Life in Paradise on a Shoestring - The Science of Happiness Part 8: How to Find Your People
play

10/26/22 • 13 min

For a good life, find your people and nurture strong relationships.
"In other words, make friends with individuals. The other side of the individualistic coin: Find your people."
I grew up in the United States and, like many Americans, I was taught that my country was the best in the world. I never questioned this belief until I went to college and studied anthropology. I learned about ethnocentrism, the belief that one's own culture is superior to all others. After traveling around the world, I realized that Americans are some of the worst offenders when it comes to ethnocentrism.
In this episode, you will learn the following:
1) The Harvard Study of Adult Development, which has followed people from their teenage years into old age, has revealed insights about what makes up a life well-lived.
2) Dr. Robert Waldinger, MD, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard and the current head of the study, has learned which adults turn out happy and why.
3) The study has found that happy people avoid toxic tribalism, or the tendency to view members of other groups as inferior.

Do you want to live a fuller and more adventurous life after retirement? Do you know what comes next after the sale of a business you love? In this episode, you will learn: 1. What it's like to sell a business overseas; 2. The joys of retiring or semi-retiring to a life of travel and adventure; 3. What it's like to be a volunteer for a turtle conservation effort - or manage it.
"The opportunity to do it here where it's so gorgeous and the water is warm and it's really special."
Jim Silver is a former business owner and real estate broker who has turned his attention to volunteerism, writing, music and photography in retirement. He is an avid traveler and adventurer, and spends his time exploring the world and enjoys sharing his stories with others.
Jim Silver was our guest on Episode 19 of the Overseas Life Redesign Podcast, where he talked about living a good life and while running a dream dive business. He has since sold his business and is now doing fun things that bring him purpose and meaning. He recently took a trip to Cozumel to dive and do underwater photography for fun. He also has some book projects that he is working on.
After five years of working in a dive business in Mexico, he decided to sell the business. He was a PADI Dive Master/Instructor. The business requires a boat and requires a lot of time and effort. It's a business that requires employees, insurance, taxes and a sole proprietor.
This year the turtle farm in Isla Mujeres, Mexico was taken back by the government, probably due to mismanagement. The new director of environment and ecology needed volunteers to help with the conservation efforts previously managed by the Tortuga Farm. Jim has been diving with the turtles during mating season off the south tip of the island for eight years and has been taking pictures of them turtles are an endangered species in Mexico they lay a lot of eggs on the beaches. He realized they needed a lot of help, particularly someone to to manage the effort. Jim "picked up the clipboard" and is so glad he did.

FIRE stands for, financial independence retire early. The movement started a little over a decade ago, some books were written about the concept and then the millennials really climbed onboard. A big part of it is that people are really frustrated - that has lead to The Great Resignation. We just don’t want to have to work at a job (they hate) forever and never be able to retire. There are a lot of factors that have made it popular, but, as you look closer at the core philosophies, for most people, it's probably not going to work.

Dawn strongly disagrees with a lot of the FIRE's underlying principles. In this episode she unpacks the FIRE movement, why it's problematic. Dawn explains the first part of her ESCAPE Wealth Philosophy - a much better philosophy and strategy in her opinion.

Do you make an effort to educate yourself, instead of simply relying one "experts". Do your trusted advisors have the lifestyle you want? Or are they simply on the treadmill next to you, trying to win the rat race?

Financial Planners are typically laser focused on money, financial assets & financial planning, but that is at best only 25% of the retirement planning process. Financial Planners are not trained to help clients transition to a life of significance beyond work life, career identity. What can you do? Where can you turn for help with the other 75% of your life? We have some ideas.
