If you are listening to Like a Bigfoot for the first time, there's no better place to start than with one of these standout episodes. If you are a fan of the show, vote for your favorite Like a Bigfoot episode by adding your comments to the episode page.

Since we last spoke to Brady Manriquez (episode 1), he has lost 15 more pounds, overcame set-backs in the form of an emergency surgery, began pumping iron, and discovered the great form of exploration known as trail running. All this in preparation for his very first race- a 14.5 miler in the absolute breath-taking Monument Valley smack dab in the middle of the Arizona/Utah desert. In this episode we break down Brady's pre-race plan along with my own (I'm running the 50 mile Monument Valley ultra the same day), wax poetically about everything we know about Monument Valley, discuss ways to really make the most out of a big destination race, the origin of the name "Like a Bigfoot", and so much more! While you are listening to Brady's story, realize that a year ago he hadn't even dreamt of running one mile, not to mention running 14.5, let alone running 14.5 in a desert trail half marathon! His story is proof that you can accomplish whatever it is you want as long as you are consistently taking sustainable steps towards your goal. Although he's lost 75 pounds, his biggest benefit has been regaining strength, athleticism, and confidence. The dude is a status quo crusher by every definition of the term! Some would have continued down the path of "same old, same old", but Brady decided to set off on his own path and rediscover the control he has over his own health and therefore his own life. Thinking about that inspires me every SINGLE day. He represents the epitome of the "Like a Bigfoot" mindset. CONSISTENT HARD WORK + TIME = SUCCESS. Enjoy this week's episode! This week we are talking with Matthew Hengst about him and his girlfriend Jen's summer adventure paddling down the entire Mississippi River from it's Source in Minnesota to the sea down in Louisiana!! This one is EPIC!! Through their adventure they battled giant oil ships, river alligators, lightning storms, flooding campsites, and much much more!! As someone who grew up in a town on the banks of the Mississippi I was completely fascinated by Matthew's tales. This is pure adventure at it's core and it is such a unique experience that traveling down the river captures the imagination. It also shows how adventure let's you experience a place at a deep level. Matthew taught me things about the Mississippi that only one who has traversed it over months could know. It seemed like truly a beautiful if not often brutal experience! Enjoy!! Like a Bigfoot - #100: My Desert RATS Kokopelli 150 Race Report
play

07/05/18 • 117 min

This week’s episode is my race report from Gemini Adventures Desert RATS stage race. Desert RATS is a 6 day stage race on the Kokopelli Trail from Fruita, Colorado to Moab, Utah. This was one of my absolute favorite adventures I have ever experienced and I am extremely excited to share this race report for the special episode 100 of the podcast!! Throughout this episode, I recap the event to my buddy Brady Manriquez and share a few audio clips I took during various stages of the race. We talk about the incredible group of people involved, the power of supporting each other through hard times, the bizarre thoughts you get while running a long way, how the little things add up, and the power of having a WHY and running with intention. I hope you guys enjoy and take something away from this show. This one was not easy to record as it gets pretty personal, but I feel strongly that if it helps or encourages just one person get through a hard time it was absolutely worth it. Next week, I’m putting together a retrospective from fellow racers and crew. It’s gonna be awesome! This week's guest is ultrarunner, dad extraordinaire, beer lover, and Iowan Brad Dains. Brad is a midwesterner spreading awesomeness by helping introduce Iowans to the joys of ultrarunning. Specifically, we talk all about the Booneville Backyards Ultra, a race Brad co-directs. Booneville is a special race near Des Moines that allows runners to explore the beauty of my home state Iowa. It also is surprisingly challenging as the constant rolling hills and the extremely muddy "B Roads" suck the energy and motivation right out of you. Look at the cover of this week's episode or google B Roads to get an idea of how gnarly these things can get. We also get into Brad's training routine and how he balances running with raining 4 kids, his full time job, and coaching soccer. He shares a couple EXCELLENT tips. "Invisible training" where you train at such insanely early hours that your family hardly notices. And his super intense midwestern elevation training, aka a stair workout where he throws on a heavy backpack and walks up and down his 11 stairs over six hundred times! I hope you guys enjoy the episode. Wanted to thank you all so much for supporting the show!! If you want to help us out, be sure to subscribe and review on iTunes. Go get 'em this week!! This week we are continuing the tale of Shane Dowty's quest to coach in the world of college football. Over the course of starting this podcast my unofficial theme song has become "It's a Long Way to the Top, If You Wanna Rock n' Roll". The idea to accept that anything worth wanting in life is not instantaneous, instead taking patient consistent hard work to achieve. Shane's journey fascinates me because it is the embodiment of that philosophy. And really, when you start from the bottom, embracing the journey and becoming a sponge absorbing knowledge from various mentors is absolutely key. In 2009 Shane had the opportunity to work as a student assistant for the Iowa Hawkeyes, an experience that set him down this path. (Going to the Orange Bowl probably had something to do with hooking him!) In this episode we hear about the lessons Shane learned from his time spent at the absolute bottom of the coaching food chain, how he embraced the stoicism philosophy of legendary coach Kirk Ferentz, why you should be conscious of your principles and always be in alignment with your integrity, and a lot more! Shane was out here live in studio (aka my porch) and I just had the best time chatting with him. He currently is about to start his second season as an assistant coach for the Division 2 Missouri S & T Miners and I wish him the absolute best this year! This week's episode is ultrarunner Jen Tischler!!! I met Jen at the Booneville Backroads Ultra back in 2020 and ran many of my most difficult miles with her. It was 98 degrees, no shade, 50 miles into the day and we were drinking hot water and my brain was shutting down. Jen was the most positive person I had ever ran with and I'm truly not sure I would have made it had it not been for her optimism! In this episode, we talk about her recent outright victory at that same race! Jen also shares the story of the BRUTAL Florida Keys 100....which got insanely difficult... This is an awesome episode and I hope you all enjoy it!

This week I am very excited and honored to welcome back life long mountain athlete, endurance coach, adventure racer, ultrarunner, family man, and all around incredible human being Travis Macy!! He's on the show to share all sorts of stories, wisdom, and inspiration as part of Team Endure in the most recent Eco Challenge, the monumental multi-day adventure race across Fiji. Not only was this race epic in all sense of the word but it also holds a special place in his heart since he experienced it with his father Mark, a legendary veteran endurance racer who was recently diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. Watching Team Endure on Amazon's "World's Toughest Race" was emotional, touching, inspiring, and completely empowering. Travis and his dad have a special bond and it was really refreshing to these two and their team take on this adventure. They truly embrace the concept of endure, pushing forward with a positive attitude despite any obstacles thrown their way, both in racing and in life. Watching their race, listening to Travis, embracing the Ultra Mindset will leave you empowered and I sincerely hope that's what you take away from this podcast. Thanks for listening!! This week we are chatting with ultrarunners and race directors Alyx Luck and Billy Barnett! In this episode we hear about their respective journeys and how they came to find each other on Hawaii. Alyx shares lessons she learned through competitive body building, racing around the world, and coaching others in health and fitness. Billy and I chat about his teaching career, awesome places to trail run in his home state of Virginia, and why you should use running to simply go out and explore. We also dive into the new races they are directing, including the Mauna Kea 50 Miler, the Time for Wine 6Hr race, and the Under the Moon Ultra which takes runners completely across the Big Island through the middle of the night. I really enjoyed chatting with Alyx and Billy and hope you guys love the episode as much as I do! "We are meant to seek, engage, be filled up with wisdom from sources far more attuned to the truth than ourselves" - Paul Scheuring, The Far Shore Paul Scheuring is an author, a filmmaker, a show runner, and a screenwriter. More importantly, Paul is my friend, a mentor, a smart-guy-I-talk-to-in-order-to-make-sense-of-the-world, a fellow adventurer, a dude who likes to surf, a father, and someone who encourages folks to chase their dreams! In this episode we dive into a deep discussion about creativity and the process of how one expresses themselves. We base this chat around his novel "The Far Shore", a deeply meaningful novel Paul wrote a few years back. I've always been a fan of Paul as a person but now that I've read a couple things he has written I'm a HUGE fan of Paul as a writer!! I HIGHLY recommend this book!! "Some fundamental thing drives us, and we cannot catch a direct glimpse of it. But it must be an unease, for if it was anything otherwise, a calmness, a contentment, we would not search so furiously as a species for an answer to it." This week we are chatting with Angus Peacock, the executive director of Rugby Colorado, lifelong rugby player, and Gobi March Stage Race finisher. Angus was a high level international rugby player who became coach of the Shanghai rugby squad before moving to Colorado where he is setting up a foundation for the sport in America. He also competed in the 2010 Gobi March, a weeklong ultraendurance stage race across China. Our conversation touches on many important topics: What was his rugby journey like and how did he grow along the way? What is it about Rugby that promotes so much passion in people? How did he transform a team composed of multiple cultures and languages into champions? What can we do to get more people to connect to it in America? What did he discover through pushing himself, untrained, through the desert? How did the camp respond to a tragic death during the race? Those are our topics today- Rugby and Ultrarunning. Two of my absolute favorite things in the world! This is a great one!! I cannot wait for you to listen!
