When the cooks entered the kitchen, they were greeted with a Mystery Box unlike anything they had been presented with before. Instead of being given set ingredients, each contestant was presented with a photo from their childhood. While clearly an emotional trip for everyone cooking, the photos hit a lot harder for the people of colour in the room. Namely, for Khanh and Reynold who broke down in tears while talking about their photos, which reminded them of their struggles growing up. *** MasterChef’s Reynold ‘truly sorry’ for past homophobic comments - QNews MasterChef Australia favourite Reynold Poernomo has “sincerely and deeply” apologised after homophobic comments from six years ago resurfaced. The contestant in the Network 10 cooking show said he was ashamed of the comments, posted online back in 2014, and they don’t reflect his views now. Reynold’s posts on an online bodybuilding forum, under the username ReyReyy, suggested gay people were “freaks” in response to news a Disney TV series featured gay characters. “I wish the world made a united decision where they will capture all gay people and put them on a remote island full of gays,” the then-20-year-old wrote. “That way straight ppl (people) will be happy and the freaks can go on and f*** themselves.” Reynold also commented on a separate thread titled: “Is homosexuality a mental illness?” “Yes, end of thread,” he replied. Reynold posted the homophobic rant just months before he first appeared on the Network 10 show’s seventh season in 2014. ******* YOUTUBER MYKA STAUFFER REVEALS ADOPTED SON WITH AUTISM HAS BEEN PLACED IN A NEW HOME: 'HE NEEDED MORE - Independent UK YouTuber Myka Stauffer and her husband James have announced their adopted son Huxley has been placed in a new home nearly three years after he was adopted from China. In a new YouTube video titled: “An update on our family” the couple, from Columbus, Ohio, explained that Huxley, who has autism, had a “lot more special needs that we weren't aware of”. ****

LEMON - The Asian Black Problem
play

06/08/20 • 40 min

LEMON delivers the latest juice of celebrity & pop culture news, candid conversations with celebrities and influencers, as well as social and cultural topics from an Asian Australian perspective. Hosted by Phillip Kuoch and Thomas Tan. SHOUT US COFFEE: https://bit.ly/2zJaPTf Our Facebook group: http://bit.ly/2TQOsBb Instagram: http://bit.ly/2TPE0df Twitter: http://bit.ly/2TEpfLa Our Spotify Playlist: https://spoti.fi/2IMmpxJ Hosted by: Phillip Kuoch: http://bit.ly/3aR8Itk Thomas Tan Tan: http://bit.ly/2TU4QCk ******** Black Lives Matter - We can’t start the show this week without discussing what’s happening in the US and around the world - The murder of George Flloyd by police has ignited the BLM movement with thousands of people taking it to the streets to protest against police brutality and the centuries of oppression against black people - For the most part, the protest has been largely peaceful but - In some cases, the protest had become violent and looters who were not apart of the protest, were breaking into shops and businesses to loot - People saying #alllivesmatter - is it problematic? Malaysia's Miss Universe says black people should 'relax' - Last week Malaysia’s Former Miss Universe Samantha Kayty posted an Instagram story about George Flloyd saying that ‘black people should relax’ - https://twitter.com/lilasianthiccie/status/1267347193582612480/photo/1 - To Black People, relax. Take it as a challenge, makes you stronger. You chose to be born as a ‘coloured’ person in America for a reason. To learn a certain lesson. Accept it as it is, till now hunger and poverty still exist. It is what it is.It’s evitable . Best you can do is remain calm , protect your heart and don’t allow it to crumble. That’s your responsibility. Of course this is to the ones who understand this level and state of mind. Not for everyone. Everyone grows at a different rate. The Asian Black Problem - We need to talk about how what’s happening right now isn’t a white vs black thing, we need to take a hard look at ourselves as well and realise that we have a black problem in Asia and Asian culture - A lot of us who are children of immigrants have a trouble communicating with our parents because of our broken mother tongue but there’s been a movement to start a conversation with Asian parents by sending them translated open letters why BLM is important to talk about - We’ve talked a lot about the racism Asians around the world were facing during this pandemic. If we thought that was bad, imagine what it’d be like to be a black person fearing for your life every time you leave your house because you’re scared of being pulled over by the police and getting shot - A McDonald’s in China bans black people during coronavirus - So many examples of blackfacing in mainstream media in China e.g. impersonating an African woman on national TV - KPOP - Yoon-mirae who is a respected rapper andis bi-racial has spoken about the racism discrimination she’s faced in Korea - Kiya interview with Asian Boss: backhanded compliments: “You’re pretty for a black person “ “You’re different to other black people because you’re skinny” - Beauty standards -> TONYA TKO - https://www.facebook.com/melanie.glico/posts/10156779441516534 - Cambodia: Chinese or fair skin people are seen as more important, if you’re darker, they call you ‘ah kmao’ which literally means black person in a degrading way - What do you think needs to happen for the world as a society to change?

With everything that's going on around the world and many Asians are experiencing heighten racism because of COVID-19, there's never been a more important time to practice some self love and reflect on ourselves. Many of us may not realise but we may have internalised a lot of racism ourselves - which has negative long term effects. LEMON - Kung Fu Vagina
play

02/08/21 • 26 min

Another month, another cultural appropriation! This week we are switching things up. You might notice the show sounds a bit different and that's because we'll only be focusing on one topic per week to give us more time to really dig deeper into the topics we cover. Also, we're both expecting really a busy year for us personally so we wanted to make it manageable for ourselves. BUT let's talk about the problematic sex and relationship coach Kim Anami's music video called 'Kung Fu Vagina'. Anami landed in hot waters last week after she culturally appropriated Asian culture to sell and promote her online courses. There's a few problematic things about the video - It samples Carl Douglas' catchy but problematic 70's song ' Kung Fu Fighting' which has the oriental riff - The music video fetishizes Asian women - Anami wears chopsticks in her hair - Mismatch Chinese & Japanese culture: although the intention to appropriate Chinese culture, she wears a Kimino... - It uses the WONTON FONT, which further perpetuates what Westerners think Chinese characters look like Since recording, we have learnt that she's been deleting comments about those pointing out the cultural appropriation and Twitter users have found that she's publicly liked anti-BLM tweets. Do we see a pattern here? This week, Phil recommends watching the Korean drama 'True Beauty' which is available on Viki. Join in on the discussion on our socials!
