O Camiño dos Faros, or The Lighthouse Way, is a 125-mile hiking route in Galicia in the northwest part of Spain. The route passes nine lighthouses, as well as forts, fishing villages, beaches, and important landmarks in the portion of the coast known as A Costa da Morte. National Geographic called the Lighthouse Way an under-the-radar gem, and The Telegraph called it “one of the 50 best adventure vacations in the world.” The Lighthouse Way is divided into eight sections, with an average hiking time of nine hours per section, allowing for time to stop along the way for meals and photos. The route is steep in places and is considered of medium difficulty. A view on O Camiño dos Faros The organization known as the Association of O Camiño dos Faros was created with one goal: to make O Camiño dos Faros a reality and to preserve the hiking route for people to experience, with maximum respect for nature. The guest in this episode, Cristina Alonso, is the president of the Association of O Camiño dos Faros. She also has a personal connection to lighthouses, as the daughter of lighthouse keepers. The island group’s name, which means “The Lord’s Prayer,” is said to come from the tradition that mariners would recite the Lord’s Prayer as they negotiated their way around the dangerous reefs in the vicinity. The 105-foot-tall cast-iron lighthouse on one of the islands was constructed in 1868 during a period of intensive lighthouse building in Sweden. Pater Noster Lighthouse Since last year, Pater Noster Lighthouse has been operated as a small hotel. The facilities include rooms with a sea view, a restaurant, and three boathouses for dinner and conferences. The hotel on Pater Noster was awarded the 40th annual Gold Key Award for Excellence in Hospitality Design. The lighthouse was moved to shore for restoration in 2002. In this photo it's being returned to the island in 2007. Wikimedia Commons photo by Rolf Broberg. Erik Nissen Johansen is originally from Norway. He is the founder and creative director of Stylt Trampoli, a multi-award winning hospitality design company. Erik Nissen Johansen (Courtesy of Stylt) This is the first of two episodes about the Pater Noster Lighthouse; the second will be posted on Wednesday, April 28. Earlier this year, the nearby film festival in Gothenberg awarded a weeklong stay at the lighthouse hotel to Lisa Enroth, a nurse. Linda watched all the films in the festival while at the lighthouse. Jonas Holmberg, artistic director of the film festival, and Lisa Enroth will be the guests in episode 116. You can listen to the podcast with this player:

Light Hearted - Light Hearted ep 283 – Sea Girt, New Jersey
play

06/23/24 • 43 min

Sea Girt Lighthouse Before Sea Girt Light was established in 1896, there was a long stretch of more than 38 miles with no lighthouses on the New Jersey coast from the Navesink Twin Lights south to Barnegat Light. In addition to helping coastal maritime traffic, the lighthouse served to aid mariners entering Sea Girt Inlet and Wreck Pond. The design of Sea Girt Lighthouse is unusual for the New Jersey coast. It consists of a square, red brick tower rising 44 feet and attached to a keeper’s dwelling. Jude Meehan After World War II, an automatic light was mounted on top of the tower and the lighthouse was decommissioned. By 1980, the building was in a deteriorated state and was closed. An organization called the Sea Girt Citizens Committee was formed to save the lighthouse, and today it's open to the public. Our guest today is Jude Meehan, who is the president of the Sea Girt Citizens Committee. Co-hosting this episode are Heather Porter and her daughter, 11-year-old Guinevere, of Kentucky. Heather and Guin discuss their recent visit to New England to see lighthouses, including Portland Head, Nubble, and Goat Island in Kennebunkport, Maine. It’s weathered many storms but it’s now in need of help. He has been a volunteer at Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse for several years. As the preservation foreman, he is actively involved in the bidding and specification preparation for the rehabilitation of the lighthouse, as well as coordinating volunteer schedules and tasks. The first act passed by the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, on October 2, 1758, authorized the lighthouse. It was paid for by a tax on vessels entering Halifax Harbour. The station was automated and destaffed in 1988. Of three keepers’ houses built in the 1960s, one was demolished for salvage in 1989 and another was burned down in 2007. Sambro Lighthouse, Nova Scotia, Canada. Photo by Bob Trapani, Jr. Joe Flemming The Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society succeeded in having the lighthouse designated as a classified federal heritage building in 1996. Two years later, the tower was reshingled and repainted. In 2008, more restoration work was completed and a solar power system was installed. Another major restoration project was carried out in 2016. A new local nonprofit organization has also been formed to preserve the lighthouse: the Sambro Island Lighthouse Heritage Society. Chris Mills served as a lighthouse keeper in Canada for nine years at 11 light stations on both coasts. (Courtesy of Chris Mills) Joe Flemming, who lives in Ketch Harbour, Nova Scotia, is a past president of the Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society, and he has played a large role in the preservation of Sambro Lighthouse.
