 - How God uses Tammarra to change lives

32:00 - The advice that Tammarra has to allow God to redeem your past

Sometimes God has a calling on our lives that we don’t recognize and perhaps don’t want. In His infinite love God rearranges our lives to bring this calling to surface, make it very clear. Then we have a choice to accept or reject it.

In this episode our host Helen Todd interviews LeAnn Remmers who at a very early age discovered her talent for signing and dreamt of a career as a singer. She had a promising start with the opportunities to pursue record labels and to go on tours. But at 19 years old, she found out that she had vocal damage that would require surgery and at least a year without singing, which could end her musical career. It seemed like her dream was gone and the pain of losing it caused her to drift away from God.

LeAnn tells her story and shares how God reached out to her to show her that He had different plans for her life and showed her that His calling gave her everything she desired. You’ll hear her entire story in this episode of the Limitless Spirit Podcast.

In John 16, verse 33, Jesus reminds us that we will have trouble in this world, but He encourages us to take heart because He has overcome the world. Sometimes troubles become even deeper after we accept Christ.

In this episode, our host Helen Todd speaks with Tony Stephens, whose story shows us that we can have peace in Christ even when we go through trials. Tony was raised in church but dealt with anger and bitterness after losing both of his parents at a young age. But after deciding to return to church as an adult in a rocky marriage, he was encountered by God and baptized in the Holy Spirit. His trials wouldn’t end there but would only get worse. Just before being sent to Iraq in the special forces after 9/11, Tony lost his job, his wife filed for divorce, and he was homeless for a period. Learning how to deal with adversity and heal from bitterness and anger Tony discovered a practice that transformed his life. You’ll hear his entire story in this episode of the Limitless Spirit Podcast.

“I can’t do this... I can’t go through with this baptism.”

That’s what Carrie Ann Lewis told her boyfriend just days before her baptism into the Mormon church. She’d been having strange but meaningful dreams about her dad, a strong Christian who’d passed away years earlier, and that made her second guess the religious path she was on.

From that moment on, Carrie Ann’s life was never the same. She broke up with her boyfriend and left the Mormon church. She also began a journey to find the truth about God, and share His love with the hurting people. She has a massive social media outreach where she shares daily devotionals and more recently has discovered a calling to overseas missions.
Today, she’s living out her greater purpose of loving people like Christ and following His calling to the Great Commission. She’ll share more about it on this episode of Limitless Spirit.

2:50 – The influence of Carrie Ann’s dad on her faith and life, and his early death from cancer

6:02 – Carrie Ann’s experiences with Mormonism

11:20 – Carrie Ann begins to have dreams about her dad in the days leading up to her Mormon baptism and starts to rethink if she was doing the right thing

13:44 – The beginning of her relationship with Jesus and transformation of her life

17:37 – How Carrie Ann began a ministry on social media during the pandemic

21:19 – Carrie Ann’s unusual call to missions

27:05 – Carrie Ann's first experience of sharing her story and witnessing miracles in Serbia

31:20 – Why Carrie Ann believes her greater purpose in life is to love people like Jesus did
