Bruce Deitrick Price

Savvy, practical insights on where our Education Establishment went wrong and how most schools can be improved.LET'S FIX EDUCATION explains the many dysfunctional theories and methods operating within our schools. This podcast is intended for parents, teachers, and community leaders who want education reform.

Each week, LET'S FIX EDUCATION examines another problem in our public schools, such as: Constructivism. Learning styles. Sight-words. No memorization. Cooperative learning. Prior knowledge. Reform math. The dilution of knowledge. Common Core. Project-based learning. Student-centered, etc. In fact, there are DOZENS of counterproductive learning and teaching theories, all made worse by ideological motives.

Bio: Bruce Deitrick Price is a novelist, artist, and education reformer. He has analyzed the problems in education for more than 30 years. Price is the author of "Saving K-12: What happened to our public schools? How do we fix them?" (190 pages) His main education site is Improve-Education.org. For more information about book and author, visit Lit4u.com. Newest novels are "Frankie" (about a harmless robot) and "The Boy Who Saves The World" (about a boy who saves the world).

"Bruce Price’s SAVING K-12 is a MUST read! It is precise, concise and powerful. Action is required...for the sake of our children, our grandchildren and the future of the American Republic!” Robert W. Sweet, Jr., long-time President of The National Right to Read Foundation

Episode 183: Celebrate the New Year with my Most Popular Podcast

Wed., Jan. 1, 2025

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let's Fix Education has been going strong for more than three years, and during all that time one episode was far and away the crowd favorite by a factor of 100.

Episode 86: Super Bowl LVII, the National Anthem, Chris Stapleton: RESPECT offered some of the most popular things in American culture, the Super Bowl, a famous country star singing the Star-Spangled Banner at halftime, and a general hurrah for patriotism.

The episode also had three outstanding links. There's a link to Stapleton’s performance, which is outstanding. There's a second link to a guy who is obviously a music director and he mentions technical details that I thought many people would appreciate. The third link tells the great story about the War of 1812 and the creation of our national anthem, narrated by Ronald Reagan.

So you have a great array of valuable information with the secret message, hey, if our schools were doing a good job, you would already know all this stuff, but my bet is that most people do not.

I got so many views because people passed the link around, which is essential for a niche site like this. Let's Fix Education is for people who care about the schools and understand some of the battles raging since the 1950s: the reading wars, the math wars, the cultural literacy wars, and the pervasive loss of substance and seriousness throughout K-12.
The extraordinary thing is that the schools have been kept stagnant. Nothing improves. All the articles and podcasts I've written in the last 35 years would be just as fresh today. So don't hesitate to scan the titles and then dip in anywhere that sounds interesting.

I especially hope you pass the podcast to parents with young children. They need to understand what's being done in the schools. If anyone wants to publish or quote anything I've written, be my guest.

———————————————————————--------------------------------

Meanwhile, Trump has promised to abolish the Department of Education, which sounds like a fine idea to me. This will open things up so that mainstream people in each state can start taking back the schools from extremists.

————————————————————————-----------------------------
Meanwhile, I've been adding to my literary site, Lit4u.com, which now features eight novels in several popular genre and a unique long poem titled Theoryland. More titles in 2025. (www.Lit4u.com)

What is the favorite gimmick used by Marxists? They promote dumb policies that make society worse. For example, they allow looting and arson in urban centers. For a parallel example, they allow whole word and sight-words in the public schools.

Having created lots of pain and destruction, they claim to be the group that can fix everything. That is the gimmick. Blatantly false but not blatant enough because so many Americans accept this nonsense.

Time to celebrate. Reading, real reading, can have a come back. This is big. Please share this announcement with 50 of your favorite people.

Reading Wars have raged for almost 100 years. This was never an imaginary thing, a mere figure of speech. It was real Americans, sensible Americans, trying to protect their schools and their children from an infestation. What progressives called education was really a kind of indoctrination, a kind of poison, a kind of engineered stupor. I.e. the deliberate dumbing down of America

I kept this thing short so everyone could read it two times. You have to understand what reading should be and then you'll appreciate how badly damaged we are. The left has been engaged in a dumbing down of America, and their main weapon, their nuclear weapon, was replacing traditional reading instruction with nonsense designed not to work.

RE: Support Education Reform

I’m raising funds to rebuild my main site Improve-Education.org (founded2005), which was "lost" by the hosting company.

Perhaps just as important, I want to be able to publicize important developments, like this news about phonics and the Science of Reading. Everybody in America should know this squalid story where determined ideologues sabotaged the effective teaching of literacy. (That's my conclusion.) There are many millions damaged by this activity and many many millions more who still don’t know what happened to reading in American public schools.

For either good cause, please consider donating to Support Education Reform.

Additionally, this site presents a brief rundown of the half-dozen different facets of my reform efforts: Podcast "Let's Fix Education".... 50 YouTube videos.... 150 articles on American Thinker....1000 answers on Quora....ETC.

Let's Fix Education / by Bruce Deitrick Price - Episode 90: An Act of War: what the professors of education did to our schools (March 22, 2023)
play

03/21/23 • 8 min

40 years ago, a congressional commission concluded that our public schools are so bad they might as well be an act of war by an unfriendly foreign power.

The congressional report was titled A Nation at Risk. This is a big deal. It's not some scholar’s opinion. It's not a reconstruction of something far away. It's what the best people in 1983 thought had happened to us. Namely, the wrong people controlled our schools.

The perps were the far-left and the professors of education. They are very skilled at sliding around in the shadows, trying not to leave any traces as they trample to death the very thought of superior public education.
------------------------------------------------------------

An unfriendly foreign power. And who might that be?? History tells us that the USSR was on the attack internationally as soon as the Russian Revolution was consolidated in 1920. See article: Lenin’s Train Goes Chugging Through American Education.

--------------------------------------------------------------

NB: transmogrification is a wonderfully fancy word that perfectly describes a long complex process by which you transform something mediocre into something excellent or, as in our national tragedy, the opposite.

The Education Establishment has cunningly devolved our school system. Little is taught, little is learned. K-12 is a boring hell for most children.

After Covid was over, the total number of students had dropped by more than 1 million. These children voted with their feet.

Let's stop pretending that the school system is acceptable. It's time to support education reform. That means we figure out what went wrong, and one by one we fix the problems.

Most importantly, we stop the social engineering so beloved by the hard left. We return to a knowledge curriculum that lifts every student to his or her potential.
CONCLUSION: Here’s a statement of my perspectives and proposals.

Episode 76: Dyslexia is a Fancy Word for Sabotage (Wednesday, December 14, 2022

Here's the bottom line: phonics is essential, because it’s a mnemonic device for dealing with a huge language like English.

If you don't have the phonics sounds to remind you how to pronounce the words, you will struggle and stall.

College students need more than 100,000 words. A computer might master that many sight-words but if we are talking about your kid, you can forget it.

America had universal literacy until 1931 when the Education Establishment insisted that we drop phonics and use sight-words. Now we have universal barely-literate.

If you agree that we should dumb down the American population, you will surely love sight-words.

Remember that the basic premise was that you first teach children to read and then they can teach themselves. That's the next step which our schools have cleverly, cunningly, criminally made impossible.

Professors like to say you can only describe, you can’t prescribe. Of course they are talking about you.
They can prescribe all day long. They can tell you to do this, and not to do that, and every variation in between.
Besides, there really is near-unanimity between your local newspapers, your favorite TV shows, and your favorite magazines. That's Standard English. So you get some kids raised in the backwoods, and they're hard to understand. Do you want to sabotage the rest of the class in order to accommodate these few kids?

INTRO

Our schools are doing a lousy job, but the public is so befuddled, there is hardly a squawk.

Every American should ask this question: why are we putting up with second-rate schools while paying top dollar?

ARTICLES THAT GO WITH THIS PODCAST:

Recent NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) figures continue to indicate that only ONE-THIRD of American teenagers are "proficient" in reading. (https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/

Meanwhile new numbers have appeared from PISA (Program for International Students Assessment). Psychology Today states our plight with unusual candor: "US scores show that our education system is flatlining.” (!!!)

-------------------------

NAEP and PISA scores are confusing. Here is a 5-minute article that clarifies what's going on. See “K-12: Are low scores a problem?” (on American Thinker) https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2019/12/k12_are_low_test_scores_a_problem.html
