In this week's episode Hannah and Ali talk all things intuitive eating... again! There were so many incredible questions on the topic of intuitive eating that Hannah and Ali had to record two episodes. This week they invited their friend, Certified Intuitive Eating Counselor, and Registered Dietitian Claire Chewning to help them out! Is intuitive eating just another fad diet? Isn’t it important to only eat certain foods in moderation? Isn’t it unhealthy to have limitless amounts of certain foods, especially ones with preservatives or super-processing? If I were to start intuitive eating tomorrow what should my first steps be? Understanding and practicing all the intuitive eating principles is necessary to find food freedom, experience joy and pleasure with eating, and to ultimately break up with the limiting beliefs of diet culture. It can feel scary to free yourself from these rigid rules, but we promise it’s worth it. Join Hannah, Ali and Claire as they help you take that first step! Make sure to head over to the @eatcakepod Instagram account Monday-Friday at 3pm PST for a live support "Snack Time & Chill"- a chance for a supported snack at a physical distance, to ask your nutrition questions and have some laughs along the way.

In this week’s episode, Hannah and Ali talk all things Intuitive Eating Principle #9: Movement- Feel the Difference. Exercise can many times go hand in hand with diet culture so when learning how to reconnect to food and start to trust your body, it can get confusing deciding if, when or how to start to exercise. On this week’s episode Hannah and Ali are joined by certified personal trainer Julie Newbry. Julie is passionate about helping her clients use exercise as a form of self-care rather than punishment while focusing on health promoting behaviors rather than weight or aesthetics so she was the perfect person to answer all your listener questions on incorporating movement while recovering from diet culture. As I am exercising more I have been noticing more binge urges and behaviors- do I have to give up exercise that I actually enjoy and which has been helping my mental health infinitely, or do I carry on while consciously ignoring the disordered voices in my head until they go away? Is it wrong to like the changes to my body and attention I am getting as I feel more toned and fit? Is it counterproductive to Intuitive Eating to feel like I need to force myself to exercise? Is it okay to not listen to your intuition when it comes to exercise, especially if it means you’ll give up exercise forever? Is it okay for exercise to be taking up a lot of my time and energy if it’s helping me get stronger and healthier (vs thinner and more focused on the number of the scale)? Is it okay for exercise to be a huge part of my life and identity? When it comes to exercise, diet culture gives a lot rules and “shoulds” which can make choices feel anything but intuitive. In this week’s episode Hannah, Ali and Julie will help you connect to the ‘why’ behind movement and help you feel the difference when movement is not guided by rigid rules or diet culture B.S.. Oh and spoiler alert- you don’t have a moral obligation to move your body but if you want to, this episode will help you do it in a kind, compassionate and FUN way.

Make sure to head over to the @eatcakepod Instagram account Thursdays at 3pm PST for a live support "Snack Time & Chill"- a chance for a supported snack at a physical distance, to ask your nutrition questions and have some laughs along the way.

Let Us Eat Cake - episode 27: the second one about coronavirus
play

06/11/20 • 45 min

In another special episode, Hannah and Ali continue to talk all things coronavirus. The many months of physical distancing have continued to impact the way people feel about food and their bodies, and the pressures of diet culture remain relentless. Are people with anorexia and eating disorders at higher risk for infection? Is it true that “obesity” is one of the greatest risk factors for COVID-19 hospitalizations and critical illness? As restrictions begin to be lifted in some areas how do I cope with a body that may have changed during the pandemic? And if restrictions haven’t been lifted in my area, how do I deal with the anxiety of exercising less and eating differently? What are some practical ways I can distract or occupy my time without being stuck in the extremes that come with diet culture? Hannah and Ali head to the literature to give you the most up-to-date facts, and give you practical tips to social distance from all the diet culture B.S. In the words of British Columbia Provincial Health Officer and shining star Dr Bonnie Henry, "be calm, be kind and be safe". This one's for you, Bonnie! Make sure to head over to the @eatcakepod Instagram account Monday-Friday at 3pm PST for a live support "Snack Time & Chill"- a chance for a supported snack at a physical distance, to ask your nutrition questions and have some laughs along the way.

Let Us Eat Cake - episode 25: the one about eating disorders
play

02/06/20 • 71 min

In this week’s episode Hannah & Ali talk all things eating disorders. As always this episode focuses on listener questions and shining an informed light on this complex topic. What’s the difference between an eating disorder and disordered eating? What causes eating disorders? How do you support a loved one if you think they’re struggling with their eating? How do you explain your eating disorder to your family and friends? How do you face the scale or approach intuitive eating if you’ve had a history of an eating disorder?

February 1-7 is National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. If any of the information in this episode is relevant to you, know that there is no such thing as looking like you have an eating disorder. Eating disorders do not discriminate; they are severe and far reaching, and affect people of all ages, cultures, genders, socioeconomic status and of ALL weights and shapes. Early access to support is one of the most predictive factors in finding a healthy relationship with food and your body. Unfortunately the stigma associated with this illness often prevents people from accessing the supports they need. This has to stop. Eating disorders can’t afford to wait. Hannah & Ali are here in this special final episode of season 4 to let you know that you are worthy of support, you are deserving of care, and you are not alone.

If you or someone you know is struggling with your relationship with food, your body or exercise, the first step is asking someone you trust for help. Going to your GP or a trusted healthcare professional is a great place to start. Here are a few of the online resources mentioned in today’s episode:
